Wow - 15mph, cop was an ass. I got pulled over last week, doing 70 in a 50 zone. So an unmarked car coming up fast, i kenw it was a cop and it was too late to move out of the way. Not to mention the 10 cars i nfront of me were doing 70 also (on the hutch, everyone does at least 60). It was my worst day ever - i was late for school (have to drive from yoinkers to bronx to take the subway, all the way downtown to 4th street NYU). I pulled over, gave cop my documents, and didnt complain about one thing. Lots of people end uo bitching, jsutm akes things worse. Didnt say a word and kept my cool, cop comes back and tells me hes giving me a warning for speeding (i know i deserved the ticket, even though others were going hte same speed as i, its still 20mpoh above the speed limit). He says he will elt me og on the speeding, but will ticket me for driving too close to the car i nfront of me. Hey, i rather get a ticket for that than speeding 20mph over(does "driving too closely" effect insurance) the limit. Feel bad for you, i always thought 5-15mph max was a safe zone, guess not, and guess it all has to do with whose your cop. Too bad i didnt have my fathers PBA card from the former police commissioner Bill Braton, i mist liekly wouldve got a not saying "have a nice day," at least thats what they did to my father.

15 mph over is ok? I doubt it......the cops I know always said "9 is fine...10 you're mine" (though I know I've gone by speed traps at 10 over and the cop didn't even look up)!

You also have to realize not all cops have RADAR on all the time, if they think you're going too fast, they can pace you then pop the radar. So, even with a radar detector, you should look around before you decide to go significantly faster than the flow of traffic :P

Then there's the issue of LASER. The escort does have a laser detector, but typically, by the time it picks it up, you're pretty much done for.

most car's speedometer are about 2-3mph faster than actual speed... i guess that's another reason why 10 is usually okay.

yeah dude, just be careful.....even with my valentine one, i never go over 80 in a 65.....i just don't have the patience to deal with cops anymore.......

I recommend the V1. Have had the V1 for 5 years and recently sent it in for an upgrade. Bought and 8500 X50 to try out and sold it two months later...I think the direction indicator is more important than a little extra range of the 8500....I see no difference in 100 feet when your two miles away...that's opinion...but you will not go wrong with either....

For a little added insurance you could add a laser jammer (100% legal in most states) for $300 - 500 more. The laser feature on a regular detector is worthless if you ask me, if it goes off...consider it the sign to pull over. I was drvinig today and my laser jammer when off but my V1 did not, this really convinced me that the jammer is worth it since most police officers are trained to aim at the headlight or front tag. Most winsdhield detectors won't even register at moderate distances due to the narrow beam of the laser.

I agree with longdrive on the laser jammer - I installed the Escort Passport ZR3 ($330 or something like that). It has gone off a couple times with a cops laser gun. Scared the hell out of me - but apparently works.

Valentine 1. Period.

It's saved my butt so many times that I can't live without it. And the arrows are so helpful. Ask anyone with a V1 if they would ever give up the arrows. Everyone would tell you no.

just a suggestion...I had my 8500 hardwired so the cord runs under the dash, up the front pillar underneath the airbag and then under the headliner...it comes out just to the left of the rear view mirror...

the detector itself sit under the tint brow so it is not readily visible from the outside...

just one extra thing to do not to attract potential thieves to your vehicle...if they can see the cord, they will probably take a second look to see if it worth stealing...

I seemed pretty convinced that V1 is the way to go, and their website says they protect against laser, which is my biggest concern since all my tickets have come from lidar.

So is V1 the way to go against laser or should I get laser jammer?

the V1 will alert you once you have been hit with laser by a cops laser gun. it will NOT block the laser. once you are hit with the laser - it is simply too late. they already have your speed.

i have a combination of the V1 and a laser jammer (Escort Passport ZR3)...and i think they work excellent together. check my signature for links to the zr3 and the v1 installations.

I would get both....there are still plenty of Radar threats out there that you can get into trouble with. In MD they still using rolling radar like crazy...

I have the Passport ZR3 jammer that has proven itself.....there are others that work well to like the Blinder or Bel....I am not sure that I would consider any others. I personally liked the ZR3 the best. Both the Passport and the Bel have both front and rear protection....But if you have a large truck you may want to consider the blinder since you can have up to for sensors for the front cover the large area....smaller cars can get away with two or even on sensor placed near the front license plate

most reputable sites that specialize in radar detectors have done comparisons on Val 1, Bel rx65 and Escort 8500. The Bel RX65 and Escort 8500 are at the top. Val 1 is outdated.

