New Depeche Mode on DVD-A????

For those Depeche Moders out there (like me) in reading the information on Mute's web site, it appears that the new Album (do they call them albums anymore?) "Playing the Angel" to be released on October 18th may be in DVD-A format......here is what is on their web site, and tell me if you read the same thing I do...

Notes: This is the first album to come with a bonus DVD. On the UK release, the "Deluxe Edition" comes with a SACD, and a DVD. For the US release, the "Deluxe Edition" has the same content, but comes as a CD and a DVD (with the DVD having the UK SACD's surround mixes).

So, since the UK release comes on SACD, in surround mixes, does that mean the DVD we get will be in DVD-A format???? I'm crossing my fingers that soon DM will be in 5.1 in my Acura next week!

I haven't read the official site, but your quoted portions lead me to think the DVD is a video DVD, not DVD-A.

It would be interesting to simply rip the audio tracks from the DVD-V and burn them to a DVD-A. I'd think that would be pretty easy, but I haven't tried doing that.

But they wouldn't be mixed in 5.1 audio

Why not? I meant to say that a DVD-A could be burned from the 5.1 tracks extracted from the DVD-V. I agree there'd be little point in doing it from stereo tracks.

Edit: Too bad the DVD doesn't have all the tracks, though.

Bluenoise,
That is a great idea, and i may have to pursue it.
And yes, the DVD does have all the tracks.

Disc 2
1. "Playing The Angel" in 5.1 and stereo [52:43]

Playing the Angel is the name of the whole album, not 1 song.

You're right! I assumed it was just a title song, but I didn't notice the duration. If you do it, let us know how it works out.

Nope gang, it's 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital, but it's clearly marked as DVD Video. Enjoy the album though.

Ya, saw that! Great new CD by the way!!! Uses more analog synths along with the guitar sound they've moved more into. But it harkens back to Black Celebration and Music for the Masses sound...much better than Exciter!!! Also more of an uptempo CD.....it will be a favorite of DM fans!!!

Now that I know how to creat my own DVD-A disc from DVD-V audio files, I'll just convert this and voila! 5.1 depeche mode DVD-A in the TL!!! YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Be sure to check out the DTS tracks on the DVD. Awesome sounds. Yeah, definitely reminds me of both those albums. Great stuff.

Oh great, more depressing drivel from Martin Gore. (Just kidding)

Actually, I'm a pretty big DM fan. Can't find any classic DM in DVD-A format though. Pity.

I wonder if there is any software out there that can break the SACD code and would allow for us TL owners to create our own DVD-A's out of SACD's. Depeche has 2 SACD's in their catalog, 101, and this new disc, but you'd have to get the import of PBTA to get the SACD. I did convert the DM concert video (Live in Paris) to DVD-A...and that sounds decent, and it's in 5.1.

I suspect the easiest route toward getting SACD -> DVD-A would be an analog transfer from a SACD player into a computer's 6-channel input.

Another good point. And it can be done with DVD-audio Solo software, and even uses lossless recording when doing so...problem is, your going from digital, to analog, back to digital. So there will be some loss of fidelity somewhere. But it can be done.

Quick review of the DVD-V to DVD-Audio transfer of the new DM release....
One word...fantastic!!! If you do it, definitly use the DTS track instead of the DDS. I created two groups, the first one is the DTS conversion, and the 2nd group the DDS conversion. DTS is so much more smoother, goes deeper, or stronger in the bass area, and the music is fuller! The use of the surrounds on this mix is awesome. They really did a good job of using them in a non gimmicky way, yet definitly uses them a lot. It really brings you into the music. I always thought DM would be a great group to put into this medium. Their music is so layered, that sometimes you miss some of it on lesser systems. You won't miss anything with this mix....awesome! DM fans, do your self a favor, get the special edition of this release, download DVD audio extractor for free (30 day free use), and download DVD-Audio Solo software for free (limited time use), and created one for yourself on a DVD-R (don't use DVD+R) You'll be very happy you did!

DVD-V to DVD-A

I also have converted the DM DVD-V to DVD-A. It sounds pretty good but not the best DVD-A I have heard..... that goes to Dido Live !!!

Well, when you convert a DVD-V to a DVD-A, it's really not true DVD-A. It's not originally recorded with lossless equipment, and so the quality won't be what a true DVD-A mastered disc would be. But it's nice to be able to do this and play it in our TL's.
