Help with new speakers please

I am replacing front and rear speakers/tweeters on my 2004 TL. The center channel and subwoofer remain untouched. The shop I went to suggested Eclipse SC6500 for both front and back. Price, including installation, is $900 ($500 for the speakers themselves and $400 for labor). I am a novice at this but it seems high. Does anybody have any opinions on price and the speakers? Thanks.

i am not going to say anything about speaker prices but i know that $400 is way too much for an install. You can do the whole install yourself and save a lot of money.

Also before the mods say it, this should be posted in the audio sub forum.

Those speakers are average to be honest..this would be a nice set up..

I'm looking to replace the speakers as well. The price you quoted is way too high. Circuit City or Best Buy could do it for a lot less. Or you could install them yourself. It's not hard. It's very easy if you're not installing an amp. As for the speakers you may want to look at JL, Diamond Audio, Infinity or Polk's db series to name a few. Components for the front would be about $200, coaxials for the rear should be about $100-125. Try a few online stores like www.sonicelectronix.com, www.onlinecarstereo.com, crutchfield.com and many others. (Sonicelectronics shows the eclipse SC6500's for $129.99, way less than your quote for them.

I'd also suggest considering replacing the stock sub with something like the JL 8w3v3 (about $150) while the car is apart. Much better bass and if you decide to add an amp to the sub later you shouldn't have to take the rear seats and package shelf out. You should be able to do the wiring from below. (I haven't looked at the sub yet - somebody who knows if this is the case please jump in here). This is what I'm considering.

You should be able to get all of this done for less than $900

I found your Eclipse SC6500 component speakers at $125 for a set. With two sets you are looking at $250. I wouldn't know what to recommend for speakers since everybody has different tastes, but I went with 6.5" components for the front and rear. There is a lot of posts in this forum that gives you more than enough information to perform the install yourself. I wouldn't pay anybody $400 just for that. I must admit, the rear speaker install was a pain in the ass. Perhaps you could do the two front speakers, which is easier, and take it to somebody else for the rear if you are hesitant. I agree with Special FX, you definitely want to figure out what you are going to do with that stock sub while you have the car apart. You don't want to take that rear seat out again.

woaaaa. thats way too much for both. the best speakers ive heard are the diamond S600. those are top quality and much better than the eclipses. and they run for 200 a set on ebay. i have those installed (check my sig). but you dont have to go all out. theres real good speakers at a cheaper price. i just like diamond so...

diamond hexes:

oh and, i wouldnt recommend going back to the same shop cuz they seem like a complete ripoff. just speaker installation shouldnt cost more than 100-200 dollars max.

I've never had them install anything in may car either. But I have heard and read here that they do a decent job. If the OP is uncomfortable doing it himself it was a suggestion. I recommend DIY.

Thank you for all of your help. I'm definitely going to cancel my appointment and do it myself.
