iPhone enabled Viper SmartStart Remote Start

I wanted to let you guys know I got the Viper SmartStart installed a couple of days ago in my TL. If you haven't heard of it yet it is basically a Viper 5101 with a gsm module. You can Lock/Unlock/Panic/Start your car from an iPhone app. It seems to work well so far and as you can imagine using the gsm phone network you have basically unlimited range.

If you want to see more info. on the system the website is:

www.viper.com/smartstart

If it helps I have a 2004 Auto with Navigation

ok so lets say you lose your phone and you can't get another iPhone or iTouch, can you use any other remote to start the car or lock and unlock it?

sounds cool, but just like how people crack and hack into phones i wonder if hackers will be doing this to break into and steal people cars but cloning the sim card etc...

Can you imagine someone finding a phone you lost and playing with the remote start? There must be a way to disable it as well.

I've been following this for a long time. I can't stand how the range is so limited, especially working in a hospital, its so nice to just be able to start the car from the floor 15 mts before you leave when the car is parked like 3 blocks away.

I'm gonna get this in a few weeks. I already have the clifford matrix 3.5 but I'm going to just upgrade the unit.

To answer a few questions from this thread, this system comes with a backup one-way remote if you don't have your iPhone. The upcoming app version 2 will have password protection for the app. It doesn't replace the factory alarm, if your installer used the correct interface it will actually work with your factory alarm. It is a remote start only, no aftermarket alarm.

so with this being said, we still can use our original factory remote to open the door/lock the doors right? This is what i am worrying about - sometime i let my brother drive my car and it'll be suck if he cant get in with the factory remote.

They really need to make an app for blackberry phones. It wouldn't take much and would really open up their market to people who aren't with AT&T.

Cool stuff. i do have an iphone, however it's an unlock version because i didn't want to pay for the data plan. Is the data plan require for this to work? how exactly does the iphone transfer the signal to the SS module?

That is freakin awesome. Every smart phone should be capable of this. The Iphone and my Hero Google both use Android and basically the same apps. They better make one soon.

Rodney this can be done via the lcd remote. This was a little project that i been working on since the viper 5101 has 4 aux channels only allowing either up or down. But i been trying to figure out how i could add in a control module to allow up to 8 aux so this could be done all via the remote. But this application looks more promising as long as you can control 8 aux its good to go.

Will SmartStart work if I’m too far away from my vehicle?
With SmartStart, there is no such thing as "too far away." SmartStart works over the 3G cellular network or over Wi-Fi, giving you virtually unlimited range anywhere in the U.S. As long as your vehicle is in range of a GSM cellular signal and your phone has a 3G or Wi-Fi signal, SmartStart will work.

How much does the SmartStart service cost?
The first year of service is included! After that, the annual fee is only $29.99/year. That’s only $2.50 per month!

All the questions most of you will probably have. http://www.viper.com/smartstart/FAQ.aspx

I just talked to a technical representative at Directed and he said the app for the Blackberry is currently under development for the smart start. He said plan to see it in early 2010. Hope this helps answer the question some of you guys were wondering. I know I am anxious for it's release as well.

Few questions

1. Does the install require that you give up your valet key for remote starting or not? Because, typically for remote starting you would use a PK or XK override modules for the starter / ignition, if you do not want to loose the valet key.

2. The 'unlimited' usage is actually limited to fair use as per the documentation. Viper does not define fair use. However, they do mention that if your usage is excessive then you will have to move up to a higher plan compared to the $29.99 annually. I am concerned about what is considered 'fair use'. If I use the remote start 5-10 times a day, is that fair or excessive? Does anyone have any details?

3. Does the install provide a manual override button / valet feature to disable the remote starting system? This is very important while valet parking or servicing your car.

If anyone has answers' to these, I would love to know.

My BestBuy quoted me $499 for basic install + $350 in additional parts and labor. These bozos could not qualify what's involved in additional parts and labor. Based on my experience and research, I am sure you will need the following;

1. PKH34 engine immobilizer data override module

http://www.bypasskit.com/product.aspx?prodid=PKH34

2. HODL or XK01 door lock/unlock, trunk, OEM security, panic alarm data override module.

http://www.bypasskit.com/product.aspx?prodid=HODL

or

http://www.bypasskit.com/product.aspx?prodid=XK01

Anyone has any experience with either of these? I have heard some complaints that with the XK01 / HODL modules, the window roll-down feature using the OEM key fob is disabled. Does anyone have any visibility into this issue. Also, I have found that Best Buy auto techs have been inconsistent with their quotes in different places.

It would be nice if you could share information about your quote/install.

Alternatives to Viper's SmartStart

If Best Buy rates are to be accepted, I have calculated that the remote start will cost just under $1000 over next 5 years of ownership.

I was wondering if there are any competing alternatives to the SmartStart - some other system which will give you remotes start over a long range with 2 way communication. Any suggestions ?

Called the other day and a Blackberry app is scheduled for release at the end of February.

The only alternative I know of is the Audiovox Prestige ASCL100 1 Way Telematics Car Link which is an add-on for select Audiovox remote start systems. I believe it to be text-msg based.

Did they say anything about a Droid app?

Also, if you want to go the DIY route:
There is an interesting thread over at the12volt.com:
Remote start via disposable cell phone?

Here's the link to his blog with the finished, working project (3 parts):

I find it funny that they use that car in San Diego to demonstrate in this videos yet in another video I watched with same car in the same driveway, it was in Las Vegas.

I tried to get info on Droid but it's almost impossible to get them on the phone. Feel free to try though: 800-753-0600.

Hopefully they are because I re-upped my Sprint contract in October so I can't drop them for ATT. And all the Blackberrys Sprint carry trackball scrolling. Only Verizon carries the Storm touchscreen. I've been using touchscreens for 3 years now. I refuse to go back. My wife has the Curve and the functionality of the trackball sux.

Anybody have this system having trouble with it currently?

How about using it with a jailbroken Iphone... still on the AT&T network-- legit contract etc... just jailbroken.

Mine worked for a few days after I got it just fine.... and ever since then i try to send a command to the car with the phone and it says 'encountered an error trying to send signal to car' or something along those lines.

Only had the system about 2 weeks now, took it to the shop today to see if they could trouble shoot it, and they're having the same problem with a their 'test phone' and---

so wondered if there is currently network problems or something?

They can't do it by just "messing" with the phone. A passcode has to be entered within the app before you can access the commands. It's unclear to me if the passcode is an option or if it is hard coded.

from what I remember the passcode is an option.

Also for the trunk u can't just hit the button, i believe if you hit the button it asks you if your'e sure you want to open the trunk.

at the end of the day if the only negative to this thing is what to do if someone messes with ur phone, i think theres a fairly simple solution... dont let anyone mess with your phone

Also if you live anyplace that gets crap for signal with AT&T, don't waste your money. I've installed a few of them for customers with iPhones and it is nothing but a headache in this area. Customers that use their Blackberry on Verizon do not have any problems, works great. If you still want to get one and your data connection on your iPhone is slow I suggest you keep a spare remote in the car or on you as a backup to disarm the system (if you don't know the valet disarm sequence).

Had it installed in my 08 TL over the weekend. Came in from out of town last night and picked it up. The provided remote works but I can't get the app to work nor could the dealer. Tried it from an iPhone 4, 3, 1st gen and even an iPad. Tried from a full signal area and low signal area. No joy. Any suggestions? The installer is supposed to call Viper today but I have not heard anything.
