Thumbs down Myron & Davis Ad212 -- Avoid!

In May, I undertook a DVD/Nav conversion install on myself in my '04 TL.

I used Doms nav/converter box, the AD212, wendy's camera, DCC's dvd/nav switch and a FM Modulator that I actually get great sound through (no static).

A week after the install, my FIRST AD212 pooped out on me. The unit worked fine until it tried to load a disc. Just said 'loading' forever. Tried everything to no avail. Contacted M&D, bad unit. Since purchased on ebay, M&D being the P.O.S. company that they are would not do an exchange.

So, being that I needed another 3/4 din as I installed my dvd player in the rear armrest, and I really liked the color of the lights as they match somewhat the interior lights, Yes, I did it again and bought another AD212 off of ebay.

This one actually gave me about a month of use. But yesterday, I went to turn on the unit and here is what happened:

It powers up, then goes off!!! powers up again for 2 seconds and off.

Turn the car off and on and it powers up again for 2 seconds and off, tried again and the same thing. On the third try, nothing. No powering on at all. I must have tried this over ten times.

I decided to check all my fuses, wiring for 12v and constant on and the ground. No problems.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS .... 2 units in less than two months. I am out over $300 and now I have to rip out the armrest, rewire another player and of course buy one!!!
I know this unit has been a staple of TL'ers but I cannot believe the run of bad luck I am having. Maybe the units off of ebay were refurbs, I don't know. I cannot believe it is my car or the way I am using the unit. It has never been abused...

I can tell you this, goodbye Myron & Davis. Your products suck!

Now, Any suggestions for another 3/4Din Player I can use????

do you think the location of the payer has anything to do with it being in the armrest i dont imagine it would get the airflow it is designed for

Maybe you should have just bought a new one from a dealer so warranty would have not been a problem. Good luck with what ever one you deciede to get though

That sucks dude.

How are you powering this unit? It makes a difference.

Lembowski bought a car adapter for the Mediagate he is using off of eBay. It powered up the unit okay, but when he tried to play anything, it froze. Then it just stopped loading after a while. We switched over to my car adapter (because I too have the Mediagate) and it worked fine. It works fine with the home adapter as well.

Just some thoughts. Good luck with your next purchase!

I have constant power to the fusebox via a minifuse on fuse 35.
the 12v is on a minifuse on fuse 34.

As far as I know, this should not be a problem.

Many people have their dvd installed in the armrest without issues. I barely use the player also. I would think I would have a problem while the unit was on if there was an overheating issue...

I would have had the whole setup done by a professional installer if I did not want to save $$$$. The idea was to buy good products that would not give me problems. I was not concerned on me doing the install.

Any ideas on a new DVD player?

I didn't buy any products off of E-bay for that very reason. No warranty. I was told to stay away from M&D. I also was told most 3/4 DIN DVD players are shit. But from my research the M&D unit is the best 3/4 DIN unit out there. You may want to reconsider your DVD location but I know that's not easy because you have already cut into your armrest. Another idea would to buy an M&D unit from an authorized dist.

Problem Solved! Well, not really.

I decided to eliminate the black box (noice cancelling) between the unit and the power & ground wires.

It works. I called M&D and told them about this and they mentioned a large, bad batch of ad212's with this very same problem.

There seems to be a little more static, not sure about the picture yet after I did this.

Still a POS! This should not happen....

I'm willing to bet that batch is all on ebay

You should try this dvd player:

Accelevision 8500

I have been using this dvd player for a couple of months and love it. It's very small in size. The best thing about this player is that it has controls on the player itself so you don't have to use the remote and it has a/v inputs in the front. I believe TvandNav2go also carry this player.

Any other updates on the AD212? I plan on buying this just because it is 3/4 DIN and it lights up blue. Anyone else have problems with this unit?

Try the Accelevision. It's also a 3/4 DIN player and it also lights up blue.

It doesn't look like either one is really readily available. Accelevision seems OK, I saw that one, but it still looks more bulky than than the M&D and I don't think it will work for a dash console install. I want to do an install similar to the one done by slimmyjimmy. I think that looks slick and stock. My only worry is the reliability of the unit.

I looked into the Accelevision when I was thinking about doing the mod but my installer (whom I completely trust by the way) told me that he has had a lot of people come back to him with issues and problems with the Accelevision. It also just looks a lot bulkier and hefty than the Myron & Davis one.

I honestly haven't had any issues with my Myron & Davis DVD player. I've had it for about half a year now and it's still working great. It's definitely the best fit for the car if you want to retain the stock factory look.

I, too, own a M&D ad212 for three years now, and so far so good. It had issues with scratching my DVD's after playing them. But since I bought it from a authorized dealer, M&D replaced it for free, under warranty. I suppose their service is only good, if you purchased it from a dealer.

Guys I am resurrecting this one from the dead for an update.

I sucked it up and installed a Myron & Davis AD212 since July 2007 and it has been running flawlessly. Has anybody else reported failures? Am I one of the only ones now converted to praising this unit? I actually am so glad I bought this unit and not another one.

unfortunatley i've been having problems with mine. About a lil more than a year after I had it installed, everytime i put a dvd in there, it processes it and then it reads "No Disc". I have to keep ejecting it and putting the dvd back in about 20 times (seriously) in order to make it work. Anyone having this problem or I'm i just doing something wrong? Yes I have tried regular dvds that were not burnt or made and still have same problem.

I have only had that problem with a disc of some kind of weird format. Anything that's supported plays fine. Try a DVD player cleaner maybe?
