DVD-A.... Amazing...

So how many of us have actually bought and played a DVD-Audio disc in their TL's?? I read one review online about it, and decided to give it a try. Man, now I know what I was missing. All I can say about the sound systems in our cars with a DVD-A is... jaw dropping. If you haven't experienced it yet, I suggest you do. I got the Crystal Method - Legion of Boom DVD-A to give it a try... (that was supposed to be one of the better discs for our systems).

Try it.

I absolutely agree. It's really a shame that DVD-A has not become more popular with the mainstream population. I wish there was more popular music available in this format.

You shoudl check out the Adobeman Threads - make your own 5.1 DVD-A. NOT as good as commercial DVD-A, but some stuff sounds pretty damn good; better than *just* Stereo.

Internet for the most part -ebay, amazon, etc. There is one particular internet music store site that has quite a few, but I can't remember the name - www.cduniverse.com I *think*.

It has to be marked as "DVD-A" or "DVD-Audio".

Guys, if you want DVD Audio discs, there ARE many sites available to order.

--www.amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_gnr_a...ds=dvd%20audio
---www.buy.com (http://www.buy.com/retail/videos/sea...d=&dcaid=16009)
--www.cduniverse.com (http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/.../DVD+Audio.htm)

Recommendations:
-Toy Matinee (unbelievable separation in audio-especially vocals)
-Dave Koz-The Dance (if you like Smooth Jazz)
-Steely Dan (any album available)
-Eagles-Hell Freezes Over
-Fleetwood Mac (any of the albums available)
-The Beatles-LOVE
-REM-Greatest Hits
-Yes-Fragile
-Santana (any album available)

Alex-to answer your questions...you cannot buy them in stores anymore-just order them off the internet. By the way, I got the Doors boxed set for Christmas and it's awesome too. Listen to the demo disc with "Touch Me" on it-you'll understand about separation! Plus, "Winelight" by Grover Washington Jr. is what Eliot Scheiner uses to demonstrate how a 5.1 surround sound song is put together. That album is excellent too, but if you don't like Smooth Jazz, don't bother with it.

if only more devices supported DVD-A... So far only my TL supports it, so buying such a "specialized" disk would be a waste of my cash

No. Super Audio CD's are a different format (Sony proprietary) and are a competing item to DVD-A. Both carry 5.1 channel sound, however. Many SACD's have a "regular" CD (2-channel) version of the tracks which can be played in any CD player (including ours), but you won't get the surround sound out of it.

You can also look for DTS Discs...our stereo will play those in multi-channel as well; here's one that I have and would recommend: http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/...ke+The+Sun.htm

These DVD-A disc can be used with ANY 5.1 surround system. So you can play them on your PC or home audio system as well. If you have the 5.1 surround you'll hear the difference.

I agree its one of the hidden features of the TL. I just make a new cd on a dvd-a. It is amazing, I fit 99 songs on just 1 dvd-a! So Eventually in a few days I will have almost 600 songs on 6 dvd's, sweeeetttt!!!!

IIRC, you can fit upto 99 songs per group. And you have upto 9 groups. Not sure how many songs total before you have a space/size issue.

Now doing that, I assume (pretty sure), is just 2-channel, mp3 quality, so you're only getting a storage space advantange, not a sound quality advantage.

IMHO, the biggest disadvantage of DVD-A in the TL is that there is no track/album/artist info, and no folders, so navigating a lot of songs can be a PITA.

yea I agree with that. You don't know what song is playing. So are you saying I can put more than 99 songs on each DVD?

How are you burning your music onto DVD. Are you using Itunes by chance or just dragging random music from Windows Explorer?? I'm trying to figure out how to burn a Itunes playlist onto a DVD to use in the TL.

Thanks!!

I used to have a link on the DTS Store for their own discs that they sell, but it's taken down....damn, they are GREAT discs.

If you can watch some of the discs at home, you'll also see some "Extras" that you can't see on your car. Whether it's a discography, a photo book or videos, they're fun to watch. That's why DVD Audio discs were so much better than SACD's. With SACD's, you just get a remastered album. But with DVD Audio discs, you get video AND great audio.

Ryder, I've got the Miles Davis "Tutu" disc. Grab it if you can still find it.

Download the demo for Cirlinca DVD audio solo and it lets you burn music on dvd-a's. They give you a trial period of either 30 days or 5 dvd's, which ever comes first.

Yes, more than 99 per disc. Limited by disc size, nothing else, as far as I know. DVD-A format allows for "groups". On a commercial DVD-A you'll often have 2 or 3 groups. Group 1 will be the 5.1 Channel DVD-A, Group 2 might be DTS, Group 3 regular 2-channel stereo.

