HandsFree Hell

I just picked up my TL on the 15th. My salesman paired my phone for me and I didn't have any major problems. After about a week, the car "lost" the pairing with my cell phone. I tried to pair my phone, but had no luck. I would get through every step, but when I would go to name my phone, the bluetooth connection would be lost.
I tried over a dozen times. I cleared all handsfree settings from my car. Deleted all bluetooth profiles from my phone. At this point, I tried everything I could possibly think of, aside from disconnecting the battery. I called the HandsFreeLink help number in the manual, they had me repeat the same steps. We got the same result. I also tried another bluetooth phone. No luck.
I call Palm Beach Acura (my local dealer). I must have called 5 times before I was able to reach someone in service. I wasn't able to leave a voicemail in my prior attempts either. The service guy asks "Did you buy the car here?" I tell him I bought it at Rick Case in Ft Lauderdale. He then asks "Then why are you bringing the car here?" To make it short, this guy Craig was rude and make me feel extremely uncomfortable. I definitely gave him a piece of my mind and also called Acura to let them know my experience. Let me not get too far off topic.
I make it to my appointment bright & early, 8am. I happened to notice that I am getting absolutely no response from my HandsFreeLink this morning. They tell me my system has locked up and they have reset the system. "The Handsfreelink operates on a CPU and it's in an area where it doesn't get very good air circulation. It can overheat and lock up. I can't promise this won't happen again".
This answer was just completely unacceptable. If there's a problem, a recall has to get issued & it has to get fixed. Anyway, the guy tells me I have to go home & enter the navigation/radio codes and it will work just fine....Yeah unfortunately I didn't bring the codes with me. This was a big mistake on my part. I get home, enter the codes & no response from the HandsFree button. I select HandsFreeLink in the MID. It says "booting up". It says this for about 10 minutes and then I get the HandsFreeLink people on the phone again. They claim it should never say "booting up" and it must be a problem with the software. They have me do a couple checks and no responses from anything. For some reason they're surprised that the radio is working though.
After 3 more calls to Palm Beach Acura, getting no where and still not being able to leave a message, I decided to call Rick Case. They supposedly have a great service department and are so so worried about receiving good ratings. I have an appointment for them on Thursday. Sucks that they're nearly an hour away, but hopefully it'll save me time and frustration in the long run.

Anyway, I apologize for the rant. Has anyone had a similar problems? Any suggestions? I pulled the negative battery terminal for 10 minutes, reset everything, but same old.

Recalls are made for safety issues only. If enough people have the same problem, there may be a TSB issued for it. Even if there is a TSB however, there's no garuntee an Acura Dealership will fix it free.

I had the same problem with pairing my V710 with the HFL. I kept losing the connection when I get to the last step of naming the phone. The HFL system kept telling me the the name of the connection can also be recognized as " the same name I said" !!!! so please choose another name or long name... I tried all options but same result so I gave up about after an hour...

But next morning..when I did tried..it worked... I am not sure how..but it did. Its been 3 days now since my phone is paired , no problems yet.

I just paired mine simply and without issue. I did call the 800 number to ask and they told me the V710 would only work with the newer version of software (1.4 not 1.3) That may be something you want to check.

not true. i have a v710 with 1.3 firmware, and while it doesn't display signal strength or battery meter, it works flawlessly.

anyway, it does sound like there's something seriously wrong with your HFL. have you tried asking them to replace the entire HFL system? (well, cpu). it might be the best solution, since making an hour long trip to the dealership everytime this happens would be a PITA - especially once you get used the convenience of HFL. good luck with that.

I have a Nokia 6230. Although it doesn't show battery or signal strength, the HandsFreeLink people say it is 100% compatible.
Both times I have called, they say if the dealer cannot fix it, they will replace the entire system. We'll see what happens Thursday.

I paired my Sony T68(i) with my car twice and a loaner. Never had a problem. Never read the instructions either. The issue might be with phone. Withe sony, I had to make it "Discoverable" and then While the car was trying to discver the phone, I simultaneously had the phone discover the car. It seemed to work.

