Right. If the source is 2 channel, CD quality or less then there are still some differences. The Cirlinca app will let you add pictures and others things compliant with the DVD-A spec. Not really of use in the car but perhaps for a home player. If you are comfortable with my scripts then, for stereo stuff, they are probably OK for you.

What the Cirlinca app does is integrate everything in a purpose-specific package targeted at DVD-A . It looks very promising and should be a steal at the $35 price. I haven't tried to rip CDs but it looks like it will allow you to use a CDDB to tag all the songs. Again, not big in the car but cool for home players that probably will display the info. My real joy came from how well it handled multichannel tracks. I tested it with some songs from move credits. The ones that are all re-mixed to sound great as the credits roll on a movie. (There is a huge orchestral at the end of Pirates of the Caribbean that has lots of surround ambience, kettle drums and LFE content . It blew me away in the car.)

In summary, my scripts really shouldn't be compared to Cirlinca. All I do is help create rudimentary WAV--> DVDA. They have honed and refined it. By sticking with DVD-A as a target they have avoided the feature and price "bloat" of their many lame competitors.

Cool, so now my $64,000 question? Would this allow you to "RIP" the 5.1 audio from DVD concerts? Ex. Could you "peel of the 5.1 audio form the new Eagles DVD and make a DVD-A disc from it? I have a few concerts that I wouldn't mind being able to do that to. If this accompilses that task, your right it's a steal (at twice the price)

We are veering a bit off topic of "free DVDA creation" but I'll indulge a bit more...

The answer is yes and no
No. The Cirlinca app will not rip DVD-V audio. If I understand correctly the content you want is the 5.1 audio from a convert DVD-V. This is typically DD5.1 You will need to decrypt the DVD-V and then extract the audio from it (.ac3 file). Then you will need to convert the .ac3 file to a 6 channel wav file. Then Yes you can drop that into the Cirlinca app and it will burn you a multichannel DVD that will play in the car. Simply the fact that it does this makes it worth the price. I also did a CD-->DVDA with it today and it works great. The user interface could be better but once you figure it out your "golden". (aside: I wish software producers would drop the "skinned" effects and just use a GIU that conforms to Windows standards)

Key Observations
  • Extracting to .ac3 is easy. But doing it into one file per chapter/song of the original content is difficult. You can always do it as one big file but the Cirlinca app does not allow you to put in track or chapter demarcations. One big file is easy but it isn't what you want if you can't program chapters/tracks into it.
  • DD5.1 and DTS are typically not 96k/24bit. Usually 48k/16bit. They sound awesome but not quite up to 96k/24bit quality.

Key words for the adventurous: BeLight, BeSweet, DVD2AVI, www.doom9.org

For further discussion of the Cirlinca tool I suggest we use this thread

Paid $30k, saved about 6K I guess for 9K miles, thought it was worth it.
still have tons of warranty and got all the options..
I suggest you drop by this site and ask them to send you the demo disk that the TL comes with. If I remember correctly one other board member acquired one directly from them.

They have good reason to give it to you. If it helps sell DVD-As and ELS systems it's good for them.

Right after it came out, I ripped the audio off the Led Zeppelin DVD (the 2003 release). I could choose between the Dolby Digital 5.1 stream, the dts 5.1(SDDS) stream, or the uncompressed L-PCM stereo stream. The uncompressed stereo stream was far better than the other two surround mixes. As it was 48k/16bit, I converted it to 44.1k/16bit with Cool Edit Pro and put it onto discs. I am not sure if I'd do it with the dts 5.1 mix now, even knowing I have surround in the car (which I still think is overrated and pointless). At this point, I am sticking with 2 track mixes.

Yes. It is true that the stereo tracks of many concert DVDs sound better than the 5.1 tracks. On many the 5.1 track is an afterthought. I think the newer disks will take more advantage of true multichannel recordings since home theatre has taken off into so many homes.

Dude, you just haven't heard the right multichannel stuff yet. I assure you, it is neither overrated nor pointless. It is, however, hard to find great examples since most "pop" is mixed pretty poorly into the format. Try Blue Man Group "The Complex" or Clapton and BB King "Riding with the King". Or do a 6 channel rip the closing credit soundtracks of "Pirates of the Caribbean", or "Finding Nemo" to hear some real range and good mixes. Maybe not your taste but it will demonstrate the point.

Omfg!!! Wow

Well, I did it last night.

I yanked the soundtrack off of " Darkside of the Moon" and "Phantom of the opera" dvd's.

THE SOUND IS UNBELIEVABLE. 5.1 in your acura cannot be matched, no holds barred.

