Escort 9500ci radar detector/laser shifter integrated installation
I wanted to get an integrated radar detector that was not mounted to my windscreen. The 9500ci seemed like a good option in the USA, although other brands like antilaser are supposedly better for laser shifting. I got help from an installer. We left off the rear shifter because it would block my backup camera and the workaround was going to be a giant PITA. Overall, the final install is okay. The device is sensitive but does not provide false alerts very often--a gps sensor allows the unit to "remember" false alerts so they are not repeated. I am very impressed with the unit so far and give it a positive recommendation, if only for its sensitivity. I'd like to compare it to other laser shifters, too, but I've had trouble finding people to do this.
For those who aren't familiar, radar detecting is supposed to allow you enough time to slow down before the radar can determine your speed. Laser shifting is supposed to provide a window of time for you to slow down before the gun can zero in on you. Instant on/POP radar is virtually impossible to avoid because the gun will guage speed instantly and not allow you time to slow down before the speed is registered.

I did not install the rear shifter (in my hand); this did not seem to affect the system's performance (no warning signals, etc.). Install of the rear shifter would block my backup camera and I could not find a good work around.
Screen and warning light were mounted above the steering column.
controller, located in the lower bay behind my shift knob.
close up of controller mounted into the bottom bay. The bay closes for a clean look for concealment.
whole setup: above the steering column are the warning light and screen; the controller is in the lower bay; the speaker is mounted beneath the steering column.
bumper install. Parts of the bumper plastic had to be cut away to make room for the shifters and the detector is installed behind the Acura symbol.

The V1 is very sensitive. I would not deal with Valentine for the reason that it does not have GPS and it is detectable by the radar detector detectors (yes, I know how stupid that sounds, but these are supposedly used in states where radar detectors are illegal.) Also, the V1 is quite large and although you can do cool stuff like use the V1 rearview mirror or remote install, it is still ginormous sitting on your window. So for me it was all about the clean install and the lack of false alerts. The 9500ci does not register many false alerts at all.
Also, the gps antenna is behind the steering column. I forgot to mention that. It seems to be working just fine from there.
I'm having some issues with the speaker. I have to mess with the wiring again. The speaker is shorting out a lot all of a sudden so something came loose, I guess.

you can easily get 9500ci for around $1k on ebay. It's well worth the extra money. These are so vastly superior to anything at V1 makes...but all the cheapskates on here keep buying the V1s...it's really a mistake to do that.

V1 sucks, but it's much cheaper. I just couldn't take putting that ginormous dinosaur VCR thing on my window. Ruins the whole car.
