Talking New head unit for 2008 TL

I wanted to buy a new aftermarket head unit wi navigation for my tl. I was first told by the guy at best buy that it is not possible then I was told by the tech guy I know that it was.

Can someone please clear this up for me. Thanks.

do you have factory navigation!?

it's a lot of work.
especially to make everything look OEM.

this is why best buy doesnt want to tackle it.
plus, the TL's head unit is pretty robust

So do you think I should go for OEM instead? If so how much do you think that would run me?

Yea....I hate my phones navigation and I'd prefer to have the navigation built in the car. If you have another suggestion I'm all ears

^to swap the factory nav over it'll cost close to $1200-1300 dollars.

the factory nav sucks big donkey bawls anyway. not sure why you would want this; when phones are 10x better and ahead of the curve.

this then leads to retrofitting a tablet into the radio.

There are two threads out there that have steps on how to do a conversion for adding an Acer Tablet which has almost the exact dimensions of the non-nav bezzle. Here are the links.

Excellent write up here.

This one is a bit more recent. Watch out for the top LED, it is super fragile.

I was thinking about doing this when I had my 06 base TL. I was thinking if I could find a wrecked TL or TL-S I could swap the top LED panel where the clock is in ours with the one from there if I broke the display though it probably didn't have the same pin-out as a non-nav so I'm not sure if it would have worked at all.

what did you do with the two silver garnish pieces.
the aluminum trim that goes all the way to the arm rest.
what did you do with the half circles?
this is one of the reasons why its hard, because replacing the head unit with an aftermarket unit will leave those half circles, making it like an after thought...

also, a custom bracket will need to be made.

all this makes it not worth it for someone without shop skills.

its easier and more beneficial for a tablet install.

Yeah the ability to maintain functionality is not that difficult. Having an acceptable integration of the HU into the center stack is the difficult part.

not to mention; being ahead of the curve and being able to update software as android is always improving
