MP3 CD burning mode: Mode 1 or 2?

I'm still trying to get an MP3 cd to play in my car. I've used Nero, but don't know if i should use Mode 1 or Mode 2 when burning. Please advise, thanks.

he's got an '07 TL...it plays mp3 cds...

burn with mode 1...it's more compatible with cd players where as mode 2 (aka XA) is not...there are actually two different mode 2's and are generally for extra stuff on a disc such as photos, video, etc...

mode 1: data, mp3...has good error correction coding...

mode 2-1: data...

mode 2-xa: vcd/svcd movie cd's...

have you tried burning in mode 2...? ...cd's are a dime a dozen, so wasting 2 or 3 isn't too big a deal...

do you have it set to burn Disc-At-Once (DAO) or Track-At-Once (TAO)? ...because you should be burning DAO...

I have been unable to make a working mp3 cd with Nero (7). Use Windows xp built in cd burning engine through explorer. That's how I've done it, well not on MY pc, a friends. I'll make a mp3 cd on MY pc (with nero installed) using windows explorer and see if that works (hopefully Nero didn't modify the built in XP burning engine or anything).

Update, the cd I created played fine using Windows explorer. I just dragged a few mp3 folders to the drive icon and then burned the files as a CD (not an audio disk). Works like a champ.

I have no idea what Nero is doing (or not doing) but the TL doesn't like it. My Alpine in the truck seems to play everything I throw at it.

windows' built-in burning feature doesn't make TRUE mp3 CDs...it will burn mp3's to a CD, but doesn't make the structure for a true mp3 CD...your alpine deck is aftermarket and probably reads many burned formats, including data CD's (mp3's just burned to a disc)...the stock TL system won't read these discs...

Nero and Roxio's programs, for example, will burn true mp3 CDs...if you want an extremely simple solution, get iTunes and burn an mp3 disc...i've done it numerous times and as you know, iTunes is free...just go into the settings/preferences of iTunes and choose the MP3 disc format under the 'burning' section...

What constitutes a MP3 disk and a pc "data" disk with mp3 "files" on it? Didn't know there was a MP3 standard disk format.

When burning with NERO I start a data disk project. Same as I would to burn files or pictures to.

A MP3 CD is basically a (PC) data disk with folders and MP3 files. I've never had a problem with creating them for my old portable MP3 CD player or Pioneer car deck. A majority of players will ignore what files it can't read, but its safer just to burn a data disk with folders and MP3 files.

I've never heard of an MP3 CD standard.

i can't find the image i once saw a few years ago...it had a tree structure of an mp3 cd...but like you said, the alpine plays it just fine and the TL doesn't...that's because there's a structure missing (i'm pretty sure of it)...

are the mp3's you burned thru windows explorer at the root of the disc (meaning not in a folder -- just located at D:\songs.mp3)? ...the structure isn't rocket science, but some players might require the songs to be in folders...

All songs are in folders according to albums. I think even once I tried with songs in the root then in folders.

I noticed on the cd I burned last night there were only 4 folders, at the root. The 1st folder actually showed up as folder 2 and that the cd had 5 folders according to the display (both on the navi screen and the upper display). I'm assuming that the ELS considers the root folder 1.

Anyway, as long as Windows Explorer burns a compatible disk, I'll just keep using that. Not enough to lose sleep over, just a curiosity as to what Nero is doing.. damn Germans. I bet they play in BMW's

Are you using Nero v6 or v7 ? I use version 6.6.1.4 and any MP3 discs I burn work fine in my '07. So far, I used the "Make MP3 CD" option for each burn. I have a feeling there's no difference bet. that and the regular "Make Data CD" option in Nero. They probably just made that redundancy to prevent some people from calling customer service when they didn't find the "MP3 CD option".

You're correct in assuming that the ELS considers the root folder 1, same thing happens on my system.

Weird. Nero is my burning software of choice. Never have had issues with it.

Using Nero Burning ROM (I never use Nero Express), select New Compilation > CD-ROM(ISO) > No Multisession > add files/folders > Write and Finalize Disk.

I looked last night, no mp3 cd option either! Or is that if you scroll way down on the left hand pane. I didn't look down there, just looked over the ISO options.

I'm using Nero 7. That's the only pc I have with 7 on it. I have 6 still on my theater and workbench pc's. I'll play around with them this weekend.

yeah, make sure there's no mp3 option in the left pane before continuing...

now if there's no mp3 cd option, look at the image below i found on the net...

those are the basic settings you want to use...notice how 'mode 1' is selected by default (which i asked loulax07 and he said there wasn't one )...

try that...

My head hurts and I give up!!

I just burned 8 cds this morning. 3 on my workbench pc using Nero 6, ignoring the mode 1 or 2 options I tried track at once, disk at once, and disk at once 96. All 3 cds played.

Hmmm, now on the workbench I have a tube of older blanks. Of course upstairs on my desktop pc I have two types of blanks (both of which I tried back in January with my desktop, nero7 and they failed).

I then though let's try the same thing on Nero 7 on my desktop pc with the workbench blanks. All 3 cd's played.

I then tried the same blanks I used in January and, shit, they played. Now I'm TOTALLY stumped!!

The only thing is maybe the amount of folders (and nested folders) but at this point I give up and am done! I don't burn that many mp3 disks as my entire cd/mp3 library is in my ipod which lives in the TL.

Glad Loulax07 that explorer worked for you. Seems now everything works for me.
