DVD Disc reading error 3G Garage #I-001
I have a 2004 TL. I have 140k miles on it. I recently(in the last 4 months) started getting the same dvd disc read error. It usually happens when it is cold out. about 5-15 minutes into driving it starts to work. I tried cleaning the disc(refaced it using a scratch removing disk cleaner), then I used a dvd lens cleaning disk(2 different types) and still I have the same problem. I had a side motor mount that went bad and leaked fluid and a power steering issue that caused p/s fluid to leak. Im wondering if either of those liquids could have found it's way onto a wire associated with the nav system and caused this problem. Has anyone else with this problem had any fluid leaks in the engine compartment?

there were no scratches on the disk. Since I was getting this "disk read error" i thought that cleaning and resurfacing the disc would help but it didnt. Still getting the same error message. Im getting very frustrated with this.
Problem fixed. Here's the procedure. Buy 2 different cd laser cleaning disks. 1 has a fixed brush about 1" from center hole. The other has 5 brushes evenly spaced on disk. Using either disk, start the car. Eject the nav disk, then put in cleaning disk, shut the cd door(this will start the disk spinning). Wait till you see the message on screen about incorrect disk. Open the door, eject cleaning cd and repeat process 5 times. Then do the same thing with the other cleaning disk 5 times. Now my dvd system boots up as fast as when it was new and works every time. Its important you do it at least 10 times and with 2 different cleaning disks. The first time I tried doing this I used only 1 disk and did the procedure once or twice and it didnt work. I was just about to take the unit in the trunk out and send to alpine at a cost of 185.00.
So I called the dealership after several attempts to reload the disc. The service rep said that the GPS satellites recently had their software updated to prevent hackers getting in and tracking vehicles. This is what is causing the error in my GPS device, supposedly, and I needed to order the latest disc that would update the software.
In other words, your car doesn't establish a satellite link with an orbiting satellite and say, "I am at 20 degrees longitude and 40 degrees latitude." What would be the point of contacting the satellites when it already knows where it is? Thus, hackers who are able to communicate with space equipment won't be able to obtain vehicle positions. They could hack it and make your navi think you're in the middle of the ocean....but that's about it.
Think about it...if you order satellite television, you have to install a satellite dish on the roof of your house. That way, the box on your tv can communicate with the satellite (otherwise, you'd have to either get the box its own dedicated phone line, or you'd have to get cable internet). News vans have dishes on top of extendable poles on their roofs. The last time I checked, regular cars don't have that "feature".
I've had a DVD disc error from time to time, always coincidentally when I'm down to about 10% oil life on the MID of my 2006 TSX. I've only received this error upon driving for some time and never at start up. Lucky for me, this never happened when I was going somewhere unfamiliar. This first occurred about 4 months after buying my TSX in July 2006. I turned the accessory mode on and off, ejected the DVD, etc. It seemed to fix itself after turning the ignition off and on most of the time.

The dealer has never been able to replicate the error in the 3 times I'd mentioned it. Well, I took my car in for an oil change yesterday and just as I pulled in, the error popped up and I had a service advisor confirm that he saw the message.
Turns out my DVD was fine and unscratched. I'd never taken the DVD out of the drive except for the first occurrence of this error. The technician verified that my disk looked fine and diagnosed my navi system. They ended up replacing the "navigation system control unit" according to my invoice. The service advisor told me that both the drive unit and navi cpu (?) was replaced under warranty.
According to my advisor, there was a service advisory or bulletin out for this error. I've been quickly skimming through the TSBs but I don't really see anything except for B06-001 (that appears to be details for dealers on how to order replacement parts). I'm still not sure where he came up with this or if there was anything official.

