Post Pics Of Your Trunks (Systems)

the sub is in the right box. i was told to get that exact box from 5 different audio guru's on this forum. sized larger than JL specs call for.
why lose the beauty panel? it hides everything and makes the trunk look nice.
i'm not in this for the trunk space, i'll drive the SUV if i want to haul things.

In trunk space isn't a concerned, that should've been ported.

If you can have higher efficiency, with more power output, the only drawback is a larger gross volume, isn't that a worthy compromise? Ported extends lower, gets louder, and remains as flat. In your setup, where trunk space isn't a concern? Ported should have been the only option.
Nothing wrong with sealed, but ported enclosures do everything a sealed enclosure does and more, why not use them?

The only part I don't agree with is ported is usually not flat in a car, you get the hump around tuning frequency which isn't a bad thing as long as you have the EQ to tame it.

If you much go sealed, definitely go larger than recommended, it will be better in every possible way.
Ported will give much higher efficiency as in nearly double the output at the same power. Most of the time if it's tuned low, SQ will be every bit as good if not better than sealed. Around tuning frequency, the sub will have very little excursion so it's in a more linear range. Low excursion is always a good idea. I accomplish the same thing by running a pair of 15s. Ported does it with the tuning. With one of the only downsides being box size and with you saying you don't care about space and there's a bunch of dead space around the sub anyway, ported would be a natural choice. Just stay away from high tuned prefab boxes.

That is why most sq ported enclosures are ported at 28-30hz. And you can make a box that is very flat all the was to the tuning frequency and it will sound amazing!
SharksBreath, If you like it, then don't worry about it. I think what people are trying to say is that you could have made the box as shallow as possible to fit the sub and any space needed for the vent (I don't think the JL's have a vent, but I may be wrong). You then make it wider to gain the airspace and as tall as possible. No matter what, sealed or ported, that sub would sound better in a little larger box then spec calls for. So, you get better sound (smoother and lower) and gain trunk space back. A sealed enclosure is a HP filer on the sub itself, so you can get much lower bass by going ported (with a 28-30hz port tuning) or with a larger sealed box or Infinite Baffle - plus the ported and IB is more efficient!

Aaron, I got busy yesterday and I'm out at one of our rigs today so I'll PM you the plans later. Just spend $30 on an MDF sheet and you're good to go. If you wanna try IB then that's simple too. You'll get a lot of your trunk back either way.
My box only extends to the first crease in the trunk floor/carpet. Maybe 1" short or that or so

This is so F'ing annoying. This is the only site that won't accept pictures from me. I want to delete my entire profile.

I was going to fix those links.. but after looking at them... nvm.

You're just jealous.
I have a bad habit of doing "temporary" installs, installing as quickly and cheaply as possible to try something out. The real problem is when some of those temporary ones become permanent.

I wonder how the MTX 9500 does in IB. Get another and go IB. You might be louder, get lower and have TONS more trunk space. If you don't want to do that then you could probably build the box another 2-3" longer on each side and make it .05-1" taller and take out a good bit of depth from it

Most of the ones I've modeled, a single ported was louder at tuning frequency than 2 of the same sub in sealed or IB and usually the pair of subs were louder above and below tuning frequency. That's why for me it will always be a lot of cone area IB or ported or bandpass, no single sub in a sealed box for me ever again.

I just don't see the point of sealed as long as you have other options. The sealed box is a mechanical highpass filter that makes the sub very inefficient and power hungry down low to limit excursion. IB is the same thing with the same output potential but without the inefficient low end. It's up to the user to use the correct highpass or risk damaging the subs but that's pretty easy to do. Highpass it electronically instead of mechanically and gain a ton of efficiency.
Ported has obvious advantages as does bandpass.
This is just my opinion of course but if space is not an issue, use ported or bandpass. If space is an issue but your car is IB friendly, go IB which is like a super power efficient sealed that digs lower easier. If it's not IB friendly and space is a problem, then go sealed.
Obviously this doesn't apply for every scenario. A single 18 sealed might be louder than a single 10 ported but imagine that 18 ported.

I'm not trying to say that sealed is not fine, only that in the planning stages of things I would try the other options first. In your situation I would have gone sealed as well.

explain what an IB is?
We designed this box on a computer program and tuned it to 34hz.
this sub hit a 141.4 in a 2002 cadillac DTS but was in a sledgehammer box which was too small.
I am hoping for better results as it hit a 144.1 in a 1998 bravada with the sledgehammer box..
since then the box is 1/2 foot bigger and tuned to a different freq. and instead of a single slot it has the dual aero ports. from my experience the aero ports raises approx. 1 decibel to 1.5 after a retune on s.u.v's ported boxes can't speak from a car stand point

IB means infinite baffle. It's a sealed box without the back or sides of the sealed box. You just need to separate the front of the woofer from the back of the woofer. The trunk acts as a large sealed box, but when doing this it's called IB.
You seem to be more into competing though so I'd stick with ported

Infinite baffle. No enclosure, the front wave is separated from the rear wave and that's it. Very power efficient down low and digs very deep. Same SPL potential as a sealed box but with far less power required and usually a flatter response.
Excuse the dirty car, I get grief everytime I post that picture. This is the only way I know to have a pair of 15s and keep most of your trunk. The subs, and baffle weigh around 41lbs. Output is the same as sealed. I've only seen these particular subs metered once and they hit 142. Don't know if that was on the dash, door open or closed, etc. I have an excellent Dynaudio front stage with 10s in the doors, 3.5s in the kicks, and obvioiusly tweeters and it only takes 120w to each of the subs to nearly drown out the front that gets 800w.
