Dvd Audio Suggestions

Any recommendations on DVD-A that really enhance the 5:1 surround ? I bought Fleetwood Mac's Rumors and think it's just ok. I also bought Queen's "The Game" and think it's very good. I hear a great deal of surround wioth this one.

Linkin Park has a good DVD-A, nice mix. I also like swing and bought Big Phat Band or something like that - Some dvd-a sites have ratings and comments. Check those out. I heard that the 3 doors down dvd-a is supposed to be good also, just havent bought it yet

The Flaming Lips DVD is really good, the Beck DVD is good as well. I also have bought the Everclear, Missy E and Foo Fighter DVDs but they are OK with Everclear's being a little better. I was at Best Buy today (buying something else) and decided to get the Linkin Park DVDA but they did not have it.

This gentleman has made some choice recommendations:

Do get the Flaming Lips "Yoshimi battles the Pink robots" on DVD-A as well as Beck's "Seachange" (watch out because the are both DVD-A and SACD versions!!-I have the SACD version).
Another good DVD-A is Bjork's "Vespertine" DVD-A.

Kraftwerk on DVD-A or SACD would be bloody amazing!

This is of course that you have great taste in music and enjoy the work of the above three artists!

Now go off to drive your TL and listen to some brill musik!

Tommy - The Who - sounds very nice with unbelievable imaging. The only draw back is that it reveals recording deficiencies of a 1969 product.

Nightfly -Donald Fagen - GREAT!

I second the SEAL recommendation!!!

WAAAAAAY over the top in comparision to most 5.1 mixes i have heard. i usually think over the top "extream" use of surround and such ruins the musicality (word?) of a song... but it just works sooo well for the SEAL album. A++

I worked for Creative Labs the sound card people and we needed content to showcase the Audigy 5:1 Sound Card. We chose The Silverline label because of Phat Band and older jazz titles that were well authored.

Crowded House - debut album - most discreet 5.1 mix award
Sting - Brand New Day - excellentee!
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road -wowser! - Funeral for a Friend is out of this world!
Diana Krall - buy any of them if you like her stuff - 1st class

Second the motion on this one. Also, the track "Gray Seal" really opens up the surround.

Queen's "A Night at the Opera" is fun - especially "Bohemian Rhapsody." There are all sorts of extra voices and instruments that appear out of nowhere!

Eagles' Hotel California

I think a great DVD-A is the Eagles' Hotel California. It was mixed by ELS himself and I think he makes great use of all of the channels.

Eagles' "Hotel California" really is great, just listened to it tonight on the way home. "Fragile" by Yes is simply amazing for those who may recall hearing the original in mere stereo in the '70s. Guess I should buy some Moody Blues too, huh? Hoping for Steely Dan's "Can't Buy a Thrill" to come out in DVD-A; "Gaucho" is not a fave of mine.

Couldn't find Foo Fighters at Towerrecords.com. Where did you buy that one? Love their sound.

The best place I have been able to find for DVD-A's is Acoustic Sounds. Here is the link.

At the local Tower Records. Not sure if I saw it on the website or not but it was in the store.

I'll have to check out the Seal, Queen and Eagles DVD. Thanks for everyone's input!

I also have Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells -- sounds great (though Elton's GYBR is still my fav).

Does anyone have any sense of if DVD-A is catching on? Eve on the websites that appear to offer "all" available DVD-A's, there really arent that many and it doesn't appear new releases are being routinely (or sporadically, for that matter) offered on this new format.

Fortunately, as I am finding, the stereo in the TL is so great, even "primitive" CDs sound better than any car stereo I've ever had...

I recently bought "Riding with the King" by Eric Clapton & BBKing, it is astounding, especially the title track.

Sammy Hagar's "Hallelujah" is pretty good as well if you are a Sammy/Van Hagar fan.

I currently have the following:

Linkin Park - Reanimation
3 Doors Down

I also just bought Outkast and Blue Man Group. Just waiting for these to arrive. I hope more artists start to come out with their newest albums in DVD-A.

Sting's Brand New Day is incredible. Also if you're into some funky jazz, try Medeski, Martin & Wood's DVD-A.

Check out Best of REM 1998-2003. Track 11 "Animal" is a great showcase for the quality and surround-sound capability of DVD-A recordings.

The Frank Sinatra disc with Count Basie Orch (arranged by Quincy Jones) is pretty decent for those of you over 25. A lot of subtle nuances floating around the channels.

Just got back from my local Best Buy (Freehold, NJ). They had an awsome selection of DVD-A. I just picked up the Eagles ($22.95) and Sammy Haggar ($13.95) (drove to see Van Halen Concert last nite). Will be heading back for a bunch more. Fairly reasonable prices I thought.

I'm over 25 and think that the selection on dvd-a's (in a word) sucks. My TL should be in my garage before the 15th of July, but I'm one of those people who likes to "hit the ground runnig". To that end, I have been looking in my local (New Jersey) stores for music that I can relate to. I found one album by George Strait (spelt right?), and that was the that. I didn't buy it.

I will keep looking for new releases in 5.1 to surface/produced. However in the meantime (from this fourm) I know that the music I already own will sould better than fine.

I just got these three DVD-A dics today:

Metallica: Metallica
Elvis: 30 Greatest Hits
REM: Best Of

All three sound great. I think Metallica got so-so reviews, but it sounded great to me. Next on my list is Linkin Parks' DVD-A.

I got mine from cduniverse.com and circuitcity.com, but dvduniverse.com and you should go here for a good comprehensive list of current and upcoming titles:

Can we play Super Audio CD (SACD) in our car in surround sound format?

Are SACDs compatable with DVD Audio players?

Hey, I'm over 60 so you can imagine my choice of music. I did like the Dianna Krall DVD-A, and Brian Wilson - Live at the Roxie is really good if you're a Beach Boy fan. I find the XM radio to be a better choice for music although the sound is pretty basic.

SACD's will not play in surround in the TL. Hybrids should play in stereo. SACD's require an SACD player. I beleive Sony developed the format therefor most of their DVD players play SACD's, mine does.
