DVD-A Question

Sorry for the stupid question.

I am a newb when it comes to DVD audio. I Haven't tried to play on yet but I did notice that the player has the ability to play DVD-A.

I guess my question is: Once I transfer all of my music files, probably 600 songs, can I put them all on one DVD A? Since DVD A holds 4.7GB, that should hold about 900 songs, according to my calculations.

What happens when I have 600 songs on one disc, my entire collection. HOw do you get from song 3 to song 565 while the disc is in? Is there a way to see the name etc of the song or a different way to brose from one song early in the disc to one towards the end?

Does this make any sense? My DVD burner will be here today.. I guess it's trial and error for now..

Thanks.

I beleive there is a maximum of 99 songs per DVD-A. You also will not get 4.7G on the it but something like 4.4G. You can use a dual layered disk to double the capacity but again your limited to 99 songs (wav's not mp3's).

Check out this DVD-A creation thread:

There's a maximum of 99 songs per GROUP. Adobeman's DVD-A creation script allows for multiple groups.

Yes, I use 9 groups which gives me a potential of 891 tracks. I found it difficult to access a track above 30 using voice command and scolling thru the numbers is a pain so I split up my music in groups so there's not too many songs to scroll thru.

great, so in theory, I can have up to 900 something songs on 1 disc?
But like you said, it would be hard to get from song #3 to song #890.. can you only go up and down as on a regular disc??

Thanks and I will look at that thread.

so you need this special program in order to burn more than 1 group to a disc??
Won't my software that came with the burner allow me to do that? I think it's Nero 6 or something like that.
It should be here tomorrow and I'm excited to have so many songs on 1 disc, no more reaching to the back seat shuffling for the disc case to find a song lol.

sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Use Adobeman's DVD-A creation script to convert wav's. It will ask you if you want all songs in one group or to make each of it's subdirectories a group of it's own. The only drawback of more than one group is the DVD-A player in the TL will not automatically go to the next group. It instead goes to the next DVD/CD. You can manually switch to the next group by pressing two buttons at once. I'm not sure which ones (scan and repeat?). The script will make an ISO image after a few processing passes that nero can burn.

Wait a minute... Something sounds wrong here. How can he have 600 songs on ONE disc? If the songs are all 2 minutes, that's 1200 minutes. Still too much for one DVD-R.

Heat03 - Are your songs in mp3 format or wav? The player only supports wav files. If you burn all your songs to a DVD as mp3s, they will not play on the TL's system.

if you use adobeman's script:

each music file is converted into WAV format. each file after coversion is roughly 50MB. a blank single layer DVD is 4.7GB - let's say 4.5GB which is equal to 4,500MB.

if each song is 50MB, you can only fit 90 songs in a 4.5GB DVD disc. yes you can have up to 99 "files" per group but if each "file" is 50MB, there's no way you can fit more than 90

Wow, I guess I misunderstood the concept. Each of my "songs" or music files in .wav format are between 3-6 megs. lets use 5 for the sake of argument. 4500M of space available on a dvd divided by 5 megs per song = 900 songs..

What am I misunderstanding here?

Ok, I just looked at my music files.. and I was wrong. they are in mp3 format but they are in the size of the 5 meg range.

So you mean when they are converted to wav the files grow by 10 times the size??

A blank 80 minute CDR can hold 700MB of music. If you do the math, you will see what we've been trying to tell you.

And remember, if you burn the mp3s as they are to a CD or DVD, neither will work in your TL.

In other words, I don't think DVD burning will be for you. Wait for an adapter to play mp3s later on.

There is also no way to see what song title or artist info is on your DVD-R. It will just say Track 1, Track 23, etc.

got it.
thanks.
I don't know what math you are using but a dvd should hold 4700 MB. That's a whole lot more than a cd at 700. Should be 7 times more no? 700x7=4900MB.

the only problem I'm having is with the software I guess. Using what came with the burner, Nero 6 and it doesn't seem to be able to convert mp3 to whatever it needs to be to go on a dvd, wav i assume.

do you know what program I should get and use?

Thanks.

If you have music CD's Audio grabber will convet them to wave format. It's free and can be downloaded at http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net (will also convert to mp3). Then use Adobeman's DVD-A creation script to get the wav's to DVD-A format and burn the ISO image with your Nero.

I'm not sure what utilities will convert mp3 to wav (some quality loss).
