Has anyone had any luck with establishing the Phone-Data Connection?

I have a 07 TL with Nav. Has anyone had any luck with establishing the Phone-Data Connection in the car's navigation system so the car can communicate with the Acura server? How about manually? I've tried all the easy setup options and failed using the iPhone. Any advice will be appreciated.

I bought a new 07 TL-S last month. I was not able to get my phone data connection made either. I have a Treo 700W on Verizon. Was told it was a Verizon issue. They block many features the phone is capable of. Did a little investigating and found some interesting info here: href="http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=51. But most of it was not actionable for me. But perhaps for someone who understands phone technology it might be more helpful.

What phone/carrier do you have?

I'm not sure what you guys are trying to do, but the HFL's use of Bluetooth is very limited. Here is a recent thread on it: Play MP3/Audiobook through HFL

One of the new features of the 07 TL is that the car can utilize the data plan of your cell phone to communicate with the Acura server to schedule service and such. We're trying to establish that connection.

I believe my problems are due to the fact that my company uses Verizon which blocks alot of features of my Bluetooth enabled Treo 700W.

According to handsfreelink.com there are very few phones that support data and the 700w/wx is not one of them.

Nick: I don't know what protocol it uses. But as HiTEC points out, my particular phone is not on the list of supported phones.

Well, that's interesting. I have to assume that DUN is the protocol it would use given their terminology used on the website - have you updated the firmware on the device?
http://www.palm.com/us/support/downl...r/verizon.html
That added DUN support. If you haven't updated, try the update and see if you have more success.

Nick, I haven't. I thought about it. But you can't do it via a Bluetooth connection to Active Sync and I have misplaced my USB cable. If no one else chimes in here, I'll post my results after taking this update...in a week or so when ever I can find my cable.

It should not use Dial Up Networking or Modem-Tether; it should be using the bluetooth connection as an internet gateway via the data services on your phone (that's why they warn you about possible data connection fees; not talk-time/minute fees).

From HFL Site - Available/Compatible DATA Packages (doesn't mean your phone will work!) :

DATA PACKAGES FROM VERIZON
Broadband National Access, also known as "Voice Data Bundle" or "Data Add On"

DATA PACKAGES FROM CINGULAR (AT&T)
MEdia(TM) Packages
Data Connect - Smartphones & PDAs, 5MB, 10MB, 20MB, and Unlimited MB

DATA PACKAGES FROM T-MOBILE
Total Internet - This package allows internet connection through the network, or through hotspots, and is Phone As Modem capable.

DATA PACKAGES FROM SPRINT
Phone as Modem (PAM) - Power Vision - High speed internet connection, available on select handsets. It has full capabilities of connecting to any website and to any http server, with data transfer.

Other carrier info available on the site as well.. I still think the HFL site is a piece of a junk; mainly because it shows my old phone (HTC 8125) as functioning OK but my new phone (8525) fails; they're both WM5 and have the same bluetooth features.

You can d/l the update package to the SD card and update from that.

bluetooth connection as an internet gateway = High-speed dial up networking (DUN) – Supports USB and Bluetooth connections.

DUN uses a data connection, not a voice connection.

Your old phone and you new one may say they use the same 'features' does not mean they use the same Bluetooth stack/software.

ok...I borrowed a cable and updated my treo 700w.

Then I did a google search and found some info...where else, but right here on AZ...in the RL forum: https://acurazine.com/forums/archive...php/t-789.html

I followed the steps outlined and it worked...I think. I mean, when I finished and tested the connection, the system confirmed the setup. So, I think it's working but I don't really know for sure because I don't really know what it is suppose to do when it is connected.

I think fairy's are supposed to appear and shoot off fireworks. At least that is what happens when I connect my phone to my Prius :o

Can you email acuralink and have them force a notice for something like an oil change? I've never seen an acura before so I'm not sure about it's full ability.

yeah, I was expecting something dramatic...fireworks would have been nice!

I'll email them and see if they can force something. Otherwise, I'll expect to see something when it's time for my first oil change..? maybe.

If it does indeed work, next time I'm home back in Pittsburgh I'll send up a flare for you.

Umm.. well i've got these options

- Tether via USB and get internet through the active data connection
- Connect via bluetooth and DIAL INTO the Cingular/AT&T GPRS/3G/EDGE (*99)
- Connect via bluetooth using the phone as an internet gateway, DOES NOT dial

Dialing means phone.. while it's not a voice connection you would be dialing via your voice service.

No, that's not correct. When you send the *99, you're telling the tower to establish a data connection - in fact, every time you make a data connection, there's a dialer somewhere issuing a command - but you won't see it. Nothing is analog here - just because you're 'dialing' doesn't really mean you're talking to a PBX box. If you're not the one pressing the buttons, there's a program on the device you're connected to doing the work instead.

Think about it, your 2nd example was that you're dialing, but if it really worked like you're thinking you would be establishing the same connection as a old 56k computer analog modem. (that really annoying wooosh) That's the only way to send a signal through a 'voice' system. Do you really thing that's happening?

- Connect via bluetooth and DIAL INTO the Cingular/AT&T GPRS/3G/EDGE (*99)
- Connect via bluetooth using the phone as an internet gateway, DOES NOT dial

So, the only difference between these 2 is who's doing the dialing. You, or the remote machine you paired your phone to. The remote machine can do this because you allowed the DUN profile to be active when you first paired the two up.

I guess I thought it was still dialing because I have the option of choosing "CSD Line" for my data on the phone which dials a 1-123-123-1234 number (not that number of course but its the full thing)

I am able to connect to my laptop via Bluetooth to my BB Pearl using the parameters below, but it fails when I try to use the same parameters with the Acura Phone-Data connection and the Peal. No idea why.

These instructions are from AT&Ts / Cingular's website.

Setting up the connection

1. On the PC, click Start, Settings, Control Panel and then double click Network Connections.
2. Click the link to Create a new connection.
3. This will open a New Connection Wizard. Click Next to begin the setup.
4. Click to select Connect to the Internet.
5. Click Next.
6. Click to select Set up my connection manually.
7. Click Next.
8. Click to select Connect using a dial-up modem.
9. Click Next.
10. Check the box to select the Standard Modem.
11. Ensure it is the only modem checked and click Next.
12. Type for the ISP Name and click Next.
13. Type *99# for the Phone number.
14. Click Next.
15. If prompted, click to select whether to make this connection available for Anyone’s use, or My use only.
16. Click Next.
17. Type ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM in the User name field.
18. Type CINGULAR1 in the Password and Confirm password fields.
19. Tick to select from the available options below and click Next.
20. Click Finish to complete the setup.

Making the connection

1. On the PC, return to the Network Connections folder and double click the ATT Data icon.
2. Ensure the Dial field reads *99#.
3. Click Dial.

You will now be connected to the AT&T data service.

Are there any data connection options for the HFL unit?

I've connected via my 8525 using the same procedure you listed; but I don't think HFL has the ability to "dial" and authenticate with a name and password. Does anyone know what bluetooth profile the HFL data connection is attempting to use; maybe what command it's trying to send to the phone?

It seems to me that my settings are carrier independant. Try to use them. To be honest with you, though...I'm not sure mine is actually working...I mean, really, how do I know until someday, maybe I'll get a message saying its time to get an oil change?

does anyone know how a Verizon phone "dials" in to the acuralink server? you have to enter it manually, since acura does not list an option for verizon.

I tried programming mine to dial #777 with username = qnc and password = qnc but I did not have any luck with that. The closest thing I came to success was by using the method I discovered on the RL forum.

Did you select easy set up or custom set-up?
