Drop in replacement sub!

Hey guys, I'm kinda a newbie to the whole audio upgrading for our cars, so I was browsing on Ebay for a drop in replacement for our factory sub. I know our sub is pretty shallow, and I've read somewhere that anything deeper than the factory sub will require custom cutting work into the back panel.
I came across these 8' subs on Ebay and was wondering if any thinks this might work either as a direct drop in or something that requires MINIMAL custom work.

Rockford Fosgate

Some cheap brand

JL

Cerwin Vega

and some others one for 19.99.. a little bit too cheap I think.

Thanks for help!

i didn't check the links, but are they free-air subs?

They'd almost have to be...and no one really makes any decent free-air subs...

Check out Crutchfield.com Find the 800 number and call them. They will be able to tell you exactly what speakers will fit and what will work the best in the TL...

I remember reading here that a few people have used an ED free air sub. I did a search but couldn’t find the threads.... Check out www.edesignaudio.com they make very good products. Your best option by far would be to put a sub in an enclosure in your trunk. Because of the mechanics of a free air sub even the best free air subs will only sound alright compared to a sub in a properly designed enclosure.

An 8' sub?! That's a huge sub! I don't even think the car is 8' wide!

Of couse that will require so much juice you'd probably need a dedicated generator, too.

I agree that if you're going to go through the trouble of dropping in a replacement sub, you'd have more "bang for the buck" by building a properly-designed enclosure instead. I suspect the factory sub is better-tuned to its mounting than any aftermarket sub trying to directly replace it. It was designed to work together. But, if you buy a decent aftermarket sub and install it in a matched enclosure, you'll be very happy.

The only people who can tell you what speakers fit perfectly are the people here who have done it!

I don't trust a single retailer to give me sound advice.....my own experience.

False, infinite baffle subs can be some of the cleanest you will ever hear. Image Dynamics makes a good one but I don't know if they make em in an 8.
