Question Power system questions (batt/cap)

ok so my main issue is that i can not have my car on doin anything it seems without killing my battery after what i percieve as a short amount of time. now i have a a RF punch 12 sub powered with a amp(taped stock sub wires into loc) not a powerfull amp 275rms acording to the power sheet so i DONT have a CAPACITOR as i felt i shouldnt need it and since i dont have any flickering lights (well dome light just barely when car is only "on") but i also have tvandnav2go,usa spec, a plug in the armrest cigarett lighter, leds in all the interrior lighting, a remote to the amp, a swithch for the video for tvandnav2go (its illuminated blue)

oh i also have polk components but they are running off factory amp and have same load to system as factory paper crap speakers

should i invest in a better battery? i have a duralast as when my battery gave out on me i got whatever advance auto had that fit my car.

Should i get a capacitor to relieve some of the strain? can i get a way with 1/4-1/2 farrad considering how low power my sub is (have a seat inside if you dont think i beat)

i am sure i dont have any shorts well maybe in my switch for the nav as somtimes it dosent want to light but that is tied in at fuse 32 along with remote turn on for the amp. the tvandnav2go turn on is taped into amp at the turn on wire.

Get an Optima Yellow Top (or something similar) and/or add one in the trunk.

How long are you planning to play music? I can go for 20-30 minutes and it still starts up like normal.

Hmm, by "on" do you mean running? Or are you sitting with it in the "Acc" position? If you are running the car and the battery is dying, something is wrong with your electrical. If you are just sitting watching TV or something, well go find somewhere to watch it :-) But I'd check your remote turn-ons and go from there.... Otherwise you'd probably have to get a second battery if you are spending hours without the engine running.

Check your current battery. Even a regular old battery should play a system like that for 15-30 minutes without any issue.

You don't need a cap.

No to the cap. Why are people spending 30 minutes in their cars watching video on a low-res screen with crappy components? Hehe. Just go inside, turn on the blue-ray, hit the Martin Logan's and the Lexicon pre-amp/amp and relax.

Anyhow, you may want to do some research on the function and purpose of a capacitor in relation to car audio.

i know what a cap is how it works in relation to anything

i spend lots of time in the car while working on/experimenting/installing not sitting there to entertain myself, and its annoying to have to turn the car on or risk not being able to start or worse, installsomething then go to check it and the car is dead leaving me to question what i just did.

my components are far from crappy far from high-end but far from crappy

I don't believe that one bit

3000w / 12v= 250amps + whatever else you have on

Gotcha, didn't mean to offend at all. I thought you were just relaxing in your car. How about while working on it you connect a different battery so you can save your main battery and then just recharge the extra battery at your leisure. Again I apologize if I offended you at all.

Get a yellow top battery and invest in a battery tender that you can plug in while your work on your car.

it is possible ive had it in my 97 accord almost the same set up and we use to leave the car with the volume up and by the time you realized 30-45 mins would pass by.....

There are so many better batteries for the money than the Optima Yellowtop....

I have a Red top because I got it very cheap. I get maybe 10 minutes worth of run time if I'm lucky at moderate volume and even then it turns over slower than normal. You're just not going to get much run time off of a single battery with a couple amps that run at 50% efficiency, not to mention the current draw from the rest of the car. I think the last time I ran mine without the engine running way during MS8 calibration just to see if it made a difference.

It would probably be cheaper and more effective to get two average batteries than a single expensive battery.

Same here. That kind of power draw for that amount of time is pretty much impossible especially considering even if it were a class D amp it's still drawing 3,600 watts minimum.

250amps is about what it takes to turn over a hot engine. Imagine holding the starter on for 30 minutes straight....

More than likely the amp is not drawing 1/4 of what he thinks it is or the run time is greatly exaggerated. I'm not accusing the guy of lying, just that there might be a couple factors that are being overlooked.

When I had my Kicker 2500.1 (and a measly 450/4), it would go about 4-5 minutes near full tilt before the car did not want to start. The battery would be hot from the draw. Maybe the battery has a diesel or gas generator attached to it. I could go 30 minutes on low volume if was working on the car or something.

However, that kicker did a every bit of a real 2500 watts, though.

Well, it's either 2 things

1. You have the most efficient amps on the planet
2. Those ratings are extremely exaggerated

Can't beat science my friend...

The group 34 yellow-top has a capacity of 55 amp/hrs. You can draw 110 amps for 30 minutes. This would be about 1200 average watts which is about right for a rated 3000 watt system playing music at a pretty good volume.

first of all nobody runs there amp at full power cuz basiclly your bound to mess one of your amps up ....i just explain the setup i had not that i was going to have it at full blast like if i was having a party.

In my replay i stated that i had the volume up not at full blast cause that would be just stupid of me if i ran my system like that without having my car on

Unfortanatly i cant run Alpine,Rf or JL products like most of ypu guys cuz...down here they dont sell it and if i were to ship it over it would cost me more thant what its really worth just in shippin

Im running 3 amps: Lanzar 1400 opti competition, DHD 4 ch amp 1000, and DHD 600 2 ch ,1.5 farad cap and kicker cross over

its not as good as the other brand most of you use but hey it works for me

no offence taken. it is annoying when im just messing around with stuff i dont like to crank it up so i dont fill my garage with exhaust/waste gas

i dont see a need for an extra battery. i think i will just wait till this one needs to be replaced and get a better one