Has anyone noticed that most independant radar test are performed by organizations that sell radar detectors.....Since Valentine sells directly to consumers only...........giving the V1 top dog would mean less sales for them....

V1 outdated??? Hardly.... Rumor has it the when testing POP performance in one independant test, an older V1 (no POP) was used instead of the new V1 (POP capable and available at the time) against the 8500 X50....not fair huh??? Unfortunatley I am not at liberty to say which test.....

I think test reports are somewhat reliable and good for general research....but I strongly recommend you buy at least two of them and try them out.....just about everyone gives you a 30 guarantee...

I had both....and sold the "less expensive one - 8500 X50 - supposedly the world's best" and kept the V1 .

Personally, I do not think anyone is worthy of that claim....it all comes down to preference and which one has the feature you think are best for you....

as many have said.....

According to them all three detectors are great.
I just purchased my V1 and received it yesterday. Works great and I think I will keep it, even after my 30 day trial. My dad has the Escort X50 and loves it. Just wish they would make the V1 in blue.

I just read acurakids info about laser jammers... and I know they arne't legal here in utah, and I wanna know if they are legal in most places. having a laser detector is useless, the only time i have had mine go off i got a ticket... cuz its too late.

Ok here is my law question for you lawyer TL owners...
I read on utah.gov website that operaing a laser jammer is a misdemenor class C and want to know this: If it will go on my points for driving. A speeding ticket is a class C i think and so If i would get a class C for using it, and a class C for speeding, the obvious choice would be to use it and so if I dont get points on my licnese then on insurance hike or no chance of taking away my license for using it.

You guys get what im askin here? I guess im just asking if using a laser jammer would be a moving voilation and add points to my record.

elevate - I can't tell you about your local laws - but i know they are legal in most places - infact my understanding was that D.C. is one of the few places that they are banned....

For those who do get a ticket. Here is a technique that someone in the payment system said. When you receive the ticket over pay it by at least $2. The system will send you a refund check. Don’t cash it check, this will prevent the system from taking your points. They system only takes the point when the transitions are complete. You will not get hit on not paying the speeding ticket if you get another ticket. A couple of my buddies tried it and their points are “safe”.

I think you're much better off just getting a lawyer and getting the ticket "fixed". When I got a speeding ticket here in Missouri last year, I used the site MissouriTrafficTickets.com (which is a division of USTrafficTickets.com for those in other states) and they got my speeding ticket (50 in a 35) knocked down to a defective equipment non-moving violation, the ticket cost me $170 instead of $105 and I think my attorney fees were like $75 and I was just able to pay by credit card (you pay the lawyer and they pay the fine). Needless to say, the extra $140 I thought was well worth it to not have to worry about the points or my insurance going up. Oh, and for me at least the whole process took all of a week (they said it could take much longer, so that was a bit of a pleasant surprise).

No I just really want to know if in utah, where laser and radar jammers are illegal, if using them and getting caught is a moving violation. If not I'd use them day in and day out and get tickets for them instead of speeding, which would affect my insurance.

Oh and today, i got a ticket. Going to work. 79 in a 65. I was following traffic. He said that I "deserved it cause when i passed him i slowed down, then when he got going and saw me again i was going the same speed again" retarded cuz I didn't even pay attention and was not even in a mode where i was looking for cops cuz i thought I was fine. Probably, if i did, slow down when I passe dhim, it was cuz the cars in front of me did.

The stupidest part was he was like 'i'd reduce it to 75 but you'd be in the same bracket and pay just as much, so its pointless" well DUH, then reudce it to 74. moron.

I was pretty pissed. I am giong to try that technique of sending in a ticket thats 5 dollars or so over though

It's not too late when you're about to hit a speed trap and their using laser on the cars ahead of you and your radar detector picks that up. That's the whole point to pick it up while they're hitting cars in front of you. This has happened a few times to me where the laser chirp would go on...and I would slow down only to see the cop down the road shooting people.

That's what I'm saying, I didn't do anything except tell the lawyer about my ticket (all online, I never talked to anyone, just input my information and paid by credit card on their website!), there are lawyers who specialize in this stuff, just look in your phone book. Basically the lawyer just calls the DA and basically it's a plea bargain, you agree to the lower crime with the higher fine and everyone is happy, the authorities get what they really want, money (you think this has anything to do with safety?) and you get a ticket that doesn't affect your insurance or driving record (I got pulled over like 8 months later for something else, and the cop even commented how I had such a good driving record ).

Just to be clear, no, I did not have defective equipment, that's just the non-moving violation they use here to "fix" tickets in this manner, I'm sure many places do that.
