i-mate JAM 900 - Pocket PC PDA phone (56K warning)

I got my new i-mate JAM 900 yesterday. It's a really sweet phone. It runs Windows Pocket PC 2003 Second Edition. It works perfectly well with the Acura TL, except that it doesn't display signal strength and battery life. Everything else works as expected. I got it from expansys USA through ebay for $535 including overnight shipping (open box). Most online retailers have it for $600-$650. If you're looking at getting one these, you should consider this retailer, he has a good reputation on Howard Forums.

Here are two pictures of it next to my P910 and N-gage QD. As of this writing, it is the smallest Pocket PC phone you can get your hands on. As you can see it is slightly smaller than the P910 and N-Gage QD. It uses an ARM 416MHz Intel processor, supports SD/SDIO (for WiFi and GPS) and MCC cards, has 64 MB ROM and 64MB RAM. If you're shopping around for a good PDA phone that works with your TL, and you want one now, then you should definitely consider the JAM.

The screen of the JAM in the previous pictures looks deceptively washed out due to the angle and exposure of the photo. Here's a better picture.

p910a

hey i have the p910a and i think it's great besides the bluetooth. The bluetooth works fine sometimes, but i can't call out from my car and the car doesn't pickup the phone automatically. My old T616 phone worked perfectly with my car, but it seems like that phone was the only sony ericsson that is fully compatible with my TL, it really sucks that their flagship phone is not the same way. I like the features on the p910a since I always had a sony ericsson phone. But how is the i-mate? features? bluetooth? i never heard of the brand and i never used a pocket pc.

I'm really getting to love the i-mate. The only drawback I can see with this phone is the lack of a keypad. But I think all its advantages (size, power, etc) and features compensate for this. I'm at work right now, I'll write a more thorough review later at night. Until then, you can probably check out these reviews:

To add on to what I said before, i think the i-mate is ugly. I removed the keypad and just use on-screen keypad and the p910 is much better, plus the screen is bigger. I would think the only drawback with the p910 compared to the i-mate is the camera.

It's actually not as ugly as it looks in a photo. You have to actually see one to appreciate its looks. Anyway, the i-mate's onscreen keyboard is more feature rich than the P910's. The i-mate also has better character recognition modes including continuous cursive recognition, which is really cool. The P910's screen is 320x208, whereas the i-mate's is 320x240, so the JAM's resolution is higher. The P910's screen is longer than the i-mate's, however not wider. The i-mate's camera is a piece of crap BTW, its quality is terrible, even though its rated 1.3M.

Very nice post, great detail and photos.

It's tough to see how big the phone is though...does it fit in your front pocket nicely? Do you use anything to protect the screen? What carriers are compatible with it? Thanks.

Yes it does. It is not as light as a T610/T616 though. It weighs about 150g. This site has a picture of a guy holding it in his hand, so you can see how small it is.

I've ordered a Martin Fields screen protector, haven't received it yet. It's the same brand I was using on my P910, works really good, can't tell the difference.

What carriers are compatible with it? Thanks.
The JAM 850, which supports the 850/1800/1900 MHz bands, works with T-Mobile and Cingular perfectly well. It doesn't work in some other parts of the world where they use the 900MHz band though. The JAM 900, on the other hand, will work all over the world but not with some places where Cingular uses only the 850MHz. It works with T-Mobile because T-Mobile uses the 1900 band.
