Range of programmable remotes

Anyone know how to increase the range of the programmable remotes in the car?
Mine is barely strong enough to open my garage door when I'm right in front of it.

There was a thread about this while ago, I tried to search but found nothing. (This is all from an old and quickly failing memory so take it with a grain of salt)
Apparently, one of the things the homelink does when being programmed is measure signal strength so if you park a bit further away from the item your programming it will increase the gain to get a signal strong enough to replicate. If you park down at the end of the driveway and have someone help you program it may give you better range.

(Or you could just try a search and find out that I am full of crap - Your choice )
