question about non nav to nav conversion

Hi I'm planning to convert my non nav 05tl to nav. But I don't know if the 08 type s unit would fit and work in my 05tl. Since I've never seen an 05tl converted to 08tl type s nav unit. Oh and please tell me what is the best way to get all the parts together besides ebay. I think I've seen a numerous threads about this, but when I searched this time I can't find any. I think someone had posted how we could get parts from junkyards. But I can't find that either. Anyways, please help me out. Thanks.

it should work. although you would need a new xm receiver. the drive has all the same connectors there is one extra five pin green connector, i believe it goes to the new xm unit. i think its for the xm navi traffic feature, the newer 07-08 navi uses a thing called acura link which when registered lets you know when certain services or maint. is due, there are other things its connected to as well such as TPM system, pass side air bag. so to get it working at full functioning condition would require the ETM. a little complicated but not impossible.

when i did a navi conversion for a friend i swapped drives, my 07 in his 05. the display worked fine voice commands worked too, the zagat info is all in the drive so that worked. no nav traffic cuz he had old xm. and the 5 pin slot on the new drive dedicated to the new xm unit was left blank.

a guy named hondaacuratech sells the entire kit on ebay for a really good price. You can buy the parts from tim @hondaacuraworld.com, but it will be 3x the pricing of the ebay kit.

For the 08 conversion, use the 08 BASE TL stuff, its blue lighting so it will match the rest of you 05TL. You will need the base tl clock display, base tl xm reviever and antenna, 08 HFL unit and 08 base radio

If you are really serious about this (many people want to, but very few actually follow through), buy this auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=190247589765
It includes everything! Including the elusive xm receiver (which retails for more than $1000). I am not affiliated with the seller, but I have bought from them and they have a stellar ebay rating. It will end up less than $1200, because I have been following this auction for a couple months now because I needed only the xm receiver, but the seller wouldn't break up the package. He tried to sell it at a buy it now price of $1200 and it didn't sell. I think everyone on the boards will agree that ~$1000 for an 08 complete navi parts is a bargain.

jptl04 did my conversion and now I'm trying to upgrade my navi to 07/08. I don't think it will be that hard, but no one's done it, so I'm kinda on my own. Waiting for one more part then I can get started. Good luck.

Thank you guys for all the information!!!! And actually zeppelin77 the auction you mentioned, was the reason I asked if 08 type s unit would fit to my 05tl. I hope I could win it(thanks for the information). Since I need it fast. Because, I'm not in U.S right now. I'm at Korea. My ELS audio system broke, but the dealer over here says they can not fix it, since they do not have any system to work with. I also have an Eclipse AVN system in my car, but that broke too. So this time I'm trying to convert everything, since I think it would be better than fixing the systems I have(and also technicians over here says they can't fix it). Oh and jptl04 could you give me some information how to install the system. I tried to find your thread you posted, but I just can't find it.
Again, Thank everyone !!!!

That is a sweet deal with all the major components included. I bought my navi screen with the radio from this company and they were great to deal with.

This is a type-s unit so everything is going to be red like csmeance mentioned but the gui is more refined over the previous versions along with some other things like xm traffic, aux input, etc.

There also doesn't appear to be any wiring or connectors, so be prepared to spend over $500 for a complete harness or something in between for the connectors and wire.

If you go with the harness, I've heard great things about hondacuratech who sells them.

Does anyone have a complete list of what is needed to put the factory nav in an 06 and what years are the best to use. I would like to do as little as possible with tear down and install.

Oh yeah, I see them on the HU but not on the dvd unit. I'd say ask but there's only 15min left on that auction/

If anyone plans on doing your own harness, go with the pigtails. Crimping those bare connectors is a real pain. The one's going into the dvd unit are not as good as the green ones.

I'd say search but I don't think it'll work.

You'd have to look up the part numbers, but from memory here is what I needed:

DVD Unit (in trunk)
Antenna (under rear deck)
Navi Display (above HU)
Navi Sub Display (above center vent)
Steering Wheel Switch
Harness
Trunk liner to accommodate the navi unit
Service Manual (to disassemble/reassemble)
Electrical Troubleshooting Manual (An absolute must to figure out the wiring)
Misc nuts bolts, etc.

The 04-06 are the same, 07/08 have an updated gui along with the other features. If I could have, I would have looked for all 07/08 base parts but I got stuff so cheap that I can't complain.

Hopefully someone will chime in if I missed anything.

It's a fun project but I also had the luxury of having another car to drive while I worked on this. If it's your only ride it might be less fun.

I asked this seller a month ago about the rest of the pigtails. He said pigtails were included for all components.

ok guys i'm in the same boat as OP. my sister wants to turn her 06 non-navi to navi. she doesn't need XM or bluetooth.

so if i buy this auction,

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2008-...mZ200251008251

will this do?

i will also have to buy the books to do this project from reading other threads.

thats a pretty good deal! for 08 parts. you'll still have bluetooth , but not xm traffic/ you'll need a new xm receiver for that. it's just missing the HFL button and like 2 connectors ( maybe seller has them just not pictured) on the screen. and of course a custom harness.

Don't forget about what csmeance said. The lights on the deck and the buttons near the screen will be red and not blue. And yes, you'll need the sub display above the vents if it is not included (I didn't see it). This comes in red or blue as well.

I think they are little rubber bulb condoms. I just bought about 15 screws from the dealer yesterday and it was $50. Little things can add up. You might have to buy all new bulbs. Or maybe someone on here looking to switch to red would trade with you.

yes some are colored rubber covers, but the ones on the radio and the around the knobs are super tiny surface mounted leds bulbs that are soldered to the circuit board. gonna be pretty hard to replace those, if not impossible.
