garage door opener

Hi - just picked up my demo 2007 TL yesterday whoo hooo
I read one article that you had to disconnect your garage door opener before programming the buttons in the car but another article that you did not have to - does either way work?
Stupid question - the dealership manager has his home address in the Navi - how do I replace it with mine?

Thanks

question 1 - no, you don't need to but might have to push a button on the opener itself if it's rolling code.

question 2 - it's in the setup menu somewhere

To erase, you can press 1 and 3 at the same time, it will erase all your garage settings.

I assume all Homelink are the same. Guess not, I have a BMW and Lexus. All I need is press "train" in my garage and press the button&hold in my car to learn. That didn't work for my 07 Acura. For my Acura, I need to carry my garage remote with me, repeat the learn process above, after, repeat the process again without the remote. What a pain.

You don't have to disconnect your garage door opener before programming it into your car. To program the Acura homelink is different then other cars. The new IS, all you have to do is press the remote and the button in the car and that was that. With my TL, I had to first train the homelink, THEN I had to go train my garage motor. After, if I remember correctly, I just had to press the button again and it was finished. I never carry any of my garage/gate remotes in my car.

This does raise a concern ... with 'home' programmed, and your garage door linked to the button, any car thief (or dishonest mechanic) could go to your home and gain entry. I think I'll avoid using the dedicated 'home' and just program my home address as a regular saved address. Come to think of it, I know where I live so maybe I don't need to do program it at all On the other hand, I could get drunk at a party and have someone else take me home!

Nice to see you are weighing the pros and cons of this.

I programmed in a fictitious address within a couple of blocks of my house as the "home" address. It's useful for finding the quickest way home or alternate ways home from unfamiliar places.

Unfortunately, the auto registration will have my real address on it until I change it to a PO box.

well, gaining entry to your garage should not automatically allow somebody into your house - just keep the door from the garage into the house locked..

Still could have access to your garage and stuff in it. If a mechanic really wanted, he could just look in your file and get home address from there.

I did the same thing. My nav thinks my home is at an intersection in my neighborhood, but not at my actual address.

Regarding the registration, I keep a photocopy of mine in the car that only has my name on it. I blocked out the address before I made the copy. There is nothing in my car that identifies where I live.

Navi lets you setup a PIN for your home address so you no one else can access it unless you type the PIN in on the navi screen. Protects your address from anyone else to see and still usable for you when you need to.

The reason they say to disconnect your garage door before programming is so that your not opening and closing your door constantly while programming your button. It's probably a cover your ass thing since "your not watching the door" in case little children decide to lay underneath it while your trying to program your snazzy new car
