non-navi/Navigation conversion confusion

Ok...so from reading posts here, I assumed that a non-navigation to navigation install would be possible. Probably for somewhere from 2-3k? However, talking to a shop that does electrical work for my dealership - the shop seems to believe this is not possible.

The guy I was speaking to was talking about having to get a whole new steering column, dash kit, etc. He also talked about how hard messing with the different wire harnessed would be,etc.

i'm wondering if this is for full integration into the TL??? Is it that people who have done the conversion lack some commands or abilities that a normal nav TL has? Or does this guy not know what he's talking about?

Someone inform me here -since I was considering doing this in my TL.

EDIT: final question/thought - is it that it's really hard to do?

I don't know why he is saying that you would need a new steering column?? Yes you will have to add the Navigation push buttons to the steering wheel, but that should jsut be running the wire...etc. Anything that is different from navi to non-navi will need to be switched out...wire harnesses...etc.

navi

The factory navi Is possible. Right now I think the only people that have done the mod on a TL is Dan.....k, a guy named trashcan, which has a post with pictures. He is no longer around. Dan.....k had his installed in the Atlanta area by an installer that will not give up any info what soever. His install price is around $500.00 which is really good. From reading all the posts on the install from trashcan and dan.....k most installs have homemade harnesses made using what I think are the plugs from either TL's or???? I have a full harness from the trunk to the dash but the more I looked at it the only parts I can use are the 5 plugs for the navi unit. Right now I do not want to give anymore info until my installer performes the task. You can spend another 1k on just harnesses just for the plugs, and im not sure if you even need them. My install will happen in the next couple of weeks and Im going to make damn sure the install is fully documented and avalible so everyone can benefit. In the meantime check out dan...k post for he supplied all the part numbers needed for the install and the name and phone number of MR tight lips in Atlanta. My old posts give you info on where I bought my parts. Do not even waist you time talking to Acura, they will tell you it cannot be done. One hint, build a good repore with your acura parts guy, you may need him to get you the security code on your navi unit if you buy used!!!

To be continued.......

You will get all factory commands. Your installer is misinformed. All the parts needed are in my post in the garage.

If only Acura knew how many people would jump at the chance to add navi into their non-navi cars.... Granted it would be a little bit of a risky install, but with trained technicians, it could definitely be done.

I really do not think installing just the display and clock will work without installing the navi dvd rom unit also. The display unit uses a R.G.B. signal which communicates with the dvd rom unit which is the brains of the whole system. The navi system is definatly NOT a plug and play setup. One thing Acura is correct about is the navi and non navi cars are wired differently. Why do you want to install just the hvac clock and display??

The reason why i want it is here https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130539

going aftermarket is a bitch and so is the wire harness for the oem nav !

ed99 speculates that i can tap into the rgb on the nav screen for a converter. but i need to double check, so thats why im wondering if your installer can verify this.

also are you gonna get the converter to play dvds?

My installer probably wont be able to help. He has never done a factory navi install but I guess he has done some mods like Hid headlamps conversions and aftermarket navi installs. He actually is a Acura/Honda mechanic of 20 yrs that specializes in electrical repairs. I will ask him next week when we start the install.
