Looking for a cheap sub

I want a sub in my trunk. I don't want the best or the loudest, I just want something that is cheap and affordable and relatively plug and play. Any suggestions?

What are your goals and your price range?

If you want something extremely cheap that will sound better than many higher priced systems and you don't mind doing a little work instead of plug and play, look at a Pyle 15" sub in an infinite baffle setup. Supposedly sounds very good, goes plenty loud and low, and requires only about 150w max so you can save on amp costs. The sub is around $40 and the materials will be around $30. The downside is you have to fabricate a baffle to mount the sub and seal it off.

Otherwise, Dayton makes some great bang for the buck subs. Bigger is better most of the time unless space is an issue.

I'm compensating for other areas.

I just like larger subs, they offer many advantages whether it's SQ, SPL, or efficiency with the only disadvantage being the space they take up.

I'd look for an amp that takes speaker level in. Then you can just grab the sub wiring back there already for signal. You'll still have to run power, but that can't be helped. A sealed sub 10-12" is probably what you're looking for. Easiest install. Requires more power than IB, but a monoblock amp is cheap for alot of power if you only want a sub.

If you're considering replacing speakers in the future, recommendations change significantly.

Cheap Subs:
Dayton HO
SSA Dcon
Alpine Type-R
Sundown SA-8

Find a small 400-600 watt amp and you're golden. I'd suggest finding an amp that accepts a balanced input also as that will save you the hassle of buying another piece of the puzzle to remove noise

The Type-R is supposed to be a very good sub for the price. I read somewhere that it might use xbl2 technology but I've never confirmed it.

If he gets one that accepts high level inputs he won't have to worry about balanced or running wires on one side of the car.

I Hate Cars, thanks for the informative reply. Everyone else thanks as well. I am looking to spend $200 all together including installation. With the budget subs you guys listed does that sound good? $200 for everything?

I am completley new to audio...=/. I have never done any audio upgrades. Thats why my knowledge is nothing in the audio field.

Wow..$200 + installation. With that budget you need to be looking on your local Craigslist. Hate to say it but that won't buy you damn near anything worthwhile. I mean I would rather someone tell me that then buy something crappy and waste $200. Where are you located and I can help ya look at some Craigslist stuff

With that budget, you might be limited to the Pyle that I mentioned. Put it in a large sealed box or go IB and it will sound decent. From what I've read it actually sounds good if you give it a lot of air space (large box or IB) and don't run too much power to it. For $40 what do you have to lose... Build the box yourself, all you have to do is build a basic rectangle and cut a hole. Seal it up well. You want around 3 cubic feet of airspace.

The amp will probably have to be bought used. 300watts will be plenty for this sub. If you get a name brand amp, 300w will be fine. If you find some super cheap brand, you probably want something rated at 500w or above to get a real 300w.

You could install it yourself. It's just 4 wires. Ground, power, and a remote to turn the amp on and off. The signal wire can be pulled off of the stock sub wire with an LOC. $200 is REALLY pushing the limits of gear that will sound any better than stock.

What I would do is blow your whole budget on an average sub and box. You could even run it off the stock amp for now even though it probably won't sound much better. As you get more money, buy an amp. $200 is just so little for equipment plus install.

The lower level JL's do a great job I imagine and are pretty cheap through onlinecarstereo.com. They don't require that much power and can handle what you give them very nicely.

If the amplifier doesn't have speaker inputs then just buy a line/level convertor. PAC makes a nice one that I've used several times.

Agreed. Honestly, even the lower level JL's will still be JL quality. You really can't go wrong.
