when you turn the headlights on during the day- and the nav display is set to auto- auto means on with headlights!
That way its bright screen in the daytime and dimmer screen display at night, (the car thinking thats how you are using the lights)
Keeps you from getting cabin light blindness

Best to use the dash lights at minimum you need to see the guages too, it really helps you see better outside the car

Hmmmmm I'm wondering if the Navi screen lighting is based off the light sensor on the dash as opposed to the headlights being off or on??? I do notice the Navi dim down when I do turn on the headlight though.

The Navi is PARTLY independent of the dash lights, as follows:

One of the setup options for the Navi lets you set the screen to "Off" (self-explanatory), "Day" (meaning it stays in day mode regardless of the headlights/dash lights), "Night" (meaning it stays in night mode regardless of the headlights/dash lights), and "Auto" (meaning that it will be in day mode until you turn on the headlights, at which point it will normally go into night mode).

"Auto" is typically the most useful mode.

There is one exception to "Auto" being synced to the headlights, however. If you have your dashboard lights set to maximum brightness, the Navi will switch to "Day" mode. Generally at night you wouldn't have your dash lights turned all the way up. But if you need to use your headlights during the day due to inclement weather or due to driving on a two-lane road, then you'll want to set your dashboard lights to max brightness and you'll DEFINITELY want your Navi to be in "Day" mode. Fortunately, there is an easy way to achieve both things WITHOUT altering your nighttime settings for your dashboard lights: Use the "MAX" button next to the gauge cluster. It acts as a toggle switch—with your headlights on, press it once to turn the dashboard lights to max brightness and the Navi to "Day" mode, then press it again to change it back to how you had it set for nighttime operation.

If you have your Navi set to "Auto" and it doesn't dim when you turn on the lights, check your dashboard light control and you'll probably find you had it on max.
