Remote Start Engine installation at the dealership vs somewhere else

Hi guys, Im relatively new in this forum and recently joined the TL family about a month ago and bought a used 05 DBP with navi. Im mad loving it every day! (not to mention getting hooked at reading the threads here almost everyday!). Anyhow, the cold weather here in New England can be very harsh, and I envy car owners warming up their cars remotely before they drive off to work while I on the other hand freeze my a#@ for 5 to 10 minutes before the internal temp is warm enough and the wind shield's clear of frost. So Im planning to have a remote start engine installed. I talked to the Acura dealership where I got my car, was told that they can install it on the TL, adding that I would have to normally insert the car keys to RUN the car for security purposes, which is not an issue for me at all. Well, they quoted me $600 for a two hour work. Is this a standard price? Is there a standard brand of the installer that's best for the Acura 05 TL? I heard that you could get the same specs installed for less, but risk losing the warranty if I get it from a non-dealership installer. Any insights would be appreciated...

even in the coldest of weather here (sometimes -30F), I just get in my car, turn it on let it idle while I scrape it off, and then drive away. by the time I get to the end of the street, I already have a hot seat and heat coming out of the vents.

btw, most Acura dealers do not install remote start systems, they send it out somehwere to get it done.....

I would invest in a good remote start system rather than spend 600 dollars just to leave a key inside the car and have it stolen. Some of the alarm gurus know the best solution to your issue here...

Thanks for the tip guys. Sorry for the confusion, what I meant was that I could REMOTELY start up the car engine with heated air, heated seats and defrost and if somebody else gets into the car and tries to steal it without the actual car keys, the car just stalls, doesn't move a wheel, thus preventing it from being stolen. All of these for 600 bucks. I just feel that its a rip off.

First Acura in Massachusetts says they can do it, and since its within the dealership, the original warranty wont be voided. Didnt verify though if they really send the car to an outside shop.

$600 is obscene for just a remote start. For $400, you can get a full blown alarm with integrated remote-start, all your normal keyfob functions except for controlling the windows can be transferred to the new remotes. Now they have the units that do NOT require the spare key be inserted into the a module that is hidden somewhere under the dash. If you touch the brake (which is necessary to move the car out of park) without putting the key in the ignition, the car shuts off. I would stick with either VIPER or HORNET - good units for a decent price. I've had mine on my 06 TL for almost 2 years with no trouble - could NOT survive the NYC winter without remote-start - actually I could, but you know what I mean...

personally i think compustar and autostart is the best out there right now. it pretty common here in canada to have a remote starter. and there is no need for sparekeys under that dash anymore. there are bypass modules(idatalink) that copy the transponder's signal. they also tie into the OEM alarm.

i personally have an autostart, but compustar has better range. upto 6000 feet for some units.

I have a compustar. It was $750 I think. Works great. Range is okay but not as good as their spread spectrum model (which I have on my other car but they tend to be quirky in some vehicles). I park about two blocks from my office. I do have line of sight and it works fine. It is also an alarm and pops the trunk. It lets you know if the car started, how much longer it will run and the interior temp all on a remote the size of the stock key fob. I don't have any experience with any other brands so I can't help with compare/contrast. Let us know what you decide to do and how it all works out.