Adobeman, you script is awesome for playing mp3, 2 channel music. This raises the bar quite a bit. I am still in awe after a 50 minute commute this am.

Guess I'm going to pony up the $35 bucks.

Adobeman,
Thankyou for excellent info. I read through all the pages.
Appreciate everyones efforts and special thanks to Adobeman.
I have TL 2005, been enjoying DVD-A -R on all 6 discs
Now I bought HP DVD DL writer and +R DL media.
I tired in the past, different +R but no luck playing in the car...
I read some people are able to play,
My question which media/manufacturer of +R DL and how ?

I use always 6 Wave Files from surround sound
and discWelder to create DVD Audio. Excellent results.

Can I use all 6 wave files for each track to create surround sound DVD-A using Version2 http://home.comcast.net/~adobeman/DVDA/DVDA.zip
on +R DL and will it be same surround or this software changes ??

Did anyone found new firmware for TL to play DVD-A on +R, +R DL and MP3 ?
I contacted TL guys, ELS guys, manufacturer of car player, nothing yet...
FYI, RL can play MP3 even on DVD media.

Sorry too many question ... I wait to hear from you...

I don't know much about +R or +R DL, I burn -R only.

My process will not do multichannel. Only Stereo. Cirlinca "DVD-Audio Solo" is seems to be a good program for burning 6 mono wavs to make one surround track. It also will burn 6 channel wavs and that's even easier.

I'm not sure that firmware alone will increase compatibility with +R. Perhaps mp3. Since some +R play in the car it may be media (dye type, etc) that is the factor rather than it just being +R. That varies from brand to brand. I wouldn't hold my breath for a FW update.

I just burned my third DVD-A today. Thanks so much for all the effort you put into developing this technique. I was worried that the third one was my first "coaster". The first two played fine in my SONY home DVD player. This third one would not be recognized by my SONY but plays fine in the TL. All the blanks are DVD-R from the same batch. Any thoughts about what might have gone wrong?

Another interesting gitch was that I could not burn an ISO image of about 4,650,000,000 bytes onto any blank DVD-Rs I had (tried about 3 before giving up). So I had to delete the ISO image, cut out a few songs and recreate a slightly smaller ISO (about 4,500,000,000 bytes) before it would burn. Any thoughts on this?

Anyway, these are just minor issues but being the tech geek I am, I sort of am curious....

So you're saying with Adobeman's program, I can create a .iso file that is up to 8GB and burn it to a dl dvd?

I am using deepburner to burn and adobeman's program to create the iso. will this work?

I do have a DL burner and DL discs... but I didn't think Adobeman's program would allow a .iso file to be over 4.3GB and work correctly.. and what about the burning program to burn DL??

Thanks.

Well I figured out how to create the DVD-A's before I even thought to look here for info. Took a while to figure it out. Somehow I created them in a completely different way than is instucted on here. Oh well, I got 'em working so who cares.

Well give yourself a pat on the back and tell us how you did it. Feedback... easier, more difficult, what? I'm assuming you still remember how your way worked.

Actually I really don't know. I ended up downloading like 10 programs in an attempt to make these DVD-A's. The applications I ended up with look like I made them myself. Somehow this pocess works. I really don't know how. I transfer the files and convert them using one program, and the other program writes them to DVD. If I do actually figure this out I'll let you know, cause in the end I paid nada.

Yes, people have (there are posts in this thread about it). Your dvd burner needs to have the ability to burn DL discs. Nero will burn a DL. And it is my understanding that they play in the TL (don't know if is a -r or +R DL). You are still limited to 99 tracks per group. But you can have a total of 9 groups.

Adobeman's script does handle the double layer disks. The only problem I experienced was not knowing if the image would be too big until you try to burn it.

Thanks!

BTW adobe.......pure genius. I wouldn't expect anything less from a fellow ABP owner!

Arr, First post going here. I got a 2005 Blue/Grey TL. I was hesitant because of the lack of mp3 support, but after reading this thread I went ahead with it.

I just burned my first DVD-A disc, it took me a total of 30 minutes for a 2 GB disc. Worked the first time flawlessly!

Thanks to everyone who helped with this - you have made my TL a truly perfect car!

Angry I need some help/clarification

WTF is up with Double Layer dvd's?

Best buy and Compusa only carry DVD DL +R. DL-R look very rare. Does anyone know why?

Since +R media rarely play in our cars. I'm hesitant to buy these expensive little things just to make a few 30$ coasters.

Any ideas where one can buy (in person) DL-R dvd's?

Adobeman,

Does DVD solo support DL?

Dual layer is basically a dvd with twice the capacity of a normal dvd. and dual layers should work if you have a dual layer burner. I believe the tl does suppor the dual layer.

