SOMEONE HELP. I dropped my car off at Bestbuy excited about getting my Rockford Fosgate sub Dual Coil Over punch Stage 3 that can push 500 rms continous and 1000 w peak installed in my car. Also have a Kenwood amp
Specs:
Kenwood Amp # two-channel car amplifier specs
# 170 watts RMS x 2 @ 4 ohms
# 250 watts x 2 RMS @ 2 ohms
# 500 watts RMS x 1 bridged output at 4 ohms
The tech called me and said that the amp I purchased wont be able to power the sub because its a dual coil over sub and that i needed a mono block sub. He said I would have to buy a new sub he told me about a ALPINE 12 inch single coil over Sub that Handles up to 600W peak power (200W RMS) this costs $150.00. I asked people on here and they all said the amp would be ok. Does this make any sense to you guys. please I need advise.
With the installation of dynamat, 8 guage wires, putting the sub in box, he has to install the amp on the flap in the trunk that lowers down if I wanted to put skis or anything long thru that spot. The amp was too big to be put under the passenger seat. Everything is going to cost $450-$475.00.

lol. u can run ur kenwood amp on a DVC sub. DVC subs were only even MADE for the purpose of putting one amp on each coil, aka two amps per sub. when 1000rms subs came out, there weren't a lot of cheap 1000w rms amps out there..but u could get two 500rms subs not too bad, so two to one sub...ur set.
anyways yea u can do it u just have to wire it right. btw, don't goto best buy, they are morons. goto a local car stereo shop, or even circuit city or hifibuys or tweeter, best buy is just garbage.

If you're trying to drive a dual-voicecoil sub with a mono amp, just wire the two coils in series. This effectively makes them act as a single coil. If both coils are 8 ohm, though, and your amp can handle 4 ohms, wire them in parallel instead.
WDP,
Your guy must be paid for every sale he makes or he doesn't know jack about car audio!!!! If I were you, I'd get your car out of there immediately, and bring somewhere else, or do it yourself!!! If you want to know how to configure your dual ohm sub, go here: http://www.edesignaudio.com/wiring.php

Let me clearify however. It depends on the ohm value of the sub you have. What value is your RF sub? If it's a dual 4 ohm sub, then you can configure it for a total of either 2 ohm, or 8ohm effective value to the amp. Which means, your going to drive it with only one of the channels in your amp at 250 watts RMS. Which means, it will work fine, but your not utilizing the whole amp power to go to the sub. The sub will sound just fine, but your only putting in half the power it can handle. So, yes, it will work, but since your amp is not stable down to 2 ohm bridged, your stuck with only 250watts. So in a sense, your installer is correct in that a monoblock would be stable down to 2 ohm bridged. Thus you would be utilizing all the power from that amp, and no channels are wasted. So please strike my previous comment from the record!
If you find that you can't return the kenwood for something that is 2 ohm stable, and your stuck with it, then fear not, it will work, and sound fine, but you have 250watts on a channel that your not using..........

Your other choice would be to return your RF sub dual 4ohm for a RF sub dual 2 ohm. Most manufactures carry both types. Then you'd be able to configure the new sub for a 4 ohm value, thus being able to use your amp in bridged mode, and sending 500watts to it.

Thanks for everyones help
What the tech suggested was for me to get a ALPINE 12" sub that is compatiable with the Kenwood amp I have. It was much cheaper when he suggested for me to get a new amp from there department. Installation with Alpine sub was great. The bass is good and all. Now my car is back in there installation shop getting Dynamat put in my trunk to prevent the annoying rattling. I'll have my car back in a few hrs . I'll let you guys know how everything went.

Speaking of Best Buy I had a piss poor experience with them as well. I took my car to them last year - I think it was the first 04 TL they had ever worked on and all I was doing is hooking up a sub, to a 5ch amp using only the factory sub with a LOC and the sub output on the amp. So I got to pick it up and the sub would only produce a deep hum = no bass. Good thing he didn't charge me for the install or I would have gone balistic!
So I took a look at it and realized the LOC had not been grounded - so I grounded it and well looky here........ deep bass pouring out of my trunk. And the dude told me he had worked on car stereos for 8 years and could not figure it out and I should take the car elsewhere since he had called around and none of his other 'installer' buddies could figure it out either. I also later realized that he had broken the latches for the rear seat bottom cushion. Moral of the story - refuse to pay for the work and take it elsewhere - or follow the advice of knowledgeble stereo guys on this forum - after all thats what they are here for.
