Franken-Navi

I've been working on a non-navi to navi conversion and decided to use add an 8" widescreen Dynamix monitor to the fun for the future addition of a computer.

Ready to test. There was barely enough room to add the VGA interface inside the case. The backlight, touchcontroller and display controls will be mounted outside the case. I just have everything zip tied so they don't short out while I am testing.

The converter I am using

Front shot. The foam around the edges are not tweaked yet. I am just getting things attached to test it out.

Here is some progress I've made on the project

The backlight circuit is bolted to the back of the display cover.

I had to step down 12VDC to 5VDC for the converter so that's what is bolted to the RGBS to VGA converter.

I also took off the IR detector from the front panel board and put in an extension so I can mount it so it's unseen and still use the remote that came with the unit (that's the orange wire with the grey ribbon cable)

I also recycled a connector to make the RGBS/GND connections so I could simply pop out the pins from the stock location and pop them into this location.

Everything works fine. I had pulled my hair out wondering why I couldn't get the touch screen to react correctly. I reconnected it to the USB touch controller that came with the display and the 2nd touch panel on this unit has gone bad. I had another panel so I tried it and it worked fine. I removed the old panel put the other one on top and it works like a champ.

I won't buy another Dynamix monitor EVER. Their support is good, but the product is horrible.

I'lll be finishing up my connections to the CAN/VSS and HFL circuits sometime next week. I'm still waiting for the antenna and steering control switch to arrive.

Parts should be here tomorrow but will be in Montreal all weekend so it'll hopefully be done by next week.

Nice project - I am very interested because I am trying to do a similar thing with the same type of screen.

I spoke with Dom (TvandNav2go) on this and he said no converter was needed, so I am curious why you used one. According to the folks who make the Dynamix screen, it has two RCA inputs, and one RGB(VGA). So Dom said you simply needed to wire things up to use the RGB input, no conversion necessary. Any ideas on the difference of opinions? Obviously you didn't hook up the converter for fun, so I'm just looking for some clarification to see where the confusion lies.

Also, I would love to get a parts list from you if possible as it would save me a lot of time.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Oh, sorry, forgot to ask but when you have some sample pictures of how the output looks it would be great if you could post them!

Thanks again.

Look a like he try to replace factory original navi screen(screen only not interface) with dynamix screen and use factory interface so he does need rgb vga converter if I am correct.
Interesting project. I like to see result.

This seems to be the way to go - then you can always drop back to the factory system if you need to. I like that only because if the CarPC goes down, you still have the factory system. Plus, it makes it easier on resale.

The reason it won't work like that is becasue the navi signal has a composite sync of 15khz. Here is more info on the adapter.

looks good, I was going to do a custom carputer and keep it a secret until it was done, but due to a few things lately, it won't be happening. Here was what I was going to do:

Get a Xenarc or Lilliput touchscreen and put in place of the factory navi screen.
Get a RGB/VGA adapter and send the navi output to the Xenarc or Lilliput screen
Get a Carputer with the Roadrunner Front End and a navigation software suit and hook it up the the screen.

This way I could have the factory navi and operate it though the little joystick and 6 buttons, keep the factory audio system and it's ability to mute HFL, etc. Also the benefit of this is that you would have a nice, high res. display for movies and the pc.

Check this car_pc with 8.4" dynamix screen integrated navi button to car_pc
So, hvac button embedded as keyboard and mouse.
