Driver's door locks/unlocks only with key in door

Driver's door locks/unlocks only with key in door
Gradually over the past couple of months, the driver's door won't lock/unlock with either the remote or the lock/unlock switch on the door. Could it be that the lock/unlock actuator inside the door is broken or worn out? What was bad, is that I would push the remote to lock my car on my way into a store, and come back and find the driver's door unlocked. Now I have to always lock/unlock with the key in the door. What a pain!