I have recently had my dealer tell me that my hard drive was broken on my navi when I received that error. He said the replacement was $4,500. Well, obviously I am not going to buy it from the dealer! I have an 06 TL. My stereo still shows up on there and the DVD Disc Error shows up when I try to use my navi. Does anyone know how I can get the disc out? Does it sound like the hard drive may be shot or is my dealer trying to take me for a ride???
If you have a OEM Navi, I don't believe that your system came with hard drive. It's possible that your disc (DVD) has some scratch or lint on it. Pop the disc out (from the unit in the trunk) and take a look at the condition of the disc. There's also a chance that the DVD drive has a dirty sensor that reads the disc. You may want to try one of the CD/DVD cleaner discs in your system, to see if that helps.
Good luck.
Good luck.
DVD Disc Error
Hi!
Thank you for the suggestions, so I'll look to see if I can find the disc in the trunk. Is there anything special that I am supposed to do to get the disc out? Thanks again, hopefully that does the trick, I don't have $4,500 to replace the darn thing

The DVD unit is on your right when you open the trunk. On the DVD drive for the Navi unit, flip the little door open, and there should be a little eject button. If you have your key in the ignition, make sure it's in the Accessories ON position. Pressing the button will eject the Navigation DVD, so you can inspect the condition of the disc.
i've recently had this problem as well...very frustrating. I have found that keeping the CD out of the DVD drive unless I'm driving has solved this problem. I purposely left it in the drive overnight just to see if it would work the next morning, I ended up getting the error again...So now i only keep it in when i'm driving.
I too am curious on exactly how you managed to clean your rom unit...i got the cd with brushes on it which requires you to cycle through tracks in order to make it work...did you simply remove and reinsert it a bunch or what?
OK, Getting the "DVD disc reading error, contact your dealer" page. I have tried disconnecting battery for one minute, 2 separate cleaning discs inserted each for 5 times each to total 10 times, went to the Diagnostics Page and all is green. When I press "Load Disc" in Version of Diagnostics Page, says "please check your disc" and screen is green. DVD is not scratched. Orange disc, appears to be in great condition.
Any ideas? I presume only options are:
1. try cleaning DVD ROM unit again with disc cleaner CDs
2. try another disc same version or upgraded
3. send to Alpine to recondition unit
4. go to dealer to get new unit
Any other thoughts would be great, am I missing something?
Thank you

Hey guys, I'm new to the site as well as being a new TL owner (06). Howerver this is not my first Honda/acura. The nav screen is reading the same disc error. what is the final problem and how do I fix it? This is driving me nutz while I drive down the road it tries to read the disc (acura screen pops up and then gives the disc error) what is the fix for this problem? how can I trouble shoot it? any help is good help! Thanks Maxwell (yakima, wa)
I got a few days after started using copied ver4.62 DVD. The error is intermittent and recently found that starting in a cold (in Grand Canyon in Dec) gives this error 100% of the time. The error goes away if I restart the car after 15-20 min.s.
I am not planning to do anything unless the error is frequent.

ah man this sucks i'm having the same problem with my navi. my car is an 04' so far i
1) Disconnected tha batt. (didn't work)
2) try the new updated disc (didn't work)
3) went to dealer and there still gonna make me pay for a certain amount cause i only have an extentded warranty
4) guess i'm gonna try the disc cleaner
If that doesnt work off to alpine it goes.

DVD disc reading error
I had the DVD disc reading error, intermittent at first. The $20 multi-brush DVD cleaning disc from Radio Shack had no impact after multiple cycles.
The dealer wanted $111 to evaluate the problem and $3450 for a replacement DVD unit.
It took about 30 minutes to pull the unit out from under the seat of the 2003 MDX, with unplugging the cables the biggest issue. There is little room for fingers under there and the cables are short.
Alpine did the repair and had it back to me in 3 days for $158. They replaced the laser and the DVD drive mechanism.
Reinstallation in the car took 10 minutes. The system needed a solid 10 minutes in one position to establish its position in the world before any of the menu options worked correctly.
Definitely better than the dealer option! Many thanks to the the forum for the help!

