iPOD integration in BMW

I don't own an iPOD, but I thought those who do might be interested in this.

It is definitely cool....and an opportunity Acura should have addressed with the TL instead of including the cassette deck. What an addition that would have been!

Let's be optimistic. The device will fit in 2002+ BMWs. Therefore, it's conceivable that Apple & Acura could team up in the future and the resulting product work on all 3rd Gen TLs. Write Apple and Acura!

well no it all depends on the wireing... 2002 and later models had an unused AUX input and as we know, to use our aux input, we would have to unplug the XM so I dont know if Acura would still market it with that in mind

I'll bet this uses the BMW CD-changer wiring in the head unit, so you'll have to choose between ipod and CD-changer, but can't have both.

Still, this is one major change I'm waiting for in the TL. Shouldn't be too difficulty and the display on the NAV would be much better than BMW's red lighting displays.

your bet would be right, i just went to bmw's website and they said that if you still wanted to use the changer, just unplug the ipod and plug in the changer... although it cant be equiped oon rides with navi or satelite radio... it makes sense on why it isnt availible on the 5 series and 7 series, because of i-drive...

You'd think this would be an easy connection in the TL with some sort of switch where the cable for the ipod is stored (center console or glove compartment) or possibly a software switch in the Navi to temporarily use the ipod and disable XM or vice versa. After all, you can't listen to both at the same time.

If you go to www.bmwtips.com, and then tips and tricks, then look under the stereo section, then look at MP3 / Aux input, you will see what someone did on a 5 series to make the i-pod work. I believe it involved splicing wires with the tape deck wires or just the speaker wires, I am not sure.

the thing can use only 5 playlists, so you can't navigate the ipod through the categories anyways. its not completely seemless integration if you ask me. the best solution would be one that you can navigate using your stereo the categories within the ipod and display ID3 tags.

- The 3er uses a different wiring harness with the Navi - less than 5% have Navi.

- The radio with cassette is an old design and hasn't been available for two years.

- Sirius and the CD-Changer use the aux output - there's an A/B switch for the changer when using the iPod.

- It's available now.
