Porting Sub Enclosure?

I was just wondering if one could port a sub box that was designed without ports.
There's a box at Bestbuy that is made for 2 10" subs and is not ported. It is slanted and the demensions were roughly 14 X 17 X 13. It is divided into two compartments, one for each sub.
If the box was ported on each side (b/c it is divided), would it sound okay?

Thanks

Just cuting a hole in an enclosure and inserting a port (tube) is probably not the best thing to do. Speaker drivers are usually mated to enclosures based on a number of factors. Woofers have various specifications (Fs, VAS, Qts, Qes, etc) that are used by speaker designers to determine which enclosure type is best suited for the driver. Sometimes that is sealed, other times it is a ported. Sometimes a given driver can work in either enclosure. the size (volume) of the enclosure is critical in achieving the desired response. This is even more true with ported enclosures. Enclosure volume, port size (length and diameter) and port placement are very important.

Many vendors will often publish a list of recommended enclosures for drivers they sell. These are often a good starting point.

So the answer to your question is Yes, you can cut holes and put in ports. BUT, one usually does this with a a particular set of drivers in mind. Like, driver "A" will will perform well in a 2.5 CuFt box with a 3in dia port at 8 inches long. Then if you found a good deal on a 2.5 CuFt sealed enclosure you could get it and add the port.
