DVD-A Beware

Went to Best Buy tonight, asked for DVD-As, and was led to the section.

I bought what I was led to believe to be a DVD-A, turned out to be an SACD.

Car spit it out, as did computer and DVD player at home

Best Buy would not take it back as it was open.

It was in the DVD-A section, and had ZERO markings as SACD on the outside.

Emailed Columbia Records asking WTF?

We'll see. No huge deal, $14.99, but totally wasted $$$.

Be careful shopping for DVD-A for your 5.1 surround. SACD will not play.

Livid.

You need to buy DVD-R. All DVD-A means is DVD-Audio it's not a type of DVD.

Did the same last week. Do not buy the Aerosmith. It is in the DVD-A section but is an SACD and will not play. I guess we just eat the $$$ or re-wrap and put it on ebay. I was going to try to take mine back as well.

You mis-understand his post. He is talking about pre-recorded media. he is not talking about burnable media. (I would think this is fairly obvious to most as there are no recordable SACD's)

You are absolutely correct though, in terms of burnable media. DVD-A is the format used for the recording session with the burning software. the Types of discs that can be used to create a DVD-A disc are DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW. (although i would recommend DVD-R most of the time as that is what people are having the best luck with)

i've also browsed thru best buy's very small dvd-a section...though it seemed like they had many dvd-a discs, i found maybe 3 out of the whole section...most of them were SACD and another format similar to SACD (can't remember), so you REALLY have to pay attention to what the case says...and yeah, the dvd-a disc cases are usually bigger than most others...

SACDs or Super Audio CDs are marked pretty clearly:

The best way I have found is the buy the discs marked as "dual" discs. They are CD on one side for normal CD players, and then DVD-A on the other side. Just look for the sticker on the fron that says "dual disc"

the case should have labeled "DVD Audio" logo on it.

You also have to be careful with DVD-Video disks with audio tracks. These too will not play in the TL. You'll have to re-rip them to be able to listen to the tracks.

Make sure the label says DVD-Audio.

that's what i was thinking of...dual-disc....that and the dvd-video discs with audio, which won't play in our cars and was already mentioned by datmrman...

the SACD's i saw weren't marked that clear as the pic above...you had to look for the label...

Dvd/a

LOL! Had a similar experience, in Brooklyn.
These people are clueless.
They think DVD Audio, is a DVD!
Buy online; cheaper, better selection, & zero grief
Amazon, DeepDiscount.com, Buy.com, etc.

See this thread regarding DualDiscs and beware, not all of them can be played on the TL's system. Couple of more DualDisc/DVD-A threads.

When I first bought the TL in '05 I went to Best Buy also for the DVD-A's. I asked the salesperson where they were located and she had absolutely no clue; she asked the supervisor of that dept. and he didn't know either. Although they were clueless, we did find them - the gal said she had never heard of them before.

I was careful not to buy anything other than a DVD-A; sometimes I had to look very hard to find the SACD's so that I didn't buy them - most of the time it was written in small print on the cover.

That's not enough. The Dual Disc standards are very loose. Could be CD/SACD, CD/DVD-Video or CD/DVD-Audio or CD/DVD hybrid (with both DVD-V and DVD-A) It has to have the DVD-Audio logo on it. The problem is the logo's are so frikin small that it is hard for me to see if it says "Audio" or "Video" under the letters "DVD". At least for my tired old eyes trying to see the logo through the packaging.

i will only buy my dvd-a discs online...retail stores don't have the selection or low enough price to compare with online stores...

i own two dvd-a discs: porcupine tree: in absentia and crystal method: legion of boom...i was a little sketchy when buying the legion of boom disc because the title of the page said 'crystal method - legion of boom dvd-audio...' but the description on the page (and on the case for the disc) said DTS Surround...ultimately it plays fine in the TL and displays as a "DVD-A" disc when inserted into the stereo...so DVD-A and DTS Surround are two labels to look for...

Super Audio CD is a hi-rez format developeed by Sony and Philips. And to play them, you need a SACD player. For more info, click here or Google it.

Great alternative to buy them online and you're right about the selection. At Best Buy in 05 I was limited to buying:
- The Eagles (Hotel California)
- Bob Marley & The Whalers (I forget what DVD-A it is - BUT IT'S LIVE AND AWESOME!)
- R. Kelly (also forget the name of it, but has two good songs on it - haha).

...keeping the variety fresh.

You have what is known as a "hybrid" SACD, which contains both 2 channel and SACD version. You're able to listen to the 2 channel side but not the other. Excerpt from Wikipedia . . .
Hybrid Super Audio CDs (which include both a Stereo CD and a Super Audio CD layer) can be played back on CD players. To hear the Super Audio CD Stereo and on many discs the Super Audio CD Multichannel layer require the use of a Super Audio CD player.
You can also check SA-CD.net for more info and QuadraphonicQuad for info on hi-rez discs.

Does anyone know whether it is possible to extract or rip the tracks from the SACD using Audio Extractor and then reformat the tracks into DVD-A using DVD-A Solo? I have extracted 5 or 6 channel audio tracks from many music videos and reformatted them into DVD-A.
