JL Audio W3 vs. W7

I agree 100%
According to JL the W7 will need 500 watts of power to get that baby to sing
The W3 can run on 250 watts
I have listened to both and the W7 blows away the W3

Are we talking SQ or SPL?
The W7 blows it away in SPL hands down, they should not even be mentioned in the same sentence.
This is just my opinion but the W3 can compete in SQ against the W7 but it lacks the low end.
My friend has 2 12" W3s and they don't come close to my 2 12" W6s in either category.

Not really sure. I don't normally blast the music but when I do, I want a nice clean sound. My taste in music is pretty open with the exception of Jazz and Country. I was thinking of the following set-up:
- a single JL Audio 10w3 powered by their Slash 500/1 (or 250/1)
- C5-525 component in front and C5-525x coax in rear powered by their 300/1 amp. (CSW stated that the 6.5" should fit and if so, i will go with the 6.5")
I called another shop and they were actually talking up the Alpine Type R over the JL Audio. They were saying the Type R were just as good for much less. Any suggestions on the original set up or the alpines???

I agree with CWSBiggs though. It real comes down to the box and the install. A good install with make marginal components sound their best but a bad install will make very good components sound very bad.
Yes, the 6.5's will fit.
I heard good things about the Alpine SPX-17Pro components too.

^^ Another reason for I looking at the W3 instead of the W7 is space. I want to lose as little space in the trunk as possible and those W7's are HUGE! I'll have to look into the W6 as a possibility.
It's all going to come down to price in the end...i'd like to keep it at or below $3k.

Ok...here's the deal.
I was originally thinking of an all JL Audio set up with the following:
- a single 10W3 powered by Slash series 500/1 amp
- C5-650 seperates in front and c5-650x coax in rear powered by Slash 300/4
Cost of the equipment alone will be about $2,400.
After speaking with another shop that favored Alpine, I put together the following:
- TypeR 10 sub
- TypeR 6.5 components in front and coax in rear
Amp will either be (1) PDX-5 powering everything (300w to sub and 75w to each of the four speakers) or (2) MRP-M500 powering sub and MRP-F300 powering speakers
Cost with the PDX amp would be $1,200 and with the MRP amps $1,000.
My thoughts are the TypeR set up will be a huge improvement over stock. I just want a nice clean sounding system and I'll probably be more than happy with the Alpine set up. I'm assuming the JL set up will sound better but is it worth twice as much?
How much should the install cost. Not looking for show...want a stealth look. custom box for the sub so i can access my spare. maybe mount the amps under the front seat if there's space.
Any and all comments are appreciated! Thanks!

Amps...I do not rec mounting amps under seat...
JL Audio 900/5 is an exact combo of both of those amps but in a smaller more energy effecient package...
or
Alpine PDX 5 - very afforadable and great power house...however...low frequency is lacking...
Speakers...
C5's sound great...
Type R's are very loud and do have a very a more pronounced high frequency...
Subs....
JL is the only option....10w/7 in a Uncald4 enclosure is a simply amazing combo for most people...does allow access to your spare tire...fairly cost effective...talk to him...i'm sure he'd be glad to hook u up...
you forgot to mention your musical taste and desired listening levels...

Thanks for the feedback Jason. I really like the JL Audio set up...thanks for the heads up on the JL amp...will be able to save some money. My musical taste varies. I pretty much listen to anything except jazz and country. Listening levels varies too. Most of the time its at a low/reasonable volume but I do get the urge to blast it now and then.

^^^ suggestions (from anyone)? Let's say budget is $2,000.
I like the C5's because the highs are not TOO high. I heard that the alpine speakers are a little on the high side. Kind of like MB Quarts...when i listened to those years back, the highs were just painful! I'm just looking for a nice clean "warm" sound. (Not really sure if that's how you describe it but hopefully you get the idea.)

I know biggs is gonna come for my neck, but for the sub i'd go for a sealed 12" ssa xcon
no, those components do not come with rear coaxils..morel tempo 6c would suit well for rear duty

Quite honestly, if you want rear fill, I would install the front components and amp them and the stock rear speakers. I have a feeling once you amp the stock rears you won't want to spend the money to upgrade them. The difference is night and day.

In my wrx I had two 12"w3 and they were a good system. My first system in the TL was 2 10" w6 and they were louder, I just heard a TL with a w7 12" and it feels like someone is banging your seat and its ran on a 500/1 JL amp with proper wires, yes the w7 needs 4 guage? thicker wire for it to run proper wire when my others needed 8guage. Its a powerful system and i built the box myself for 35 bucks, carpeted and everything. Bought the sub alone for 429.00. I love it becuase on low volumes it hits nice, hard and not loud and just right.

My opinion has drastically changed since '09 when this thread was last active. After hearing many more W series subs, and after being better educated I realize the W7 is JLs top SQ sub that will get much louder than their other subs and just about every other SQ sub out there.
