Faulty TPMS Warning with PIE X3

I did my install this weekend on my '06 TL, but experienced a bug with the PIE X3.

At certain times when I turn on the car, there will be a TPMS warning (beep and message) on my MID, but the funny thing is if I turn off the car, then turn it on again, it goes away!

Certain times, there are no problems at all.

It seems to happen more when the driver door is open when starting the car, but I haven't tested anything fully to pin point it. I know for sure its related to the PIE since I started having this problem when I installed the X3 (the car did not move before the install for a couple of days).

I plan on calling PIE and the online store I purchased it from to see if they know anything about it. I just thought I give everyone the heads up and see if anyone experienced the same thing.

The PIE X3 has awesome sound quality and I hope there is a fix/workaround for it. Any suggestions?

If its the PIE, its faulty or an install problem. I have a PIE in mine, with no problem. I know this is a dumb question, but is it possible that one of your tires is borderline low?

The car was parked in the same location for a few days with me getting in and out of the car many many times. I wonder if that was enough to decrease the tire pressure.

Possible, but I will double check! I haven't noticed it since I've driven the car. Thanks Steve.

At 5K miles, my '06 TL began displaying an intermittent TPMS system error (could be different if yours is actually showing low tire pressure) out of the blue. It drove me bonkers for a week, because it happened randomly and always cleared if I restarted the car.

Dealer replaced a faulty sensor in one of my wheels, but it took them over an hour to find/reproduce the issue and they told me the error code isn't stored.

The reason I am attributing it to the PIE X3 is because I first noticed the problem when trying to get the X3 installed. At first the X3 didn't power up at all and after some troubleshooting, it was a loose plug in the back of the headunit. During the troubleshoot, certain times that the X3 was plugged in, the TPMS warning came on. When the PIE was disconnected, the warning went away. When the X3 was plugged in and in testing phase, the warning message would appear randomly when starting up the car.

I hope it is just be coincidence, since I don't really want to remove the dash to take out the PIE again. I'll have to check the tire pressure after work, but like I have stated, there hasn't been any warnings since I've moved the car from its installation spot. My roundtrip drive to Irvine after the install was flawless.

I'll keep everyone posted, but suggestions/comments are still welcome.

maybe it is causing the problems, but i see no way how the two systems are connected.

I thought it was weird when the light came on the first time. Initial response was: Did I blow a fuse?! That doesn't explain why it the warning comes on sometimes and is fine after a restart.

I will check the tire pressures later on today. If its around 25 PSI then I know its borderline pressure. I read on a thread that the sensors go off around there.

I'll hold off on contacting PIE and my online store (myradiostore.com) until I know for sure its PIE related.

sometimes tire pressure does decrease slightly if the car was not moved for awhile. hmmm...this is somewhat perplexing...I'm gonna sit on this one for awhile and see if I can think of something!

Checked the tire pressure today. They are all around 31-33 PSI.

So far, everytime I've started the car, I am not getting any warnings from TPMS. I think I will agree with the idea that the car was just sitting at one position for too long and just needed to be driven.

So this bug is closed unless the warnings appear again. Thanks all for your help.

D,
NO WAY the PIE X3 is causing this. They're totally independent systems. You could remove your radio and drive around without disturbing your TPMS.

I've read that the sensors "sleep" when there's no movement... and there's some form of centrifical switch in the sensor that wakes it up when the wheels roll.

I suspect you have a sensor that's hanging/failing. Keep an eye on it, and get it to your dealer if it persists.

Next time I see the warning, I will try to pin point which tire sensor is going off, take some pictures, then bring it to the dealership so I they can just fix it without trying to duplicate it.

I am very impressed with the sound quality of the PIE.

DCC: I'm up in Irvine almost every weekend. Usually near the Irvine Spectrum area. PM me if you want to meet up sometime. There is also this: SoCal MEGA meet July 16th
