Question Navi boot time

Maybe this should be tagged on to the sticky about hacking the Nav, but it would probably just get lost there.

What I'm wondering is since the TL's DVD includes so many bin files for other model years, and other Honda/Acura vehicles, is that part of the reason it takes so long to boot? I mean, is it having to sift through a bunch of unrelated bin files, etc., so it can call only the dll's and executables and graphics it needs for the specific car?

It just occurred to me it might be like a PC loaded with too much stuff ... it takes longer to boot because it's preloading a lot of crap it doesn't need.

I won't have a chance to test this for awhile, but if someone has some time to burn a CD omitting the bin files for the other TL models, it would be interesting to see if it loads the mapscreen faster. The RL's system seems to use only a much smaller bin, and it loads like lightning.

Anyone?

I think it only loads the BIN that's named in the diagnostic menus. Unlike a PC, everything it needs is in that file and no others are read just because they're there. The boot time is pretty long, but it only bugs me if I just started the car and I want to set up a trip. Then that 20-30 seconds feels extremely long.

It would be nice if everything that gets loaded at startup was sitting in non-volatile memory instead. I'm guessing that's what's happening on other cars where the system is available nearly instantly.

angrydad mentioned something about the wait time being unavoidable. He would be the best to know if anybody.

the wait time has nothing to do with the bin files, the bin is not loaded of the disk each time it starts. The bin stays loaded in a flash rom memory what you waiting for is the navi.exe to call up the map info relating to your current global position, the only way to reduce the lag time is a better processing system.

I can agree to that. If the BIN files where loaded each time, then our hacks wouldn't work in the first place. All of the hacks work because the navi system keeps a partial copy of the BIN files in memory.

You are welcome to spend the time and prove me wrong though.

good thread.

side note: has any one of you run into problem with modded navi (wallpaper, nag-screen, ok button) when getting a service done at acura dealership?

or everyone just reload the original back before going in for service?

I've brought my car in for service twice with the startup screen changed. They haven't said anything.

I hadn't thought about that. In that case, it sure does take a long time to get that map displayed!

Doh! Me either.

Of course the bin is held in flash, or else the hack wouldn't hold as datmman points out. Oh, well, it seemed like a good thought at the time.

let me re-phrase that.

has any Acura service advisor/tech said/mentioned anything about the modded Navi (all 3 mods)?

I assume it doesn't void any warranty, right?
