Nav player failing?
Nav player failing?
I brought my '04 TL in for an A124 service today, pointing out that the Nav player was now *always* giving me a disc read error/see dealer message upon startup.
The reply was that the disc was all scratched up and that at a minimum I would need to buy a new one from Acura. Or, possibly, the player was going. That would require it being sent out for an evaluation/repair to the tune of a few hundred $.
I had not thought of the DVD player as a mileage-related-wear-prone item, but obviously it is. Does anyone have any constructive thoughts/suggestions on dealing with this? The least costly course of action at the moment seems to be to see if I can read the disc on a PC and if not, buy a new disc. If *that* doesn't work, then I need to think about the player.
Is there any trick available for dealing with Acura so that I don't have to buy the disc, thereby minimizing my costs if it turns out to be the player as well? Has anyone else had issues? I noticed when I first cleaned off the disc that there was thin layer of dust/"soot". But it had not occured to me that this could be a routine, persistent problem...

Borrow a disk from another 3G TL ('04 thru '06; do not use an '07 disk) and test it in your drive. If it boots successfully, it is indeed your disk.
The dealership should have a few TLs on their lot.

Dirt in the nav dvd will kill it just like the player at home.
Try running a cd cleaner disc in it and reboot
The one in my 01 died back under warranty- the dealer tried a known good disc- it wouldnt boot so they replaced whole dvd player
The updated/revision nav dvd is a common thing to need every 2 years because they update software and mapping. For gen2 its 200$
go to www.acura.com and there is buy a nav disc section with prices

Problem solved ...
Thanks for the replies. The problem was solved by getting a CD/DVD player cleaning disc (the ones with the small brushes on them). What I did was
- take the original nav disc and put it in my PC. Not only could I see the file structure, but I was able to fire up "imgburn" software (freeware) and burn a copy of DL disc to an ISO file (6GB total size). At least it read and created the file with no read errors. So that told me that it most likely was *not* a problem with the disc.
- after seeing the above comment about getting a cleaning disc and wondering why the heck I didn't think of that (or, more importantly, why didn't the service people think to try that rather than tell me my only options were going to cost a few hundred dollats), I put such a disc in the nav unit and rebooted.
- the problem with the normal cleaning discs is that there is nothing on them for the TL's DVD-ROM player to recognize, so it only spins for a little bit before it recognizes it as a "bad" disc. So only doing it once didn't work. I had try to boot 3 or 4 times from the cleaning disc before it had spun enough to clean off the player's optics. At that point I was able to put the Nav disc back in and get the nag screen we all know and love
So, thanks *very much* to the above respondents for the help. If only the Acura people had as much initiative and intelligence ...

Well, I bought a CD cleaner (like $5 or so) then cycled it through my player in the trunk about a half dozen times. Since doing that, I haven't had an issue in two months of useage. This is another great fix, many thanks goes out to 01tl4tl!

You MUST run it several times (I did it about 10) to properly clean the lens; hope this helps. By the way, you can pick this up just about anywhere including Wally-World.

i bought an 05 tl about a month or so ago. the first week i bought it my battery died so when i charged it up the nav would not work after a day or so it worked again on its own, then a few days after that i burned an mp3 disc so i could listen to my music and i get three disappointments, 1. not capable to read mp3. 2. no aux port 3. my nav goes bad right after i eject the mp3 disc. i dont know if it was due to that but it worked prior to that. any suggestions it has bben well over two weeks and my nav still tells me to go to my dealer.
