POP radar default off
Trying to determine if I should keep the POP radar off (default setting) or turn it on for an 8500 X50. Does anyone have any opinions? I believe POP radar is a new item, so it may not be in use yet. I drive mainly in central florida - but will be driving up to Chicago this Christmas thanks for any comments
8500 x50 is a radar detector by escort
POP is a new radar which works by transmitting short bursts within the allocated band to identify speeding cars in traffic. once target is ID'd the radar gun is turned to its normal operating mode to provide vehicle tracking history
also manual further says that in the POP radar operators manual from the manufacturer, tickets should not be given in this mode
all from passport 8500 x50 manual
i know its confusing

Yes, POP radar is NOT an accurate way to measure speed. Gunn oscillators used in radar guns need time to stabilize their frequency and without sufficient time to stabilize their frequency their margin of error can be huge! You could be doing the speed limit and be hit with POP radar and you could be cited for speeding. The closer you are the less the drift can be but even at pretty close distances such as the "whites of their eyes" range it can be off as much as 10mph!!!! Go out a ways and it can be off as much as 100mph!!!!!
