Here's How to Get XM NavTraffic in Your TL
Unfortunately, it involves replacing the stock stereo with this new Pioneer head unit:
Pioneer In-Car System Features XM NavTraffic
Navigation Unit Displays Traffic Conditions, Road Flow
XM Satellite Radio and Pioneer Electronics unveiled the next
generation AVIC-N2 multi-function navigation system and XM
NavTraffic.
Pioneer's system features an in-car navigation system that
offers satellite-based traffic information using XM NavTraffic,
which displays traffic incidents and road flow conditions on a
motorized 6.5-inch touch screen monitor. With a touch of the
screen, the Pioneer AVIC-N2 displays a detailed traffic events
list, showing local road incidents sorted by traffic event or
by distance. The traffic list describes the exact location of
incidents, provides descriptions of each occurrence and shows
the distance of the events from the vehicle's current location.
The Pioneer GEX-P10XMT (sold separately) data and audio
receiver, AVIC-N2's optional traffic tuner, offers both the
XM NavTraffic service and XM Satellite Radio's programming.
The subscription price is expected to be $13.99 a month for a
bundled offering of XM NavTraffic and XM Radio.
Pricing and availability will be announced at the Consumer
Electronics Show in January. For more information on XM,
visit http://www.xmradio.com.

i dunno if that is the only way, alpine makes the navigation for our cars and i am pretty sure for the new RL as well. if we were able to install whatever firmware that is running on the RL navigation on our cars it might work. i dunno exactly how complex it is to integrate as acura or alpine will probably not release any details between our two navs. if acura was smart they would get an update for the TL's(or any other honda with XM) so that they can sell it to all those thousands of TL customers that want it. not to mention XM's benefit from all the extra subscribers that they can rope in. i am pretty sure the development effort is not that hard on their(alpine) part.

I suspect that if "XM NavTraffic" was reasonably easy to add for the '05 TL, they would have have done so. The '05 RL's NAV/Audio system is probably a complete re-work from the '04 RL. Anyone know for sure?
I am guessing that too much re-engineering was required between the TL's NAV system and the Panasonic XM receiver interface without making a commitment to a complete re-design.

My question is, how well does it really work? Basically, how granular is the traffic reporting? If all you're getting is expressway data it's pretty worthless.
As an example, here in Chicago, if I'm travelling within the city expressway travel might not even be part of the mix. But every half mile is a main street that I can choose to travel on. If it had traffic date for every main street I could see where this would be really useful, at least to me. But I just can't imagine that this amount of data is available.
And it's even more worthless if the system sees an expressway is congested and it decides to route you on surface streets without knowing those surface streets don't also have tons of traffic. This is very typical during rush hour in an urban area. The expressway might only be travelling at 15MPH, but it's still faster than surface streets.
I was really tempted to wait another year to buy my TL thinking they'd implement this next year. But after thinking about it, I just think it's a feature that sounds better in theory than in practice.
So how about some real world experiences.