2006b Acura TL DVD nav issue
hi experts,
I am new to the board, so hi to all experts here! I got a 2006 acura tl a few months ago, and a few days ago I got the "DVD disc error". After noticing that the DVD nav disk (orange ver 3.5) was actually quite scratched, I assumed that this was a DVD issue; I spent many days trying different media and methods to create an image copy but didn't work.. Just when I was getting ready to buy the upgrade disk, I popped in the old nav disk yesterday, and it is just stuck. I mean, I press the button and it doesn't come out. I can't see the orange LED anymore either, and can't hear it whirring either. And I am not getting the error, it just stays at the initial warning screen and the OK button is not coming, and not getting the old disk read error either.
Not sure what's going on, any ideas? how do I get it out ..

Have an '07 TL that we bought last year and just started experiencing this error last week all of a sudden. Brought it in to the dealer today and they just ordered a new drive unit - glad it's still under warranty though otherwise I would have been sending it in to Alpine.
Hoping for some answers...my nav had gone down back in Dec 2008 (03 MDX) & I tried many "potential" solutions
-disconnect battery
-have disc cleaned, "de-scratched"
was told at dealer that getting new disc would solve, they did not have a disc to test with but told me that as long as I had disc they could fix...rec'd disc, -inserted, nothing...still "please check your disc".
Found this forum & read with great interest...one thing that I have that no one else seems to have had (and is stopping me from going back to the dealer) is that I cannot get to the diagnostics page, I have done the 3 button press simutaneously & one at a time & can never get in...anyone know how to get past this? Obviously, I don't ant to go to dealer & pay $100+ just for them to tell me my unit is fried...
Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated!

I got DVD read error 2 months ago when I first got my TL. I tested the DVD by copying the files onto my computer. There was no error so I knew the DVD was not the problem. Gator was kind to post Alpine address in Torrance, so I called them. They replaced some internal parts for $170. It is fine now
Here is compiled Navi DVD drive repair information
0. Try cleaning disc
Cost: $10 or less
1. Go to stealership and let them replace it with remanufactured unit
Cost: $895 + 1 hour labor = $1000 plus tax. It is easy to do and you can DIY. This is quickest way to get this fixed.
2. (Canada only) Send it to WC Enterprises
Cost: they quoted something like $695 + tax for this. 3-4 week turnaround time. Not a very good option considering I can just get a remanufactured unit in 2 days for couple hundreds more.
3. Send to Alpine Electronics in Torrance, CA
Mail your drive to:
Alpine Electronics
2012 Abalone Ave., Unit D
Torrance, CA 90501
Cost: $158 + tax as of October 2008. You can pay by cheque, money order or credit card. My shipping weight was 5lbs. It may cost more for Canadian customers (I will post this information once I find out).

I thought this thread had the solution in sending the Navi back to Alpine which I did on my 2001 MDX along with the $158 flat rate repair check. Got it back today. Service order says it was returned unrepaired!! Call Alpine, they told me that parts are no longer made for this Navi unit so I'm out of luck, sorry. They are returning my $158 check too.
So now what can one do??? Buy one from a wrecking yard and cross your fingers?? I have heard about remanufactured units. Called Alpine again who said they don't have any, must call dealers to see if they have any. This really sucks!

Never had an issue with mine in the past but today (when I actually needed it) I plugged in an address and I thought maybe it froze on me at the screen where you select your routing prefreence. After about 45 seconds I got the dreaded "read disc error". I pulled my disc out and saw this:

It doesn't look that bad in the picture but it's pretty scratched up, in a circular pattern, just in one spot...probably the part of the disc it reads every time it boots up. I've already bought two different lens cleaners, cleaned and polished the navi disc, and have since ordered another (updated) disc. I'm pretty sure this will fix the issue but I'm still concerned that it will do this to my new disc.
Comments?

That's my conern. I don't know how they got there. I assume it's just from countless cycylings. I did not buy the car new, was 4 years old and had 65,000 miles on it. I'm now at 80,000.
$h*T. You were right. Wish I read that post sooner. Did they say what was wrong with the drive? Glad I bought a used navi disc. Looks like I'll be pulling the unit out and sending it to Alpine.
