Bought a Passport 8500 X50 radar detector and the owners manual cautions:
"A few vehicles (including some Porsches) have windshields with a soft anti-lacerative coating on the inside surface. Use of suction cups will permanently mar this coating. Consult your dealership or the vehicle owner's manual to determine if your windshield has this coating."
Well haven't cracked open the owner's manual yet for this, but thought I could get a quick answer here.

Not sure what special coating 04TL has on their inside windshield, but its acoustic layer and windshield itself seem not to interfere Passport 8500 so far... I heard some ppl do use them.

 

I have a passport 8500 stuck to my TL windshield right now. No issues.

The coating they are reffering to is a metalized one. The TL doesn't have it.

 

Actually, it is not a metalized coating they are referring to. An anti-lacerative coating is a soft coating designed to avoid sharp piece of glass from coming in contact with passenger in an accident. It helps avoid cuts, or lacerations, hence the name. Because the coating is somewhat soft, the suction cup could mark it permanently. This has nothing to do with the perfomance of the detector, it's damaging the windshiled that ArcticFormula is worried about. I don't think the TL has this coating, but I'm not sure how to tell for sure. I'm guessing if it did, they would sell it up in the safety section of the website and brochure.

Actually you can also hardwire it and get the visor clip for the passport. It just hooks to the front of the visor. Works well and I have on my current car(not a tl). The only thing is I have to tilt my visor so it parrallel to the road surface so the detector is pointing in the right direction.

FWIW ArcticFormula, I cleaned off the area on the 04TL windshield where I used to mount my Solo S2, and the suction cup marks cleaned off just fine.

L454 - The visor clip doesn't work in the 04TL, at least I haven't found a way for it to work yet.

The visor clip height is way too narrow, and I can't get it over the 04TL's visor. In addition, the button on the X50 that holds the clip in place is exactly where the visor presses against, so the visor clip is always loose, and the Passport falls out.

If you have found a way for the visor clip to work, I would be very interested!

 

No, haven't actually tried it on a tl yet. And your setup is already just as good. Can't be having the police easily seeing that you have a detector.

 

żGotJazz?, so how do you like the X50? I'm thinking about getting one to replace my S2.
