Ka band radar in EZPass lanes
Driving on the Garden State Parkway (an NJ toll-road), my radar detector picked up Ka band radar going through 2 (but not every) toll plazas. Ka was detected at Asbury Park and Union tolls. I also went through Raritan, Exit 98 and Exit 114 - and didn't pick up Ka radar there. This was a really strong reading - like having the cop car 20 feet away from you. Are they finally fixin' to start ticketing for doing more than 15MPH through the toll plaza?

My detector goes crazy at all tolls with EZPass, including the ones you mentioned. Total list of tolls I go through on a semi-regular basis includes:
GSP Asbury, Raritan, Toms River, and Barnegat
NJTP Exit 7a & PA Ext.
PATP Assortment of exits I can't remember b/c I avoid them now.
Ben Franklin Br
Walt Whitman Br
All of these (including PA ones) set off my Ka alert to max in the Cash and Exact Change lanes (I don't have EZPass). I always assumed it was just how EZPass was reading the tags, but it would not surprise me if they were speed checking people. They have to since they put the EZPass lanes in the worst possible places on the GSP. ("I have an idea, let's put the EZPass lanes in the middle, so the people with EZPass can rearend the people who have to stop coming out the other side of the plazas.") But that's another discussion altogether.

I guess we are spoiled over here on the west. The few toll roads we have here have "fastrack" where we zip through doing 75-85 mph and it reads our tag. No slowing down no stoping it's great!!

I used to routinely go through the toll plazas in 3rd gear at about 25MPH, now I'll be doing it in 2nd (good excuse to practice toe/heel technique).

I'll tell you, a buddy of mine had his EZ-Pass confiscated for 60 days because he was speeding though one of the tolls upstate NY. He was mailed a warning letter, however a few weeks later his ezpass didn;t work. The cop came up to him and confiscated it - sucks, huh! He now goes the exact speed limit though all the lanes.

Especially a problem in Jersey where they decided to throw the damn EZ-Pass lanes wherever it was easiest to run the cables. A lot of accidents and some toll collectors getting hit.. it wouldn't surprise me if their setting speed traps in the lanes.

Interesting, I'm glad they haven't been doing it in the Boston region. My buddy constantly runs through the Fastlane booth at 40-50 MPH, and I usually do it in the low 30s, while accelerating as soon as I pass the mid point of the booth. I suspect they use radar for the camera feature, so they can adjust the timing of the photo to get a clear picture of the license plate. I've been mailed a few letters because I didn't register my rental as an authorized user of the FastLane tag, but other than that haven't got any speed warnings.
