New Camera Idea

Have any of you have had a problem with parallel parking because you cants see the front of your car (not sure how much room left)? new idea hit me today while waxing the car!!

The A symbol in the grill has a hollow spot at the bottom, you could but a tube camera in there and run the wires throughout the engine compartment to a toggle switch which gives power to the camera. The video would go into a Y switcher, like the ones at radioshack which has two inputs and one output (whichever source is stronger gets the output). In one, plug in the front camera, and the other backup camera. the power could come from somewhere (not sure but i think the fusebox) for the front and the rear hooked up to the backup lights(previous installs)and be all put together with doms nav to go.

I will draw up a diagram and post it later.

The blue arrow points to where the camera can be located, and the wires behind the grill

this is doms device, the arrow points where the rear camera plug goes, instead buy something like this from radioshack (store only) and plug there, then in new two ports plug in backup camera and front camera

Y splitter

and a seprate switch can control power to the front camera (toggled by user)

if u hit a puddle/rock/snow it can damage the camera , the grills are on a side so the viewing angle would be of no help. plus the wires can probably be run easily behind the grill.

Someone PM'ed me with a similar idea. Now that I think about it, with a camera in front, you'll have to worry about flying debris and also heat from the engine/radiator.

Its a nice idea though. Will you be the first to try it csmeance?

In the "A" u shouldnt have to worry about heat, but as for flying debris, u might need to add an extra lens or something. It would be pretty cool to watch it while driving down the road. (as a passenger, of corse. not while driving, lol)

one mistake i make, the video would go into the other one, meaning where you would usually plug in the dvd player, no the backup camer because dom's device overides it with the reverse plugs(if u are confused i explain it better)

list of items:
2 cameras
1doms device
source of power
camera switch
rca extensions
rca y splitter
NAVI
Dvd player
drill

basic list for a person who dosen't have the conversion yet. below is a list for the people that have the dvd conversion and the backup camera

1 camera
camera switch
rca extentsion
source of power
drill

What kind of fun is that train of thought?? For the most part, none of this would void any part of the warrenty, well maybe the nav screen, but that is if the can prove that it was the device that did it. If you are smart, you remove all that beofre you take it in.

So what if you look your keys in the car and you have a key but not a key fob? how are you going to get in?? It could void your lock warrenty!!

why would u put a camera in front of your car....isnt that what your eyes and windshield are for? sounds to me like ur overdoing it.
why would u want to get any closer to a car than you can actually SEE? if you're that close, then they're just gonna hit you instead.
a little superfluous to me.

you could see it but sometimes you can't and city parking can be really crazy. Also for the door, you can pull of the thing by just realeasinf the tab and the key hole is there plus its only a 2 dollar part (incase i break it.)

This is a very similar idea to what has already been done to the A-Spec concept that rounds the Auto Show circuit. Although not in the same location, you get the idea. Below is a pic I took a the Washington D.C. Auto show this past January:

Great idea. More cameras with a selector switch to choose which camera view, split screen, or cycle through the views. With some inexpensive video surveillance gear this is doable.

The A-spec concept grill would have very narrow field of view. The camera lens would have to be poking out the front for the angle to be usable. The camera hidden there would be perfect for a night vision system but if you are going to pursue that, I suggest you check out the night vision threads over at the mp3car forum.

It would be useful to have a camera mounted in the right side view mirror facing down so that you can see the front and rear wheels as they approach a curb when parking.
