Multiple video sources?

Does anybody know how to rig multiple video sources into the Navi LCD? I want to be able to change between them with a switch...already have the rear camera/DVD feeding in, need to add 2 others.

Do I need a multiplexer of some sort?

check radio shack or wal mart for a video switcher, like you would use to hook a bunch of consoles and dvd / vcr up to you tv.

I found this at Radio Shack when I was preparing for my install:

2-Way Audio/Video Selector Switch $14.99

This is only 2 video/audio inputs, but you can find similar ones with more inputs at Radio Shack and most electronic stores.

Another alternative is a TV Tuner, which will allow you to watch over the air TV broadcasts in the car. I checked out vandido626's install at our local meet over the weekend and he told me his TV tuner lets him have 3 video inputs! I think I've read the TV tuner runs around $100.

AV Electronics unit: http://www.avelectronic.com/NavigationVid-Switcher.htm

It allows for 4 outputs, i believe. The remote control allows you to switch from one to the other.
I have the older unit installed in my car (bought used on the forum and installed this weekend.) It works really well. I only have 1 unit hooked up to it (Multi-Media player). I was considering the backup camera as well as a DVD player, but in the end, got lazy and didn't want to buy/install them. It also has a TV tuner (mine came with TV antennas) if you want to watch TV.

EDIT: Scratch that. Didn't see that you already have doms unit.

thanks for the feedback guys. Yeah i have the dom unit already. so whatever i get will need to work with that interface. There needs to be a way to control the switching of videos via an external switch too, similar to how you toggle dvd with a switch on the dom unit...

yarll, that looks like it might work if it accepts an external switch to toggle different videos

They come with wired remotes. Looks heavy duty.

A few models available from this online vendor.

On another note, have you contacted Dom about this leedogg? He might have something you can use.

Jensen switch

This is what I used: Jensen KSW41
It looks like pretty much the same thing, but it's only $30. The remotes even look like they came from the same manufacturer. It allows for 4 video connections, and they also make a bigger model with more inputs/outputs, but it sounds like this is the size you would want. Mine works fine. I have DCC's switch to change from Nav to DVD (input 1 on Dom's) and then a toggle switch to change to input 2 and from there it hits the Jensen and I just change between the different video connections (iPod, X-Box, unused, unused) on the Jensen controller in the picture on the link above.

Since you have a back up camera I would guess you would want this in between Dom's input 1 and all of your components & leave the 2nd input for the backup camera (I'm sure you already know this stuff though ).

That would be ideal Any2foru....but I need to use a switch other than that controller =(

I'm not sure what you mean here, but if you're thinking of connecting it the same way I am thinking, it would mean (using my setup as an example) that you would run the video 1 connection from Dom's unit to the Jensen output and then all of your video sources would connect to the Jensen inputs then when you clicked the toggle (DCC's switch in my setup) you would just have to use the Jensen video selector to switch between your input sources. In other words, yes (if you meant that as a question). That's the way I use it, except that I use it on Dom's video 2 input because I don't have the camera.

Am I missing something?

Any2forU,

I think he means he wants to use a toggle switch or push button to cycle his input selection. Kind of like the PIE X3 selector does. Push the button on the sleector until you get to the right source but without a bulky faceplate or remote. Thats just my guess but thats the way it sounds to me.

The switch (DCC's switch or other) would need to be able to toggle the source directly (dont want a video selector switch in between!) and it would need to be an overide video (similar to how kicking it into reverse engages the rear camera and overides everything on the navi screen)

I see. That exceeds my level of knowledge on this stuff. I never fully understood how that backup camera came on automatically in reverse either, but I never really looked into it since I wasn't planning on including one.

I'm sure you'll find something. Good luck.

I use a TV tuner, mine has 3 video sources and I toggle between them with the tuner remote. I'm sure there are others with more.

Basically what I was looking to do was see if it was possible to install 2 extra cameras on the insides of each side mirror, and when you activated your turn signal, it would display your blind spot on the screen.

Hows this idea sound?

this is what the 3G TL concept had and acura scraped it becuase it would be too confusing to look down at the navi screen and not through the window.

I think that's not a bad idea, but I think that it would be more useful in the situation where you're in reverse as opposed to when you're changing lanes. Like what "csmeance" said, it probably isn't a good idea to look at a nav screen while changing lanes. Conceptually, it's a good idea, and there is an application for it somewhere.