When you author a DVD-A you can put multiple groups (up to 9, iirc). Each group can contain 99 songs.

On the TL you change groups (Group 1 --> Group 2 --> etc) by pressing the SCAN and RPT buttons at the same time.

Downside: The TL does not change groups automatically. When it reaches the last song in the group you are in it will go to the next disc, NOT the next group.

Thanks!!

You cannot do any kind of "drag and drop" in the 3G - 4G, yes; 3G, no. You have to use a DVD-A Authoring program of some sort. Hard to find and no freeeware. Cirlinca Solo is available and pretty easy to use - cost ~$40 - $45. I am using Wave Lab. Disc Welder is another. The authoring program converts files to the DVD-A format.

Also MP3 converted/authored to DVD-A is *still* MP3 quality - once it's compressed, you can't go back. Best results, sound-wise is from the original source material (commerical CD, etc).

Finally, just because you put music in DVD-A format does NOT mean you get any 5.1 effects. 2-channel files authored to DVD-A are still just 2 channel Stereo.

You really need to read the Adobeman Threads on making DVD-A to get the whole picture.

I recently bought Seal-Best:1991-2004. I wasn't much of a Seal fan before, but this sounds great in the TL. It costs $26 at Amazon. What's neat is that you get two albums of regular CDs and 1 DVD which has the same material that the CDs have plus some videos. On the DVD you need to use the SCAN+RPT trick to get to the acoustic album.

A few years back I bought a DVD changer that played DVD-Audio, so I purchased three titles in the format just to see what it was like. To be honest, I didn't listen to music much in that room, so I stopped buying more titles. Thankfully, I did buy: ELP-Brain Salad Surgery, Fleetwood Mac-Rumors and Yes-Fragile. These titles are almost impossible to find, or they're expensive.

So after years gathering dust, I am enjoying them in the TL. Only wish I had a few more, like Eagles-Hotel California which is out of print too.

DVDA [if you've seen orgazmo that's funny], is awesome. I have a few of discs, Eagles Hotel California, Yellow Brick Road [the opening song on that sounds f____ng awesome], Seal [my first DVDA.. Fry's doesn't have much], and some good old Fleetwood Mac

But.. yes.. it rocks. You hear so much more of the music, things you don't hear on a regular CD or iPod..!!

I can't find this in our format. All they offered was SACD (I have a copy but mine doesn't play in the TL). Can you verify this was released in DVD-A so I can continue my search?

That was the 30th anniversary remastered and then offered on SACD (never offered on DVD-A), I have this disc for my home theater and while I am not a big fan of 5.1 music (they like to move the soudn stage too much) the Pink Floyd SACD 5.1 is truly what Pink Floyd is all about! If they only would have had 5.1 back then I can only imagine the stuff PF would have released!

+1 on Dark Side of the Moon. It's a real shame they didn't release this in DVD Audio. I've heard it DOES sound fantastic in SACD. Keith, I'm so surprised you're not a 5.1 fan!

Guys, if you're looking for great separation and surround sound the disc from Toy Matinee. It will blow you away. The separation of vocals is amazing.
http://store.acousticsounds.com/brow...Title_ID=14201

Plus, any of the Doors albums are great (I couldn't find them separately, so I got the boxed set-you can't go wrong).
http://store.acousticsounds.com/brow...Title_ID=39255

Plus, if you're a Smooth Jazz fan, "The Dance" by Dave Koz is outstanding.
http://store.acousticsounds.com/brow...?Title_ID=9619

If you like the Beatles, the "LOVE" disc is terrific too. If you're a Beatles purist like me, you'll be amazed with what they've done with this music.

Hi,
Is this the correct place to find out if anyone is selling some Michelin tires for a TL. I am looking for some used tires for my 06'TL. I got the 235-45-17R 93W speed rating Michelins and would like to replace them only by the same one's. Can anyone plz ping me if you are in Orlando or anywhere sorrounding Orlando,FL.

Thanks

Dudd,

This is the Audio Section of the site. There is a Tires and Wheels section too. Go to that section and repost your question there. You'll get great, quick answers there. Here's the link:

I just downloaded the DVD Autdio Solo 2.0 , burned a copy of a DVD-A, and played it this morning in the car, but it didn't recognize it. It said "Dvd-A" tried to read it for a couple seconds, then it spit it back out. Did this about 4 times, no dice. Also, I'm only able to get it to burn with the first group loaded up. When I try to put songs on to Group 2 or 3, it says there's too much data. Don't know what's goin on here, but now I can only burn 4 more dvd's and I'm not impressed with the software so far.
