Navi screen replacement.... help please!

So, I just brought my car into the dealership today to have my navi system checked out due to a disk read error. They diagnosed that there was an internal malfunction on the navi system and needs to be replaced. Unfortunately my navi was not covered by the warranty. So my question is, if I were to replace the screen myself, I would just need to buy the screen itself. The screen pretty much contains the brains to the navi right? If I'm correct the whole navi system is pretty much the screen and the dvd reader in the trunk.

It's probably the Navi's brain-- the DVD drive in the trunk-- and not the touch screen.
There are some threads on AZ about dead Navi drives and disk errors which were remedied by sending the drive to the manufacturer (Alpine).
Contact Alpine USA-- it'll have you remove the drive, ship it to Alpine for repair and return it to you for installation for about $150-200.

G/L, and welcome to AZ!

Agreed- the dealership is good at replacing parts (at high cost to you) but not truly troubleshooting a specific problem. It would seem intuitive that a 'disc read error' would be inherent in the disc reader (trunk) and not with the Navi screen. I think I wouldn't really trust what the dealer is telling you.

The problem is either the disk or the drive, and either one will be about 200 dollars to fix. If you look in the 3G garage, there is a thread with all the info on where to send in the drive and who to call to get it fixed. Also whoever told you the screen doesn't know what they are doing at all, the brain for the navigation unit is the dvd drive in the trunk. The screen simply displays the image and does all the management work for the temperature controls.

Maybe you've tried this - but on my '05 I had the same error. I ejected the disc in the trunk, cleaned it, and the problem never came back. Worth a shot at least.

Yeah I tried that did not work. If the dealer is correct I believe my drive is the problem and hopefully will be repairable
