New IB sub
New IB sub
is there a direct replacement aftermarket sub that fits in the same spot the original is in? it is an 8" sub correct? any idea how much power the factory amp puts out to the sub?
About 30 to 40 watts... maybe.
The stock sub is free-air, not IB, although it would likely work as IB.
If want a direct replacement with little additional work, then look for a free-air sub.
There are some threads on here about some subs that mostly drop it.

I know many people have replaced the 8" sub with something else, but you're just polishing a turd. A flimsy metal sheet isn't the best mounting location for a sub (if you can even call this that). The factory amp gives the sub roughly 55 watts if I remember correctly, but no telling how clean that really is. Also, you have EQ going on in the amp and your x-over is already set so you're stuck with those unless you tap the signal BEFORE the factory amp, which is located in the passenger kick panel.
You have plenty of other options for space saving (seems like that's what you're going for here). You'll see them when you begin to search and pull up people that went a different route when asking the same question you have

I think the subject needs revisiting. In all my searching the forums for a drop in replacement that works well I found many people struggling with the rattling of the rear deck. I did not find anyone that had tried the drop in replacement to uncover the fact that most of the rattling was coming from the cover on the deck hitting the rear glass.
I am very happy with my .54 cubic feet sealed 10" enclosure in the trunk (fits nice and snug in the corner) but I do not think may subs would work this well in such a small enclosure (hitting it with about 450 watts).
Part of me wants to try cutting a couple of wood blocks to fit snug inside the deck to strengthen in, deaden surrounding area some more, and then fit a suitable 8" sub in there powered by about 100 -200 watts.
My recommendation would be to amp the sub separately unless not looking for a substantial improvement as most of the aftermarket subs are probably less efficient than the stock sub. My 10" Hertz hi energy sub is very efficient at 96 dB but they don't make these ones anymore. If you found a very efficient aftermarket sub I would try dropping it in, placing something in between the rear deck and glass and see how it does, then go from there.
Btw, some people are very good at polishing turds!

Drop in subs have been tried over the years, none with success. One person did an elaborate setup attempting to seal the deck with no success. The thing is, no 8" sub with enough throw for any sort of respectable output will be way too deep to fit in the deck. Any sort of respectable output will rattle the hell out of the sheet metal. To do it properly the front wave still must be sealed from tbe rear wave so you must seal behind the seats and any holes on the deck. It would hardly be any additional trouble to do a pair of 15s IB.
On a lighter note, they've started making the original IB15 again at $199 or even less if you buy 4 or more. I'm stocking up. Anyone want to go in halves to get the 4 or more discount?

That sounds good. I'm doing 4 of them no matter what but I figured I would share the discount if anyone else was interested. Looks like $175 is the price for the 15" if you order 4 or more. That's incredibly cheap for what you're getting. I won't be ready to order for a month or so but I'll PM anyone who is interested when the time comes.
Which sub are you running? The hi energy 10" I've found are 86db efficient 1w 1m. They have a misleading excursion rating using peak to peak instead of one way.

I read all that too.
thanks for the replies. i searched this before i asked the question and like what was stated above, there was never a clear cut answer besides buy a new sub and amp and mount it in the trunk. if there isnt any decent way to do it, ill get a sub and amp like i have done in every other car i owned. thanks for the replies.

I'm going to try but I have the IRS literally attempting to steal everything I've ever worked for right now so it's wholly dependent on what happens with those thieves. I would really like to go. If I do, you're more than welcome to have a listen.
I recently installed the following 8" Pioneer sub in place of the stock sub, re-wired the sub wires to RCAs to a Pioneer amp and it easily sounds 10x better than the stock sub. I got rid of the majority of the rattles in the rear deck and don't hear any rattles 90% of the time unless I turn it up too high.
I wasn't looking to be bumping anything high all the time, just wanted something that sounded better cause the stock sub wasn't cutting it.

I got the sub and amp for around $160

Is that an inferiority complex I see? Seriously, whenever someone is satisfied with their system you chime in to tell them why you think it needs to be improved. Who taught you that?
Lol. Its not about the magnet size, its the way you use it. But yeah, a short throw 8" is just not going to cut it for most without being ported. I hooked my stock sub to my home system just to see what kind of excursion it has and its only around 5/8" peak to peak before bottoming.
i had two Alpine 12's in a ported box with a JBL amp in my old RSX-S. i wasn't looking to go that extreme with the TL and wanted to look stock. i'm happy with how the Pioneer sounds over stock and got the amp/sub for a good price.
