ok guys, i've been wanting to do this for a while now, but i got held up doing my audio system uprade. i got all the parts needed for this piece by piece of ebay and acura of del ray. basicly what i did was seperate all the navi wires from the original harnesses. since thats the only thing i was adding. seems like a waste of time to strip down you car and replace all the wire harnesses, since your car already has them, except for the navi ones. so here's what i did



this is the original dashboard wire harness


this is it seperated only for use with navi-rom and display sreen


this is the floor wire harness seperated


this is what was left over! all these you don't need!


this is the roof harness


this is the roof harness seperated, it's a good thing i got the floor harness and the dash harness free from the ebay seller i bought the display screen from. they're expensive new, the roof harness i bought new for $65


i used a tiny flat head screwdriver to extract the pins from the plugs an labled them. this is were the etm manual comes in handy!


this is a shot of the hfl mic connector and the pins from the new roof harness


just plug them in the correct hole and your set! etm manual a must! then run the cable up through the headboard down the front windshiled pillar and connect to the floor harness


this is the f-can high and the f-can low and vehicle speed sensor signal fom the dash harness the connector it goes in is located behind the center air vents


just plug it in theres only one spot for it and only one way it connects, easy!


connectors for the audio unit so navi can controll it, just locate the empty slots and plug in


theres also a couple of other wire to connect, the power, the navi hfl switch on the steering wheel, and the back-up sensor wire, ... here im just testing it before i put it back together.


works fine!!! and no complete gutting of my precious!! just run the floor harness down the passenger side behind the seat and into the trunk were the dvd-rom unit is


here it is put back together! everything works fine voice commands, clock, radio, all work fine. took me about half a day. pretty fun, considering i never ever attempted anything like this before


these were the only two friends that helped me with this. the etm with the wiring and the service manual for dissasembly. don't try this without them imo. anyone can do it if you have a good game plan and do your homework!! i did !!

I didn't see any steering wheel controls there for the navi though. I assume you just didn't take pictures of it since voice is working.

I'm glad you got everything working.. and in only half a day. You really did do your research.

I had navi since day one but it doesnt take much to realize it would be a hell of a job to put it in a non-navi car.

nice job! your idea to not completlyy replace harnesses looks like it shaved most of the work off did you hit any snags or did it all go as smooth as the thread suggest i already have navi but was curios anyway

BTW, My install was identical to yours. This is definitely the way to go. We did not gut the entire car.

thanks man, everything went pretty smooth. it was a pain to seperate all the wires, but it saves alot of time! it seperated all the wires ahead of time. when you seperate them, each wire leads you to the connector it goes to, which is already in your car so you cut off all the other wires except for the navi ones. then use the etm and the service manual, to figure out which connector it is and its location in the car. floor harness was easy, all the dvd-rom connectors lead to two plug connectors

Nice job and I commend your efforts, but what did it actually cost you in parts and hours? Are you certain you have ALL the functionality of a native Navi model, like the voice, dash temp sensor, etc?

thanks for the compliment bro, all the steering wheel controls are there i just forgot to post pic. just four screws two on the air bag, and the other two on the switch itself. just remove the old switch replace with the new one, then connect the one grey wire to the sub harness located on top of the collum behind the wheel under the plastic collum cover.

thanks, all together the parts cost me $1700, one whole afternoon seperating the wires, then i studied the manuals for about a week, not all day of course, and another half day installing. yes everything works just like a native navi model. why wouldn't it, every single wire that has to do with the navi was connected and found a home..........

btw.... all the parts are from a 2005 model my car is a 2004 they're the same!

nice effort!!! i am sure you had your reasons when you decided not to get a navi.

note to car buyers: remember to buy a navi model from the start if you "might, just might" need it. just look at these pics... hooooooooooly cow!!!

here's a shot of my trunk and the dvd-rom and cover. all i can say is that i really didn't need the navigation but i wanted it after i had already done a bunch of mods. so this was the route i took. plus i thought this would be a good project to take on .

this navigation system is awesome!!

one of the cleanest non-navi to navi installs i have seen. i haven't seen anyone do the wire harness trick bc of cost, but if you can get a good deal it actually looks easier to do than just buying the plugs and re-running all the wiring.

good stuff, you're a brave soul. i've done my share of crimping, i'm sure your fingers hurt, lol. cheers.

thanks, at first i was going to pay someone to do it, the more i studied the etm manual the more i told myself "you could do this" yea it was kind of scary. but i just had confidence in my abilities. my prep work and planning paid of in the end. i don't know how many other members did the install themselves i think only 2 or 3 including myself

One of the main reasons I got the car was the navi. Looks so sick with the blue mood lighting and blue accents. I don't know what I'd do without it. I didn't think I'd use it that much but I use it ALL THE TIME. No more directions. Just give me an address!!

the trunk is awesome. i like the type s shift knob, i liked it better than the new 1.

this is just an update ive had the navi installed now for over 2 weeks and i love it, it feels like i have a new car , i have a friend w/ a nav tl and he says there's no difference between the two everything works like its supposed to

p.s. Ron A, Mega Mod. mabey you could "sticky" this post in the tl garage for any future zine members who would want to do this mod.

the navi is 2000 dollars, and u get upgraded tires along with the unit. Freaking amazing that u did it urself, and it doesnt seem like cost is a big deal for u neway, but for those looking to save money.... buy factory navi!

i think the navi addition price depends on the dealer..I got quoted $1800 more for the Navi on most of the dealers.

yea i know, if i could rewind time, then i would have got it w/ navi, but since i didn't and had already modded the hell out of it, this was my only choice if i wanted the navi. besides i don't consider it a waste of time i learned alot about how my car was put together, (in case i need to do any future modding,) it's not brain surgery it's only screws and bolts.
