HELP! Which iPod setup???
Hi All,
I know this has probably been asked a million times, but I couldn't find a thread that brought it all together.
Situation - I have received an iPod Touch as a gift for my birthday. I'd like to integrate it into the TL. I have a 2006 TL with Navi. I do NOT have XM and as a result have no SAT or XM button. There is no Aux in on the car (that I can see anyways, unless I'm missing something).
I've seen a bunch of different integration kits out there, but if I could get opinions on the best for my situation that would be great!!
I'd be awesome to have it all on screen, but I don't think that's possible without having the XM/SAT button, right?
Help!!
Thanks,
Deep

Are you in Canada?
If I'm not mistaken, although the car is not equipped with XM, there is still a connection in the back of the radio. You can still connect an iPod integration harness to the back of the radio.
The iSimple from Peripheral Electronics does a great job of integrating iPods to our stereo systems. It allows for radio and steering wheel controls to operate your iPod.
This seems to be the most popular solution, and is what I bought as well. Check this thread for a Group Buy.

Hi Trew - Yes, I'm in Canada.
From what I've read on crutchfield for example, if you have Nav, the iSimple doesn't work. It says not compatible with your car (I guess cuz of the Navi?)
Also - it will not charge the Touch 2nd gen (which I have)
I'll check out that link however!

Trust me, it will work with NAVI even though it says it won't. Ask anyone here with NAVI and an iSimple and they will tell you.
Ok - good to know.
How was the install? How long did it take you? connect from behind the radio?
Also - Do you need to remove power to the radio while doing this? I don't have the radio code, so might be an issue if you do...

It wasn't bad. Took me maybe 30 minutes with help.
You'll have to remove the driver side trim piece and knee panel, which will require removal of the lower dash cover on the driver's side. Doing this will make things much easier for you - the trim piece pops right off and there are about 6 screws to remove to get the panels off.

acura911 - This is why I'm hestitant in joining the group buy unless there has been a canadian on it. I don't believe XM was standard or even available equipment in Canada in this year. I do NOT have an XM button so the iSimple will not work?
Sorry, I didn't know the Canadian models did not have an XM button. Agree, if you don't have the XM button, I don't think the iSimple will work.
There is a member here with the username "Peripheral". He works for Peripheral Electrionics - who makes the iSimple. Send him a PM and ask him to get the official answer.

The 06 Canadian head unit does not have the XM button or even list XM as an option but the head unit does allow XM. On my 06 TL, with the NEO ipod adapter, I just have to press the mode button on the steering wheel to scroll through the various inputs. The adapter simulates XM and thus by using the mode button, you can access the XM feature, it even indicates XM in the TL display. Since I don't have the iSimple I cannot verify if this will work on the Canadian TL but contact the vendor for verification.
Here you go - everything you need to know for installation (this one is for the USA Spec, but the steps are essentially the same for all): https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-audio-bluetooth-electronics-navigation-94/i-160-usa-spec-install-633080/
Regarding the silver trim - Start from the back (near the arm rest) and you'll find spaces where you can twist the knife and the next closest clip will pop. Keep doing that until you get up near the nav screen. There are three clips up there that are difficult. Most people start getting rather nervous at this point (including me) that they are going to break something or bend the trim (since most of it is loose). You just need to apply a little extra "tug" on the trim (holding it near the clips that are still in place) and it will come loose. Best of luck.
iSimple is the way to go if you don't care too much about video being displayed. If you want video depending on what APPLE device you have you need to a little more research.
Is it even possible to purchase a 07 US head unit for us canadians and install it seeing in how the 07 plays mp3's and wma's???
If im going to fork out money for a new unit, why not spend the extra lil bit for the option of mp3 cds....
other that that... all one needs to do technically is purchase an xm button equipped unit and plug their regular ipod adaptor in and wham your good as gold?

Additionally, I don't know why the focus on the XM button...you don't have to have an XM button to get some of these iPod adapters to work. For example, I use the USA Spec HON2Y and I can get to it by using the "Disc/Tape" button since the head unit recognizes the adapter as a second CD-Changer.
A different version of the OP's question:
I have an Iphone 3g & 07 Type-S with XM NavTraffic (not subscribed yet but will be in a couple months) so as I understand it the ISimple won't work.
I don't really care to have video capability through the Navi but I would like text display and control through the steering wheel and Iphone. Also want to maintain integration with HFL though it seems that most solutions provide this.
Can anyone recommend a solution for this? I've been reading the forums but my head is swimming in all the different components and model year/accessory compatibilites and I don't have time to search anymore.
Thanks in advance.

The upcoming USA Spec PA15-HON3 will allow for your install. Supports 3G phones, will allow XM Traffic to stay in tact.
Not available yet, another month or so according to USA Spec
Hi uncald4, I'm looking to connect a Sirius plug-n-play directly into a NavTraffic enabled head unit and have also been told about the upcoming PGHHD2 from Peripheral. Do you know which port on the back of the radio will this use and/or which button it will use on the head unit?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Your XM source button will access anything connected to the Peripheral PXAMG. The PGHHD2 cable will most likely be similar to the PGHHD1 and plug into the expansion plug on the rear of the TL radio where your XM is currently plugged in. Although, I have not seen the PGHHD2 cable yet.
