Elemental Designs sub & amp install w/pics

I've been sitting on my new gear for a few weeks now while I waited for the sub enclosure to be built. I just got it in on Friday, and worked all weekend to get everything installed. At least with all that time waiting, I had the opportunity to properly plan everything out.

First I took apart all 4 doors and did a complete sound deadening on both the doors and the door panels. I installed a lot of eDead V1SE and V3, and also stuffed all holes and crevices with as much polyfill as I could get in. Before installation, I could hear a bit of wind noise where the bottom of the window seals against the door. I could push on the door panel and it would go away. After sound deadening, you can't hear a thing. Also, the doors now shut solid like a Benz!

After the doors, I tackled the trunk lid. If you rap your nuckle on it, the thing sounds like a hollow tin can. I applied a lot of Edead, then stuffed it with about a pound of polyfill. Now when you rap you nuckle on it, you would think you're tapping a wood cabinet...very solid.

After that, I completely took out everything from the back seats rearward. I applied about 50 sq/ft of Edead, and focused on the areas where Acura had already applied some sort of deadening material. I went out and drove the car with everything out so that I could localize most of the noise. Most of it comes from the wheel well area, so I applied about 3 layers in those areas. As you will see from the photos below, I have some thin spaces with gaps, but that's just because I loaded up so heavy in other areas (and only had so much Edead to go around). In additionl, I stuffed polyfill in every area I possibly could. The back quarter panels took about a pound per side.

I installed my David Navone LOC into the sub line, and tapped into the Nav unit (yel/red wire) for my 12v remote line. With all of that done, it's time to put the car back together and hook up the components.

I built 2 separate walls...an amp wall, and a beauty board in front of the sub. The amp wall provides a clean setup, and I have access to the cables in the rear set pass-through. The 1cf sub enclosure sits right in front of that, and then the beauty board presses in right in front of the sub enclosure. I used 1/4" oak for my boards, and covered them with charcoal carpet from Parts Express. I think they both turned out pretty good for my first time ever doing this!

I filled my 1cf enclosure with 1lb of polyfill. The sub itself is a 13oV.3, dual 2ohm wired in series (4 ohm load).

The amp is an Elemental Designs NINe.2X...bridged to 600 watts @ 4ohm. I set the gains at approximately 49 volts, set the crossover (to start) at 80hz, and let 'er rip!

The sub hits with authority, but does not overwhelm the stock system. The deadening must have been a good job, because I'm currently getting no rattles either inside or out. The sound is quite a bit different than it was in my RSX, since the TL is completely enclosued in the trunk whereas the RSX was open air to the hatch area.

The stock system had an "ok" sub, but now the entire sound of the system has been completely transformed.

For those who are considering just a sub/amp install, I can say that you will be blown away by how good it can sound with that simple of an upgrade. I'd highly recommend taking your time and completely sound deadening while you're at it...it keeps the inside sounds in, and the outside sounds out. It will also improve both SQ and SPL of your system.

Any questions...fire away...I'd be glad to help.

Now for what you really want...pics!

Niiice, Very Niiice, soo clean... I'm also planning on an eD install. Probably going with a single 11Ov2 though. It looks like that box was made by eD as well.

Will you be upgrading the speakers with eD 6500/6000s?

I love how clean that looks. Must sound good too. I am going to install my subs and amp from my old car in soon. Where did you tap into to get the audio signal for the sub?

Yep, it's an ED box as well. I had the 6500's in my RSX, and thought they were incredible speakers. I'm probably going to leave the rest of this system stock though...

I got the signal from the sub speaker wires. I used a line output converter (LOC) from the stock wires to the inputs on the amp.

I've had 2-10" Ov.2 sub in my car for a while now in a sealed enclosure... and they sound great... I've recently upgraded all interior speakers with 2 sets of ED 6500 and now I have to upgrade my sub enclosure to a vented box to balance out the system... ED makes great stuff and their customer service is Phenomenal... they absolutely stand behind their product...

Wow...2 sets of 6500's and 2 ov's...that must sound awesome! What amp(s) are you pushing them with? As for mounting the 6500's in the front doors and dash...did you have much difficulty? When I installed them in my RSX, I had to do a ton of hacking to get them mounted. I ended up spending a tremendous amount of time on them, which is one of the reasons why I don't want to put them in the TL.

I'm running the 2 11Ov.2 with one Nine.1 and I'm running the 2 sets of 6500 with an Alpine PDX4.150 and I'm controlling everything with a Rockford 3sixty.2.... Everything sounds good... I just need to set my gains on the Alpine more precisely....

In order to mount the 6500... I had to make the speaker openings 1/2" larger.. that's taking 1/4" off all around. The wonders a jigsaw does... lol... on the doors I had to mount the speakers with a wood spacer. On the dash... I basically removed the grill off the tweeters and fitted it inside the factory mount with some glue... everything looks stock...

I basically did the same thing you did in the truck except for the beauty board.

It sounds very similar to what I had to do in my RSX. Without the Dremmel, I never would have been able to do it! I've gotten pretty good with hack-work while using the Dremmel and jigsaw...

I used the yellow and red wire on the DVD navigation unit in the trunk.

This is a great looking install. I'm considering ED gear for my car.

How did you get the dimensions and contours to cut your boards so they fit? Are they press-fit in or are they mounted solidly somehow?

Did you remove your stock sub or is it still mounted?

I like the idea of putting 6500's in the front but I don't want to have to do too much "hacking" to get them to fit.

rodneyc77 - do you think you'll be able to put stock speakers back in after your modification? I'd like to be able to put everything back to stock for when I get rid of the car.

Thanks for the info guys.

I think you can... but I didn't really have that in mind when doing mine... I will not be removing any speakers when the car is sold, traded... etc...

Actually I'm going to be selling the eD gear. It's great stuff, but I'm upgrading to a DLS 5-channel amp, and Rainbow comps and sub.

As for the contours...it was just trial and error with cardboard until I got just the right template. At that point I transferred it to plywood, cut/sanded it, and then carpeted it. They're both just a compression fit and hold in place with no problems (even with aggressive driving).