I purchased Fujifilm DL DVD+Rs at Best Buy. It worked for me using Adobeman's script to create the ISO and IMGBurn to burn the ISO to disc.

I use Memorex DVD+R DLs for the double capacity but for normal DVD I use the DVD-R and DVD-RW.

DVD-DL are near imposible to find so I am glad I didn't need them.

Thumbs up DTS and Acura TL

By the way, Did you know our TL's can play DTS encoded audio? I found and downloaded about 10 albums.
The wave files are already in DTS, so all you have to do is burn them like a reualr cd and wala, pop in in your TL.

The will not play in regular cd players or most computers though. You need a DTS sound card. If you try and play them, you'll get white noise.

The sound is better than the 5.1 dvd's I've made so far. Its like my own little driving theater.
Hotel California is AWESOME and so is Pink Floyd, wish you were here. I have Darkside of the moon in DTS also, but havent listened to it yet

Script works, but some songs terminate early

First, many thanks Adobeman!
I downloaded the zip file with the scripts and software.
After some initial trouble I did have a working DVD-A on my first try burning a disc.
When it plays, it sounds great!

I do have a problem however. Many songs, although not all of them, end early. Songs play anywhere from the full length to only a few seconds. The player then moves on to the next track and plays the beginning of the next track. The song always starts OK, but will end prematurely. Any clues what is going on?

I have listened to the source .wav files, and they are all OK. They play fine on my PC. I put about 80 tracks all in the first folder with unique file names. I had some problems getting the script to work with tracks in individual subdirectories. Since I wanted all the files in the first group anyway, I just put them into the first directory.

When it plays, it sounds great! I've always thought the TL played DVD-A with better quality than CD, even at the same sample rate and quantization (44.1 kHz/16 bit). The DVD-A shouldn't sound any better (or worse) than the source CD, but I believe it does. So, not only does putting CDs onto a DVD give much more storage and playing time, I think it also sounds better. It appears that performance was optimized for DVD-A without as much attention to CD audio.

Any help would be appreciated. I haven't tried re-creating another ISO and burning yet, but I could try that.

FYI, I used Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 to rip the CDs to .wav, and to burn the ISO file to a DVD-R.

The DVD did play in my car, but would not play on my PC, or on a Panasonic DVD player that sort of claims DVD-A support, although it does not provide full support and analog 5.1 output. That DVD player only played the DVD-A tracks on a few of my commercial DVD-As though, most it just plays the DVD-V section.

Song ending prematurely

Hello,
I've burned about 8 DVD-A with the Adobeman scripts now - and all of them but 1 came out perfectly. On the problem disk the first 40 songs or so play perfectly, but the songs after that end prematurely. I've not played the whole disk to the end - but it seemed that most of the songs played to within 10 or 20 seconds of the end and then got clipped off - and the player moved right on to the next song.

This is probably totally unrelated - but the source CD said HDCD (ie. High Definition CD) on the label. I had to go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCD to find out what that meant.

I used an identical process to create the 7 good and 1 bad disc. Adobeman Scripts, Nero Burning Rom 6 Ultra Edition, Fuji DVD-R media. I've burned several discs since the problem disc and they came out fine too. What I've not done yet is try to burn the problem disc (a compilation of Beatles/Stones tunes) to see if my failure is repeatable. Actually, I was thinking about on my next attempt putting all beatles on 1 DVD-A and all Stones on another just for convenience/organization - so I probably won't repeat the failure test case exacty.

DVD Vs. CD Quality

BTW,
I could swear that the quality of DVD-A was better than CD as well - but I don't see how this is possible. The DVD-As that I created were from CDs that I owned - so both DVD and CD should have contained bit for bit identical tracks. It doesn't make sense to me that the DVD would sound better. Glad to know that I am not the only one that heard this - the difference is very - but it kind of bugs me I hear something that cannot really, logically, make sense!

You know, I am just thinking out loud... but my Yamaha Receiver at home has a "7 Channel Stereo" setting - that sounds very good compared to the normal/standard stereo (I do have a 7.1 speaker setup). I wonder if the Acura's Receiver is in a different "mode" when it is playing back DVDs then when it is playing back CDs? Perhaps it is not a difference in the source material (DVD vs. CD) - but a difference in the Acura's Pioneer Receiver Component and/or Speaker settings/usage (that is triggered by DVD playback) that we are hearing...

If you get a chance pick up Dire Straits Brothers in Arms (dvd-a). Its a 2 sided CD/DVD-A (side A is CD, side B is DVD-A). You can compare song to song on the same system. The DVD-A using all the channels gets a

There is a difference even I can hear.