Now, I don't mean to hijack this thread, but everytime I call out on my hands free and if the call is answered by voicemail, the hands free cuts out. Does anyone have a fix?

I had that problem with a nokia once. I turned off the car disconnected the battery and reset the system, it worked fine then. In your case, I would go to a dealer that is willing to be cool and ask them to replace it. They shouldn't have a problem with it seeing as how you are covered under warranty.

I am also not sure why te3point5 believes the dealer may charge for a TSB, they should not charge for a TSB if your car is still under warranty - unless there is something I am missing.

My Treo 650 paired fine with my TL in March, but as of yesterday the phone icon appears for about 10 seconds when I get in the car and then disappears and HFL no longer sees the phone.

I've had a slew of other problems with the phone, so I'm waiting on a new one before I blame the TL.

Rick Case replaced my HFL today. That dealership really has great service. They always brag about being JD Power certified, I just always thought it was a bunch of BS. They are really professional and more importantly, very fast.
He said the new HFL unit is different than the existing one. I would like to think it is an improved one, but considering my build date wasn't even a month ago, I doubt they could have fixed the problem that quickly. Luckily this problem seems pretty isolated.

I don't know what it is, but lately my HFL isn't interpreting my voice commands properly. Navi has always worked flawlessly, but HFL is a little buggy. Knowing that I use to work for the company that made the HFL, I'm not too surprised.

I just turned in my 05 TL this morning for a similar problem. The HFL has never worked for me since pickup. The car only has ~150 miles on it. When I press the talk button to start setup, I get no voice prompts. In the MID when I go to HFL and press select, I'm also presented with the "booting up" message. I'll keep my fingers crossed and see what the dealer says and how they fix it.

I use a Nokia 7610 phone and get the same problems with the car loosing its pairing with the phone. And then it would take a few tries before it would be able to re-pair with the phone-it would loose the connection when I tried to name the phone.

At first I believed it was a bug with HFL but then I realized it was a fault with my phone! There was once when the same thing happened, I restarted my phone and voila- everything worked fine again. This happens every 2 weeks or so but restarting my phone is so much easier than having to re-pair it everything it looses its connection to HFL.

Just my 2cents

Thumbs down

I just had the same problem that shotcaller88 descirbes. The HFL flatlines and I get the booting up message on the MID. Nothing works. Not even badly.

Looks like it off to the dealer

I've started to have problems with my Sony Ericsson S710a. Pairing is not a problem, but when I try to dial a call, HFL would say that there is no service available although the reception bars indicate good to excellent reception.

General fix that works for me is to turn off the cell. Turn it back on. Let it pair again. It's like rebooting your cell phone. Good for it once in a while.

I recently purchased an '06 TL and i'm noticing that HFL isn't interpreting my voice commands properly. I say the number i want dialed but when HFL repeats the numbers back to me they are completely different.
I mentioned this to the dealer, and of course they have the standard remarks like ... are the windows open? or the sunroof? in my case none of this is the problem, i've tried dialing from myown driveway car not moving with windows, doors, sunroof all closed. no outside noise whatsoever and i have the same problem. Most times it takes 3-4 tries cycling in and out of HFL before it gets it right.
Made an appointment to bring car in, and it's at West Palm Beach Acura, lets see what they come up with.

I have an 04 TL and an Unlocked Treo 650 GSM on Cingular. I am on the latest Firmware for the Treo - 1.20. I have absolutely no issues with the paring of my Treo 650 with my TL. Pairs flawlessly when I get into my TL everyday... On the earlier version of the firmware I did have issues... Prior top the Treo I had a Motorola V600 and I had no issues with that phone as well. Make sure that you have the latest version of the firmware for your phone.

I had the same problem, but only after my roommate tried to connect his blue tooth phone along with mine already connected.

I tried tons of times to get it back sync'ed, with no avail.

Here is what I did to fix it: I deleted the profile on my phone and the car. Then I re-set it back up and it worked just fine.

Try just deleting everything on the phone and car, then try syncing again.

Hope that works.

EDIT: nevermind...the other posts didn't show up a second ago.
