Navigation not working

My 2006 Acura TL's navigation system does not work. The screen is grayed out, with a little illumination but nothing else. On a couple of occasions, it has suddenly started working for a period of several hours, but then it stops working again. This has been going on for several months. Other than taking the car to the dealer for a new system, what can I do to resolve this problem?

Probably best to avoid the dealer if you are handy or competent with hand tools.

1) Eject and inspect the Navi DVD from the trunk drive.
If the DVD has circular gouges in it, you should pull the DVD drive and send it to Alpine's Torrance, CA location for a rebuild of the drive @ $358.
2) If the DVD is undamaged, try using a DVD cleaning disc in the Navi drive to see if that helps.
If that does not help, you can try partial disassembly for a manual deeper cleaning-- instructions are in the thread here: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-a...errors-873489/
3) If cleaning does not work, send the DVD drive to Alpine's Torrance, CA location for a rebuild @ $358.

A dealer would probably also send the drive to Alpine, but also charge you a premium for removing the Navi drive.

G/L.
