Need more bass while looking stock...

I want to have more bass...not horrendously loud bass that renders you ear-less, but I do want a little thump. The thing is, I want my car to look as close to stock as possible. I know little about stereos and such (I'm also going to do the simple tvandnav2go conversion for my ps2 in a couple weeks with my own ingenuity and a little advice from ITL ), and my car is entirely stock at this point. I'd appreciate any advice to help out me and my 06 tl/nav - I'm willing to give tax advice or help (not help paying your taxes, though) in exchange for said advice. Thanks in advance guys and girls.

I suppose it really depends on the options I have...I want to spend about $20, but I can spend however much I need to. I just want value...I don't to spend $2000 if I can get basically the same thing for $300.

One thing I was thinking was to just replace the stock sub with something better, and put the amp somewhere inconspicuous. However, I read on some thread that replacing the stock sub is basically impossible. Just as long as I can do it myself...I like the feeling of having done it with my own hands.

one audiophile on a different forum said that its junk because the sound deadning in the cars renders it useless. It would just be better to get a JL 8w3v2 sub and use it as free air in the stock location.

So you're saying...

1) The Infinity would (probably) be fine in my wife's Jeep GC, and

2) even for a beginner, buying a separate amp and sub & replacing the stock unit wouldn't be a really big deal, and is probably worth doing.

I'm certainly alright with buying separate units, but I'll probably need advice on that, too, and I don't want to wear out my welcome with questions. If you guys say that sub is about the best to replace the stock sub with and there are no better ones that fit in there, then that's what I'll get. I don't see what differences there are in amps, though. I know not to buy knock-off, no-name junk, but amongst the big companies, I'm at a loss to differentiate.

well the one in my trunk is definately not junk. Sounds good and adds alot to the low end. If your not looking to add alot this is perfect in my opinion. But think as you will, and over do it.

Do you think that's the best sub for the job? I want it to thump pretty well, and I worry that the same size sub wouldn't quite do it for me. However, it's been a while since I've messed with any type of speakers in cars (5 yrs or so) and I was pretty young when I did (I had 2 competition Kicker 15"s with 1800 running into them). I'm not looking to recreate that by any means, but I don't want the same bass. I think I'm pushing overkill here on this subject, though.

Anybody around Houston with something close to stock that cares to meet up sometime so I could take a look/listen? I hate buying anything without knowing how well it will work.

Are you completely satisfied?

Do you have any problem with rattle from the rear deck? I have already had to take my car to the dealership twice because of excessive rattle/vibration in the rear deck. How much of a bass improvement do you think this mod is on a scale of 1-10? Would you recommend this same mod or go with more of an upgrade?

didnt rattle anymore after I sound deadened it

I would say it is about 3 times as much bass as the stock provides. Equal almost to one 10 sub in a sealed box. It wasnt enough for me though so I fiberglassed a JL 10w3v3 into rear deack. WOW now that bastard hits!! It hits harder than my friends two 12" kappa setup. I love it now. I fiberglassed the box myself, .70 cu ft of space for sub and can still fit luggage underneath it and it will never move around in trunk during "spirited driving." I dont have any pics of new completed setup.

How hard is it to replace the stock sub with that first JL you had? Does the rear deck come in and out easy?

Thanks. I'm thinking about doing the 8"mod. The 10" would be nice, since I just sold my old car with two 12" subs. I'm just trying to get close to what I had without compromising space and the factory look. What was the total price again? Any suggestions on replacing the other rear deck speakers?

You can do this:

or this:

OR BOTH! (keeping factory still on)

I have a knob up front to control the Basslink II and it's simple to adjust the knob on the unit under the seat.

How do you like the Basslink II and how are you running the power cable and remote wire to the trunk or where are you tapping it from?

I heard ratteling in my 06 TL. Took it to the dealer only to find I blew my sub-woofer out.. So new one on the way.. I was told I should keep my sub on a negative number.. I had that shit up and bumpin.. may have to get another sub-woofer once they replace it. Dealer suggested for me to get something to add more base and take the pressure off the sub.

Does it need a new amp?

Did you need to do anything on the AMP side of things, or did you just replace the stock sub with a new one? Seems like a fairly quick and easy upgrade. Did the sub fit right in or did you need to modify the rear desk in order to get it to fit?

Thank for the info!

Sorry for the long wait to reply. I'm on the train and just loaded Vista on m i640m and currently BT between my Dash and laptop via PAN using T-Mobile data service...

I ran power to the battery and remote turn on to the stock amplifier. I really like The BLII. No clearance issues (nice and tight) and I mounted it to MDF and covered it with auto carpet so I can take it out anytime.

the 8 fits right in. The 10 I have in there now required cutting, and I fiberglassed it in, made the enclosure .85 cu ft.

LOC (line output converter) takes the stock sub speaker wires as an input and outputs AV cable.

I like those enclosures, are they for sale at any websites or audio shops or are they custom enclosures?

does this just need to happen on the back of the deck, or can we just pull this off of the sub in the back?

did you replace your stock speakers as well? If you didn't...does the sub overtake the stock speakers at all?

They say to install the LOC closest to point of origin as possible (the radio) yet I have found it is just fine to run it off of the sub wires at the rear deck.
