I say this because I have an iRiver mp3cd player and I lost my wall charger. The wall adapter that came with the mg-25p fit but didnt go all the way in. I ended up snipping some of it away with a wire cutter. Lo-n-behold I have a charger for my mp3cd player

no can do. you're stuffing wire inside the plug charger tip, NOT inside the player. The charger plug is too deep, the wire fills up the plug a bit so the inner "hole" portion will make contact with the male portion of the player receptacle.

the yellow plastic tip isolates the inner + from the outer -...
If you have the adapter, and look at it, you'll understand the directions I'm trying to provide.

I think someone said they have the MG-35 and is using it in their car. I'm wondering how you power the unit as the plug is a bit different than the MG-25?

This is not really a good shot, but the PWR plug has 4 pins(it seems to be the same on all my other 3.5" hard drive enclosures.

Riiight.. sorry about that.

The MG-35 uses a power adapter similar to laptops. I guess you will have to look for a compatible car adapter. The easy route is just to use a power inverter and plug the power adapter into that.

That's what I was thinking, using the power inverter. Would it be ok to use the cigarette lighter for both Dom's unit and the power inverter? Crap I almost forgot about the USA spec adapter I will be using, how/where will I power that?

USASpec needs no power.

I've made some progress on getting ahold of a "Car Kit" for the MG-35...Still looking for one specifically for the MG-35, but it looks like several other media devices use the same 4-pin power plug and also the same infrared extender cable...

Here are some links for the car power adapter for the Modix HD-3510, which appears to use the same plug:

I ordered one of these on 9/5/2006, and I'll let you know if it works with the MG-35.

Power inverters generate a lot of heat, can be very noisy and usually introduce "hum" into the audio output of the device they are powering.

I have a 60watt small inverter from radioshack that is not too much bigger that the plug on that one . It works well and doesn't get really hot........and certainly doesn't hum.

The Mediagate MG-25 requires 5V at 2 A, which means 10 W (Power = Voltage x Current). Lembowski's 60 W inverter is more than enough to power it.

out of stock, you must have ordered the last one . I'd be interested to see how that adapter works out, but the power inverter I bought from Radio Shack was the same price, so...

Actually, I think JDeec is powering the MG-35, so the power requirements are slightly different.

JDeec, I'll let you know how I make out...

From the AL Tech website, the MG-35 uses DC 5V / 1.5A, 12V / 1.5A so 12V at 1.5A is only 18W.

quick question for you guys. Does the MG software allow for playlists that can be saved? I have a grip of mvs and don't want to sort by genre folder...I like ipod video playlist but hate to convert all my files to m4p format.

on the al tech unit(mg-35) you can create a playlist but it is deleted upon reboot of the device.

Confusing here,,,,

The website specs are definitely weird... How could it be both 5V and/or 12V - both mentioned as DC voltage??

I just took a look at the back of my MG-35 and power adapter and it does indeed use DC 5V and DC 12 V.

I'm taking a guess here, but when the MG-35 is connected to the computer via USB, it only requires 5V/1.5A, but when it operating as a media player, it requires 12V/1.5A.

Well, I got the car adapter for the HD-3510, and it works beautifully with the MG-35. Also, there was a huge difference in using a power inverter and the 110V power supply, versus the car adapter.

With the inverter, as I expected, there were wavy, rolling lines on the video output. With the car adapter, there are none of these wavy lines.

Inverters are notoriously known for creating "noise" in both audio and video devices, and this has been proven to me once again. The video interference with the use of an inverter is unacceptable (to me at least).

Very true. Didn't think about that.

It is only easier if you can find the laptop-like plug that fits into the MG-35. Then just create a power cable that taps into the car somewhere.

Keep in mind that in automobile applications, the 12V power leads usually deliver closer to 13.8V, so you need to be careful tapping directly into your car power leads to make some sort of home-made adapter with a 4-pin plug if you find just the plug somewhere on the net.

Also, during startup and cranking, the voltages can swing wildly if there is no voltage regulation device present between the car power and your electronics device. Most internal car electronics (like your car radio) have built-in power regulation to deal with the wide range of voltages.

Discussion About Car Voltage Spiking

I'll use a voltmeter on the output pins of the HD-3510 car adapter tonight to double check the voltage levels of the pins, but I'm gonna guess that the adapter is regulating the voltage to a more stable 12V.

Just be careful....Wouldn't want to see you fry your MG-35...

interesting. Well I finally put everything together(kind of a pain) and it works as expected. I just need to get a different switch and find a place to mount it. I may consider that HD-3510 car adapter so I can reduce some of the cable clutter under the passengers seat , mcowher how long is the cord?

It's a "coiled" type cord like most cell phone adapters, so coiled up, it's about 9-12"...

I'll measure the voltages on the adapter tonight (after I cut the grass... )

Measured the voltages on the pins of the HD-3510 Car Adapter tonight, and they are 12.6V and 5.6V...

Also, the cord is about 2-1/2 feet if layed out flat and straight.

Sorry for the noob comment, but the player has audio and video inputs....I know that the PIE X3 gives you the aux inputs for audio, where does the yellow video plug into?

you need a video converter, the most common on these boards is Dom's TVandNav2Go module, which plugs into the factory nav harness and gives you a video input.

Thanks datmrman.

I am a new owner of a 2006 TL. I'm anxious to get some mp3 in the thing, and might as well install the TVandNav module while i'm at it. I'm a novice with the TL, but I'm confident I can pull it off. Would you happen to know where I can get good information on how to take apart the TL correctly. I would be interested in something that shows how to take apart the trunk area to install teh Dom and the center console to extract the factory deck to inspect behind it. ^_^ Thanks.

FYI guys....I'm working on implementing a simple circuit that will turn the media player ON after it begins receiving power from it's power supply. That way, I don't have to worry about turning it on, and it'll be ready to go.

I'll be modeling it after one of the following two solutions, but I don't know which one yet:

Auto-On Switch Method 1

Auto-On Switch Method 2

interesting, but I don't turn on my media player everytime I drive, e.g. driving to work(6 miles) or running errands around town. Still seems like a good idea.

I think I would be more interested in an auto OFF for the media player. Once the player detects no power, it will safely turn off. That might be difficult though.

I apologize if this has already been mentioned, but can the video from an ipod be displayed on the nav screen with the use of dom's unit? With the current 80gb ipod going for $349, I might just bite and buy an ipod, something I promised I would never do.
